Yale's BHSAT XXIII Available for Spring 2014 Hosts

Post by Grace »

Hi everyone! The Yale University quizbowl team is pleased to announce that this year's Bulldog High School Academic Tournament (BHSAT XXIII) will be available for tournament mirrors in the spring of 2014. As is traditional, BHSAT 2014 will be written and edited by members of the Yale quizbowl team. The last three iterations of this tournament have consistently garnered praise, and we hope to maintain our high standard of creativity and quality while paying closer attention to copy-editing and difficulty evenness across categories.

The main site of the tournament will [tentatively] be hosted on Saturday, February 1 at Yale University in New Haven, CT. We are currently seeking mirror sites at other locations across the country, and that's where you come in, gentle reader! The set will be available for use from the weekend of February 1st to the weekend of May 17th (i.e. the weekend immediately before the 2014 PACE National Scholastic Championship in Reston, VA). After that, the set will be uploaded to the archive for public reference. If you are interested in mirroring BHSAT 2014, please email me at [email protected] and wait for confirmation. We'd also be happy to see BHSAT used at singles tournaments, state All-Star Team tryouts, etc. - just email me at the above address and we'll work out a suitable arrangement.

The mirror fee, payable to "Y. Student Academic Competitions," is 10 dollars per non-house team in attendance. We will, as in previous years, show a preference for hosts who demonstrate their capacity for outreach to a wide range of teams in their area.

Set details:

The set will consist of fourteen (14) packets of equal difficulty. Tossups will be five to six lines long in 10 point Times New Roman. No tossup will exceed the sixth line of text and no bonus part will exceed two full lines of text. All tossups will be worth 10 points all the way through (there will not be power marks). Host sites must agree not to modify, subtract from, add to, or edit the set.

The difficulty of this year's BHSAT will be in the same range as the BHSAT sets from the past three years (2011-2013). You can peruse those to your heart's content on quizbowlpackets.com. Taking into account the feedback we received last year, we intend to pay special attention to accessibility in middle and easy clues.

Packets will be distributed as follows:
4/4 Literature (at least 1/1 each American, British, European, .5/.5 one more of the above, .5/.5 World)
4/4 Science (1/1 biology, 1/1 chemistry, 1/1 physics, 1/1 other science, with a heavy focus on math)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 2/2 European/British/Ancient, 1/1 World, Canadian/Australian where appropriate in context)
2.5/2.5 Religion, Myth, Philosophy (1/1 each Religion and Myth, .5/.5 Philosophy)
2.5/2.5 Fine Arts (1/1 Visual and 1/1 Auditory guaranteed per packet, .5/.5 one more of the above)
.5/.5 Social Science
.5/.5 Miscellaneous and Mixed*
1/1 Geography/Current Events (approx. .66/.66 Geo, .33/.33 CE)
1/1 Trash/Pop Culture

*These questions will be "some combination of miscellaneous content of importance to intellectually curious high schoolers on one hand, and purely academic questions whose clues come from multiple academic categories (in the vein of NAQT's Mixed_Pure_Academic questions) on the other.

Each packet will feature a tiebreaker tossup and an extra bonus, which could come from any academic category.

We hope you'll help us make BHSAT a nationwide success again in Spring 2014. Please contact me at [email protected] to secure a mirror in your region. Thanks!

We're glad to announce that BHSAT will be used at UNC Chapel Hill on February 15. Please contact Ryan Rosenberg ([email protected]) for more information.

Though it's early yet, we'd also like to note that we're still looking for mirrors in any region without an existing BHSAT site. If you'd like to use BHSAT for your tournament, please contact me at [email protected].

Unfortunately, the mirror of BHSAT at CAST (at UNC) has been cancelled due to date and set conflicts.

However, we are pleased to announce that BHSAT will be used at ATROPHY at Northern Illinois University on April 26. Please contact Kristin Strey ([email protected]) for more information.

We're still hoping to run BHSAT in any active circuit without an existing mirror. If you'd be interested in hosting a tournament running BHSAT (or if you know anyone who might be interested), please send me an email or PM.

Just a heads-up for potential BHSAT hosts: I will be away with limited internet access from 3/9 to 3/20, so any inquiries about BHSAT should be directed to [email protected] in the interim. Thanks!
