IFT Mirror at Maryland (10/14/12)

Post by DumbJaques »

The University of Maryland - College Park will be hosting a mirror of the Illinois Fall Tournament, an inaugural house-written event unsurprisingly written by Illinois. This event is designed as an easier tournament in the vein of ACF Fall or MUT, so we hope to see both new and established circuit teams come out.

Eligibility
Per the original announcement:
You can play this tournament as long as you are affiliated with a school in the ACF sense of the term. If you are unsure of your eligibility status, you should contact us or your TD. Also, there will be no open teams allowed at this tournament, no matter what the reason. Chimera or scab teams are only allowed for the purposes of filling out a field. People who need to play “unaffiliated” for whatever reason should contact us to resolve any issues. Exceptions might be made if there is some scenario I haven't envisioned here, but that's not likely. Play with your own schools people!
Essentially, eligibility at this event works like ACF Fall or EFT would, but just let me know if you have any questions.

Entry Fees
Base fee: $120
Buzzer discount: -$5 per functional buzzer system
Staffer discount: -$10 per functional moderator
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles one-way (as determined by Google Maps)

Registration
I will be serving as TD for this event. To register, email me at [email protected]. Feel free to post in this thread to express interest, but you won't actually be registered until you email me.

Hmm. . . thanks for the heads up. 10/6 and 10/20 are both home football games for Maryland, which adds a number of parking/logistics hassles. I'm amenable to moving the date based on what people are able to make. Hosting on a Sunday is also a possibility, so I'd invite interested teams to contact me with their preferences/availability.

RM is tentatively interested, and would probably prefer either September 29 (if it's not too early), October 27 (if it's not too late), or a Sunday.

Delaware is interested and would like the 6th, 13th, 27th or a Sunday (which looks like it could be best)

10/20 is Penn-ance, so that's unlikely to work, and it's surrounded by a VCU & UVa HS tournament, respectively. Obviously, we'd prefer 10/6, but if that's not doable, we'd attend on 10/14.

10/14 is probably the best option for us as well. We're pretty limited in what we have the chance to play this semester, so 10/27 (Cav Classic) would suck, and 10/6 is our fall break, which may make marshaling teams difficult (though I imagine at least some of our members from NoVA would attend).

Liberty can most likely bring 2-3 teams, as long as the tournament is not scheduled on our fall break, Oct. 13.

GMU is likely to come regardless of whatever date is chosen. Obviously with the high school tournaments scheduled at VCU and UVA the main concern should obviously be working around those and choosing an amicable date. Again, whatever date is chosen, we will likely attend with 1-2 teams.

I feel like the boy who cried "TOURNAMENT!" seeing as I have, at least once, posted Penn State's interest in a tournament and then failed to follow up. I'm a terrible person.

That said! Penn State requires 30 academic days (!) in order to get funding for a tournament (this is increasing to 40 academic days this semester, but Penn State is cutting us a little slack), so October 27th would be absolutely killer. I'm gonna see if the Treasurer and I can't talk to UPAC about getting money if the 20th is, in fact, when this is going down. Unfortunately, if it ends up being earlier I doubt we can attend.

Pew pew pew.

Oh, wait, I think we're going to Pennance. Lemme talk to the officers who actually do administrative work. LOOK AWAY.

Princeton will probably send at least one team as long as it's not October 6th or 20th. The 27th is the beginning of our fall break, but we can probably make it work.

Based on the responses I've received so far, it sounds like the best date is Sunday, 10/14, but I'll keep it open for another couple of days to see if I'm overlooking anything.

UNC is interested with 1-2 teams. Our attendance would be unlikely on 10/27 (the NC State football game), but the other dates all work I believe.

This tournament is filling up very quickly, with around 16 teams signed up so far. There's still space, but not a lot of it, so if you're interested in attending you should let me know ASAP.

Field bump - we're around 22-24 right now, so registration is going to close imminently; email me ASAP if you want to register, but no guarantees after Saturday.

Also, please note that the field list has additionally been updated with moderator/buzzer figures; if any number listed next to your team is not correct, please let me know right away.

Pertinent Info:

This tournament will run in Jimenez Hall, Room 0220. Note that this is the larger auditorium in the basement (for those of you more acquainted with the bowels of the JMZ), rather than our usual meeting room of 0105. I've made this choice because we've got 24 teams signed up right now, and 0220 will be eminently more comfortable.

NOTE: 0220 is occasionally occupied on weekends by the local Korean Gospel Choir; if you arrive and discover a non-quizbowl group there, check 0105. Or engage in the Seikanron.

Registration will run from 8:00 to 8:45, and rounds will start as close to 9:00 AM as possible. If you're running late, call, but understand that the tournament may very well start without you. If you have not already supplied me with a cell phone contact, please send me an email with the necessary information.

PARKING:
Parking Sunday mornings on Maryland's campus is quite easy. The best bet for easy, plentiful parking is Lot 1/Lot Z, which is prominently labelled and rendered in green/yellow on this map: http://www.transportation.umd.edu/parki ... _color.pdf.
If you're approaching from Route 1, simply take Campus Drive past the circle with the big "M" and continue until you pass Stamp/Cole Field House/some tennis courts in sequence on your right. The large parking lot that will appear before you is Lot 1/Z.

If you need a GPS location, I recommend the intersection of Campus Drive and Union Drive, College Park, MD; this location is roughly equidistant from Jimenez and Lot 1/Z.

Please shoot me an email/PM with any questions. Looking forward to seeing everyone this Sunday.

EDIT: The Redskins and hopefully Robert Griffin III (PBUH) have a 4:25 kickoff at home this Sunday. I don't anticipate the game traffic having much of an impact for any of us; however, in the event that this tournament finishes way ahead of schedule, you are strenuously discouraged from leaving College Park by taking 495 E (the Inner Loop of the Beltway), lest you get caught in the pilgrimage.

Sadly, due to Maryland's pervasive architectural theme of "Neo-Classical Penal System Revival," there are like 20 buildings that look exactly like that. Jimenez does have a somewhat unique balcony, however (that may or may not have been used for the occasional warm-weather quizbowl practice).

Congratulations to UVA A, who won the 2012 IFT mirror at Maryland. After 11 rounds of prelims and playoffs, UVA A held a 9-2 record, with a three-way tie for second between Princeton A, UNC, and Delaware, who were all 8-3. Those three teams were seeded by ppg and played two elimination games, with Princeton surviving both to advance to an advantage final. UVA then won the first game, 490-155. Full stats are available in the post above.

Thanks to all teams for coming out. Extra thanks to Matt Weiner, Dave Madden, Jon Davis, and John Gilbert for helping us staff a very large tournament, and to all the Maryland moderators as well. In particular, thanks to Isaac Hirsch, who recognized the need for a long finals series and got it started right away as other moderators were still wrapping up.

Hope to see everyone back again for ACF Regionals/Terrapin in 2013.
