Summer tournament(s) at Ridgewood HS, Ridgewood, NJ

Post by Great Bustard »

Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, NJ (about 25 minutes west of NYC) will host a summer tournament this year for high school and middle school teams. Maybe more than one. If you're interested in coming, email me with dates that work for you. This could be over several days; we can almost certainly host people interested coming in for this at team members' houses. This tournament(s) will not conflict with ACE camp. Also, Jersey Shore Open is open to graduating seniors. Expect an announcement on that in May or so. So much for the off season. Ha!

What sets did you think you're doing to use? A college set? Something else just not heard in this region?

We'll see what's available; who would want to play, etc. Or we could potentially do packet submission, a la Jersey Shore Open (which actually, if this were limited to high schoolers wouldn't be a bad set to mirror, both the 2011 and 2012 versions). The JSO would probably need some editing though; I'd be happy to do that. Anyway, I'm just throwing this out here, that we have a very cooperative administration that would let us use the building whenever we want in the summer. I'll look into this further, but with NHBB Nationals (both middle and high school) around the corner, this will probably only become a priority after May 15.

Any Ideas for dates yet? Also, I have an all hard history packet that I wrote for a never-happened thing at DCC that I could give to you for this.

I would be happy to read for these. Also, my team(s) may be interested in playing. Let me know what happens with this.

you are interested, that is 1/4 of a team already. And complaining here does not help make our non-forum using team interested.

Many high schools host tournaments throughout the year that have their own teams play, so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to, especially if this gets attention from many people in the Tri-State area who would be happy to read if they are looking for something to do.

Unless this happens while I'm at summer camp, I'd definitely like to come and play/moderate.

July when ACE Camp isn't going on is when this will happen. And it will happen, but don't expect details until around NASAT, since I'm barely getting a chance to breathe until then.

Great. Just as an update, I hope to finalize the dates for this with the school this week. July 9-10 are looking like the most likely dates for now. Ridgewood's team members can provide accommodations to those looking to come in from farther afield. As for a set, Ridgewood is writing one that I will edit. Since we're earmarking two days for this, though, are there other sets out there that haven't been mirrored in the NYC area and that haven't been posted publicly yet? It would be great if Ridgewood could play as well. Or, failing that, we may do packet submission where I edit as well. Also, if we get sufficient interest, I would consider opening this up to college undergraduates for a second division.
Don't email me or post indicating you're coming yet, as I need to nail down the dates first. But July 9-10 would give me time to coordinate this, and it doesn't conflict with ACE, so that looks like the best possible time.

Presumably just what it says which is that people from Ridgewood can supply housing to people who have to stay the night in order to play this tournament.

I guess I was just trying to clarify wether or not that means we'll be staying at people's houses.

The weekend of July 7-8 is a possibility, but the issue there is building access, since no one is in the school on a Sunday. I suppose July 6-7 might work, but would the weekend really matter for students looking to come to this? I can pursue that course if so - let me know. Also, on one of the days, we will likely be using Adam Silverman's set, which hasn't been posted and hasn't been mirrored in the NYC area yet.

A weekend certainly could help attract some students. I'm not working as a camp counselor this summer, but last summer I wouldn't have been able to take time off of work to go to a quiz bowl tournament.

Not sure if July 7-8 is considered the July 4th weekend or not. Since July 4 lands right in the middle of the week, I'm not sure what the "official" weekend is. But if it's July 7-8, you probably won't be able to get the school. They will have everything shut down so they don't have to pay the holiday overtime.

July 21 & 22?

Is out of the question since I'm going to be at Chicago Open. But, the school will almost be certainly open on July 5 and 6 for summer school, so I don't think that's a concern.
