Individual Writers Seeking Projects to Join, Post Here
Re: Want to write/edit for a larger project? Post here!
This applies to me. I would be willing and able to write something on the order of 20/20 college questions in non-history, non-myth categories over the course of this summer (for me, late June to early September) for any interested parties.
Disclaimer: I have a (mostly-deserved) reputation for fucking out on the high school sets I have been asked to edit or write for. These have occurred because I oversubscribe for things and/or have work and school commitments which interfere. I do not foresee such issues occurring during the summer. To assure any sets that would be willing to take me of this, I would be happy to set up strict and specific deadlines for submissions to ensure they are done in an efficient and timely manner.

Matt Jackson, as will no doubt shock you, I am on board for this. I will take on as much Lit as you need me to, as well as whatever I can help out with on history, religion, and CE, depending on distribution.

I do believe I fit into this category. I can write most of the Humanities (except Music and Classical Myth) but would prefer to mostly write History and Literature, especially the former.

To clarify, I'm not saying "I'm starting a tournament; join in." At this point in time, I don't intend to organize a college tournament for the 2012-13 season. I'm saying "If you would be on board for a tournament sometime this year, and want to join something larger rather than start one, post here so the people who are doing tournaments can find you."JamesIV wrote:Matt Jackson, as will no doubt shock you, I am on board for this. I'm up for writing some science. I doubt I have the depth of knowledge to write MO level physics, however.

I would potentially be interested in doing some writing. My areas of interest are American history, and European history past 1453. As well, if your tournament includes trash, but your team thinks "gee whiz, I hate that trash stuff", then I'm a person you could talk to about writing a trash distribution.

Re: Individual Writers Seeking Projects to Join, Post Here
Allow me to gently discourage this type of thinking. "MO-level" physics does not have to be on some sort of super-complicated topic; it just has to be competently written and correct. I'm not saying "edit MO physics" but I do want to encourage science folks with a solid grasp of the material and an understanding of question construction to give it a shot and not be daunted too much by the MO label.fett0001 wrote:I'm up for writing some science. For me, the problem will be the relative ordering of clues that I've never heard of, which should be about half of the question, considering how I did on last year's MO at practice.grapesmoker wrote:Allow me to gently discourage this type of thinking. You won't improve at writing high-level questions by avoiding the writing of high-level questions.
Don't be afraid of writing bad tossups - be afraid of not listening to feedback after you write bad tossups.

Yeah, if there's anything high-level science writing needs more of, it's the fresh perspective of a scientist using clues that they have encountered from their everyday experience (particularly the classroom), rewarding knowledge of more basic things than the stuff hard science is often preoccupied with. That also counters the still-present influence of science writers stringing along hard clues from set to set, making them slightly easier as they go.

I will note that I went from not being able to answer ANYTHING at MO in 2008 to editing it two years later. What I noticed in my writing (and that I guess I still do) is when you write from an outside the circuit approach (as I was doing my first few years of writing things), if you understand material and how clues work, you can generally put together solid questions--the trick is sometimes your answers don't jive with the knowledge base of the field or that you drop some quizbowl-famous thing pretty early. In each of these cases, a simple consultation with an experienced editor or player should fix it.

I can probably help with some writing, editing, proofreading, randomizing, etc. for some tournaments during summer break, and the 2012-2013 school year.

I'll reiterate my open call for new writers to latch onto Collegiate Novice. I will assign you answers and pay you for them, give you my feedback to help you improve. And if you do quality work, I'll recommend your name to other editors when they're looking for up-and-comers in your categories of choice. One of the problems with breaking into the quizbowl writing world is that editors don't always know the quality of your work or how much you can handle. Working on Collegiate Novice is a great way to prove yourself and move on to bigger projects.

Re: Individual Writers Seeking Projects to Join, Post Here
I would like to write for tournaments during the 2012-13 school year.
Subjects I feel very comfortable writing questions for: biology, literature, mythology, religion, painting, sculpture, architecture, anthropology, linguistics, psychology, history, geography, paleontological earth science
Subjects I will likely feel very comfortable writing questions for next year because I'm taking three related classes: chemistry
Subjects I feel pretty good about writing questions for: film, photography, physics, economics, political science, current events, other earth science
Subjects I can write questions for but they will probably not be ideal: philosophy, sociology, opera, dance, astronomy
Subjects I really should not write questions for: music, jazz, math, CS
I'm not a big trash fan but I can write questions on bands I like and videogames I've played.

I'm probably not going to play much anymore, but I still would like to write.
I can write Bio/chem, trash/CE/other, and history at any level. I definitely want to write other (non-lit) subjects, especially if it's college regular or below levels. Please contact me using the address from that email button on the right.

I'd like to write, for the following subjects at the following difficulties:
Any difficulty - physics, astronomy
Regular difficulty and below - math, mythology, earth science, trash (not sports, not music), Euro history, books originally written in Latin, dinosaurs
Easy, Easy-ish, and HS: basically everything else but chem and lit
Contact me by PM or email. I'd also be interested in getting some editing experience.

Re: Individual Writers Seeking Projects to Join, Post Here
I am usually up for any classical music and chemistry questions, however I try to stay away from biochem. I'm writing most to all of the music for EACN, but I could potentially pick up a tournament for during the school year. I also wrote the base of most music questions for Peaceful Resolution, but some of the harder ones were written by Ike.
To summarize:
Any Diff: Chemistry and Music
Normal to Easy: Opera, Jazz, Myth (particularly non-classical)
You really don't want to let me near history or most lit questions.

Re: Individual Writers Seeking Projects to Join, Post Here
Is there anyone out there in need of some biology questions (any level)?
The nature of my current studies have resulted in my having access to a relative overabundance of clues and question fragments relating to human biology. Since my home institution has not indicated any interest in my services, I can now offer them to any ongoing tournament projects that might find a good use for them.
I'm an extreme biology specialist and much less useful on any other subject, but if you're really desperate, I do have limited question-producing abilities in history, as well.

I get the feeling that housewrites for next year are kind of in a state of flux right now? And maybe it would be a good time to revive this thread?
I know I, personally, would be very interested in contributing and/or editing music/arts/literature for something next year, so if anybody needs that, let me know.

For interested collaborators: viewtopic.php?f=9&p=285099#p285099
Would like collaborators for categories I do not have solid knowledge of. This means everything except history, religion, mythology, economics, and geo/CE. I'm still not sure if I want to make it a housewrite, since the fall does lend itself to housewrites better, but I'm also very interested in trying to make the tournament work as packet-submission.

I am interested in working on a fall project, although not in a head editing capacity, probably in history. I would prefer it to be regular or regular minus (like Fall) and would be intrigued in working on a packet submission project.
