Sports Side Event/Tournament Set (Need Writers!)

Post by Francis the Talking France »

Hi everyone,

As notable sports fans on the quiz bowl group on Facebook, Ryan Rosenberg, Tom Moore and I have decided to write a sports set that will mostly be five or six packets, and we are looking for writers. This is subject to change based on interest and such. We are looking to make the set harder than High School trash, but not anything too difficult that it would limit the better sports trash players.

The distribution will most likely be as follows:
Baseball 5/5
Football 5/5 (3/3 NFL 2/2 College)
Basketball 4/4 (3/3 NBA 1/1 College)
Hockey 2/2
Soccer 2/2
Other 2/2 (Movies/Olympics/Boxing and other less followed sports)

We need some more writers, so anyone who is interested in contributing to this can do so.

Not to sound like a dick, but you could make this tournament a lot harder than "HS Trash" and still not alienate many of the "better' sports players, unless you are specifically referring to HS "trash" players. Regardless, it might be a good idea to determine who your target audience is, if you have the experience and/or ability to write a decent set, if you have enough packets to handle a variety of formats, and finally if there is a demand for your set. If you don't think that you can meet the second item on that list, you may want to actively seek collegiate editorial help with this set.

Well our first idea in offering this set was to use it as a side event at HSNCT or other large high school tournaments, which of course has tons of high school players. Also, a lot of people at HSNCT do not like trash, but those who do would probably like to play something like this before or after the event.

The current goal here is to not only advertise the idea, but obviously gain some more writers, especially experienced ones.

These are good points, and I think that's something that needs to be decided--whether this is supposed to be a college-level set that better high school players can enjoy, or a solely high school level set. I'm personally in favor of the first option, but it's not my decision alone.

As for writing experience/ability, we'll be looking to recruit at least one more experienced editor, possibly more if this ends up being a longer/more difficult set. This isn't a formal announcement, but we're trying to see if there's sufficient interest from people in either playing or writing.

Hi. I like sports. I am also an experienced QBer/Trash player and I want to write some questions for you while my team is on hiatus due to me having a baby. You should have me write some stuff for you.

EDIT: What is being offered in exchange for questions? Goodwill?

ANOTHER EDIT: My wife gave birth but we both now "have" a baby. I think the wording is correct.

We'd love to have you on board. We don't anticipate making a lot of money from this, as the fees should be pretty low ($5-$10 per person), but what is made will be redistributed to the people who worked on this (likely on a proportional basis).

I am mostly kidding about compensation. I just need to be writing questions, and have some reason to do it.

Anyone who knows NFL or College Football, we need a writer for that. We have a dearth of writers who know football.

I don't really have a lot of writing experience with sports, but I have a lot of playing experience and I'm looking to branch into writing. I can pretty much help out in any sports category you need questions in, and I can fill any gaps in football. Approximately how long would you want tossups to be?

Approximately 6-7 lines, although there's definitely room on either side of that. The difficulty is meant to be accessible to anyone with an interest in sports, although there is definitely room for more difficult answer lines.

Since this isn't supposed to be a ridiculously hard tournament, if a subject only has a 2/2 distribution is there even room for a really tough question?

We're actually pretty set with soccer, but if you'd like to write a different sport (especially the NFL) that'd be great.

Update: This set (as long as it comes to fruition) will probably end up with five or six packets of tossups only. This is namely due to the fact that a.) I'm not interested in there being a full 10-11 packet side event that no one might play. b.) I think between Matt, Ryan and I, we're hard-pressed for time as is, so might as well cancel out bonuses. If everything goes the way I want it to, this might be something that could be played at HSNCT or just a side event that anyone could use.

If you're still remotely interested in this, shoot me a PM.

I can help with any sports you need.

Baseball preferred, but any sports (including NFL as previously requested) are possible.

What is the latest on this? Do you still need writers? Has this been run, or are we still looking for a venue?

Well my personal intention was for this to be a side event. But this is pretty low on my list of things to do. When I get a laptop, this will be sort of resurrected more epically than northern Ohioans wishful thinking when the Browns came back to Cleveland. But that laptop is not going to be for a while though...

but fear not, I take study hall every year in place of real classes, so when I lose all the total motivation in my life, I can get on the computer and crank out some tossups on your favorite Nepalian baseball players.
