GUERRILLA IV - Chicago, IL - Saturday, 3/31

Post by Mike Bentley »

This is an announcement for GUERRILLA IV. This tournament will take place on 3/31 after the ICT finals in the ICT hotel. We will order pizza.

This is an open tournament. Anyone can play.

QUESTIONS:

As the name of the tournament implies, this is a guerrilla tournament, meaning that it will not be centrally edited. It'd be great if someone not playing in this tournament could receive the packets and remove duplicates (and even better if someone wanted to do minimal editing), but it's likely packets will just be read ad-hoc by the writers.

Anyway, please write a packet of 24 (or more) tossups (no bonuses) following something approximating standard ACF distribution. You have some leeway here, but make sure the regular categories are at least included to some extent.

In terms of difficulty, please aim for "Regionals Plus", i.e. somewhere around the level of BARGE or Minnesota Open.

Also, this year I'm imposing a rule of NO THEMES. After 3 years of playing themed packets, I think these are played out and the tournament as a whole will be more enjoyable without them.

FEE:

This tournament is free to anyone playing on a team that writes a packet. If there's enough interest in a second bracket for people that didn't write a packet, you'll be able to play for a fee of somewhere between $5 and $10 that will go towards buying food for the people who did bother to write questions. However, there's no guarantee that this bracket will actually materialize so you might as well just write a packet.

LOGISTICS:

TBA.

REGISTERED TEAMS:
Chris Borglum / Ahamd Ragab / Billy Beyer / Jeff Hoppes
Harrison Brown / Mark Morris
Rob Carson / Auroni Gupta / Matt Bollinger / Mike Bentley
Jonathan Thompson / Jake Sundberg / Drew Scheeler / Matt Hayes
Daichi Ueda / Shantanu Jha / Marshall Steinbaum / Matt Menard
Penn
Dan Donohue / Kevin Malis

A team of myself, Ahmad Ragab, Billy Beyer, and Jeff Hoppes will play this. I'm guessing that through my large contribution, this team will have the highest combined age of any in the field, so at least we've got that to hang our hat on.

Ok, this tournament is officially happening on Saturday after the ICT. We will order pizza so that people don't need to leave to go get dinner (not like there are many places to eat near the ICT hotel anyway).

If I am indeed doing copy-editing/repeat removal/quality control for this, I would recommend not putting in powers. Or if the consensus goes against that, letting me put them in for the entire set so people have a single person to blame.

The final product should have super powers and regular powers. Mik, feel free to do some copy-editing, etc., but based on the past three tournaments, most questions won't be done until around the start of the tournament.

Are any other people interested in playing in this tournament? I'd really like to get at least 5 teams so we can hold a "viable" "tournament". Each year they've been a lot of fun, and it only costs you 6 or so tossups to play.

As far as I know, I will be moderating at ICT and would like to play this tournament. If there are people who are okay taking on a fairly inexperienced writer who is decidedly mediocre at quiz bowl, then I'm your guy.

I am not sure if I will form a team or be a free agent, but I will almost certainly play.
Edit: Four people from Chicago will play as a team.

I have updated the main post with the current field. I am going to cap this tournament at 5 teams unless a sudden wave of people sign up, in which case we can open it up to maybe 7 teams. Pending what Daichi's doing, there's still room for a fifth team at this tournament, so sign up soon.

Ok, in that case the field is closed unless people want to join the Mark Morris team which to my knowledge has just 2 people, or if they can find another team to take us up to 7 total teams.

To give extra incentive to a 7th team to write a packet, I'll pay for that team's pizza.

Also, I don't really care how you produce a packet, so long as it's produced. If there are people not playing this tournament who want to write some freelance questions and you can convince them to do so for you, that's fine with me.

I don't know if I will actually be able to attend this (as my ASU teammates might have other plans), but I'd be willing to donate a packet of my own questions that were never submitted to anything. I have many more questions in certain subjects than I'll ever be able to use on ACF submissions with 1/1 quotas per packet, and I'd love to see them find some use. These questions already exist and I can send you a random mix of 25-40 tossups if you give me sufficient notice to send them before flying to Chicago. Obviously, I can make no guarantees on the exact subject distribution or quality of these questions.

Ok, so it looks like there are questions that could materialize for a 7th team. Dan et al, you guys should coordinate with Ian, Kenneth and Mik (the nominal "editor") to make sure there are enough questions for a packet that resembles something close to a regular distribution.

Eric, you guys still need to write a packet (or find questions through some other similar means).

BTW, if anyone else is still interested, I've reversed my position on adding teammates (not least since Mark may not get into Chicago until like 4 AM on Saturday...) (EDIT: Team is full now) I'd prefer it if they could write a couple questions, but that's not strictly necessary. PM me if you have any interest.

My concern is more that he may end up deciding he wants to sleep rather than play. But either way, I'm happy to have more teammates.

EDIT: Looks like our team will be me/Mark/Aaron Dos Remedios/Charles Martin. So we're good for teammates.

Did we set a firm start time for this shindig? For people playing history bowl on Sunday, we'll need a little time after the ICT finals to pay Nick Clusserath for registration.

Also, could we get your cell #, Mike?

I will announce the details of the tournament following the ICT finals and the History Bowl registration stuff. Thus, if you're playing in this tournament, be in the finals ballroom tomorrow.

I'm going to order pizza from Papa Johns and will have them available for post-ICT period so people can eat before the tournament. I will be ordering 12 large pizzas with a variety of standard toppings. The fee will be around $14 per pizza. You will need to provide your own drinks (there ought to be water at least in the ballroom). If you don't want to eat pizza, that's fine, but we're not going to delay the tournament to let you go buy food.

We will need 3 hotel rooms and 3 laptops to run this tournament. If you have such a room or laptop available, please let me know.

Please have your packet available on a flash drive so we can easily put them on laptops.

If you want my cell phone number, send me an e-mail or a PM.

By the way, if you're playing and definitely don't want pizza, let me know.

Many thanks to Mike for arranging all this, ordering the pizza, and making it run efficiently (or as efficiently as possible, with room changes and other typical stuff). I don't know who won, but I enjoyed the chance to play after reading all day. And now there's a Thai novel to go learn about. Huzzah.

I will probably have stats later. Some rounds were given adhoc powers, so they're not going to be very reliable. I think either my team or Ike's team won.
