National History Bee and Bowl Question of the Day
Question of the day...... ????????
During this republic's creation, Mariano Vallejo was captured and imprisoned. Its first and only president was William B. Ide, who governed from its capital at Sonoma. It lasted for twenty-three days, when John C. Fremont, who had encouraged its creation, arrived and claimed this republic in the name of the United States. For 10 points, name this temporary state that revolted against Mexico in 1846 in what was to become California, and was named after its animal-emblazoned insignia??

Well, there are actually three sequences of words terminated by ?'s, none of which are proper English questions.

National History Bee and Bowl Question of the day
Question of the day..........???????
This scholar was the first person to translate historian Theophylactus Simocattes into Latin. His influences included his onetime roomate, Domenico Novara, who introduced him to a tract by Regiomontanus. After reading that book, he worked out a system that eschewed deferants, equants, and epicycles. As he died, he authorized the publication of Six Books Concerning the Revolutions of the Heavenly Orbs, which outlined a heliocentric theory of the universe. For 10 points, name this Polish predecessor of Galileo??
And you answer is??

Re: National History Bee and Bowl Question of the day
I have two serious questions. First, given that new threads are being started for each one of these and the responses are generally 90% humor (which I wager is not the intent here), would it not make more sense to put this on the History Bowl/Bee website itself? (I haven't been able to find it there.) Second, what exactly are we expected to do with the questions - do you want us to converse in this thread about what the possible answer might be, or are we supposed to look at the question and answer it for ourselves only, or something else? If the first option, it might be worthwhile making these harder (since most people know "Bear Flag Republic" or "Copernicus" of giveaway clues); if the second, it again might make more sense to put them on the website instead.

As a rule, if you're going to do this, keep your posts on this whole thing in one thread, with the normal font size/style.
As a question: what's the goal of copying & pasting questions from the sample packet available on the NHBB site here?

I think the last thing qb should devote its resources towards is "write full-length questions on overly hard things to post in a thread on hsqb, and for that use only."nadph wrote:If the first option, it might be worthwhile making these harder (since most people know "Bear Flag Republic" or "Copernicus" of giveaway clues)

Re: National History Bee and Bowl Question of the Day
I agree, and given that apparently these are all on the sample packet posted online, it makes little sense to keep posting these.Fred wrote:I think the last thing qb should devote its resources towards is "write full-length questions on overly hard things to post in a thread on hsqb, and for that use only."nadph wrote:If the first option, it might be worthwhile making these harder (since most people know "Bear Flag Republic" or "Copernicus" of giveaway clues)
