Gladiator Open 2012 (MS-03) (3/31/12)

Post by MichaelFalk »

Dear students, teachers, and coaches:

St. Mary's Visitation School in Elm Grove, WI is thrilled to announce that we will host Gladiator Open 2012 on Saturday, March 31, 2011. This is an open junior high (grades 6-8) quiz bowl tournament to played on NAQT's MS-03 question set. The entry fee is $60 per team, with a $10 discount for bringing a working buzzer system and a $10 discount on a second (and subsequent) team.

I know the time frame will be short, but this should be a qualifier for MSNCT. You can let me know of your interest here in this thread, or by emailing me: mfalk, at symbol, stmaryeg, dot, org.

Thanks! We hope to see you at SMV on March 31.

Hi, all--

Due to two last-minute additions, we were able to host 12 teams for the Gladiator Open 2012 tournament at St. Mary's Visitation School in Elm Grove, WI, on the MS-03 question set. Teams were divided into two six-team divisions. The top two finishers in each division advanced to the Executive bracket; the middle two to the Legislative bracket; the last two to the Judicial bracket.

Call of the Wild Division:
1. Station A (5-0)
2. St. Raymond (4-1)
3. SMV Blue (3-2)
4. Station C (2-3)
5. Keith Blue (1-4)
6. SMV Black (0-5)

White Fang Division:
1. Prairie (5-0)
2t. Station B (3-2; 21.46 PPB)
2t. SMV Gold (3-2; 20.86 PPB)
2t. Quest (3-2; 18.78 PPB)
5. Keith Red (1-4)
6. SMV White (0-5)

The Circle Of Death was played off on half-packets with bonuses; Quest beat SMV Gold 170-110 and then defeated Station B 120-110 to earn its spot in the top bracket.

Executive Bracket:
1. Station A (3-0)
2. Prairie (2-1)
3. Quest (1-2)
4. St. Raymond (0-3)

Legislative Bracket:
5. SMV Gold (3-0)
6. Station C (2-1)
7. SMV Blue (1-3)
8. Station B (0-3)

Judicial Bracket:
9. Keith Blue (3-0)
10. SMV White (2-1)
11. Keith Red (1-2)
12. SMV Black (0-3)

The top ten individual scorers in the preliminary games received books; we played an individual shootout with the top ten scorers. Here are the results:
1. Pranav (Station A; 5/0/2; 65 pts)
2. Bryce (Prairie; 2/3/0; 60 pts)
3. Matthew (Station A; 3/0/1; 40 pts)
4. James (SMV Blue; 1/1/1; 20 pts)
5t. Patrick (St. Raymond; 1/0/0; 15 pts)
5t. Will (SMV Gold; 1/0/0; 15 pts)
5t. Colin (Quest; 1/0/0; 15 pts)
5t. Declan (Station C; 1/0/0; 15 pts)
9t. Janani (Station B; 0/0/0; 0 pts)
9t. Sawyer (Prairie; 0/0/0; 0 pts)

My thanks to the players, coaches, and parents who spent their Saturday to come up to Wisconsin to play. Many thanks also to my guest moderators Alana Parey, Allen Witkowski, and Jeff Price, along with statistician extraordinaire Beth Parey; and to my co-coaches Burke Seeberg and Kylie Daemmrich for making this thing happen. I had a great time today and I hope you did too.
