Carnal Embrace VI at Arcadia High School (2/20/12)

Post by Balboa »

Arcadia Quiz Bowl is pleased to announce:

Arcadia Carnal Embrace VI

LOCATION: Arcadia High School, 180 Campus Dr., Arcadia CA 91007. The games will be held in the portable buildings at the west end of campus.

DATE: The tournament will be held on Monday, February 20, 2012 (President's Day). Check-in begins at 8:00 am, and first round should begin around 9 am. Schedules will be distributed at check-in.

FORMAT: The tournament will be using NAQT IS-111. The tournament will adhere to Official NAQT Rules. Each round will be run as untimed, 10-question halves, with a preliminary round robin followed by reseeding based on results from the round robin phase. Seedings in the individual sub-brackets will be determined by the overall win-loss record.

Ties for reseedings will be resolved based on points per bonus, followed by points per game.

As stated in the NAQT HSNCT (High School National Championship Tournament) qualification rules, the top 15% of the field will qualify for the HSNCT held in Atlanta, Georgia. We are also provisionally a platinum-certified qualifier for the PACE NSC at Wash. U in St. Louis

ELIGIBILITY: All high school students are welcome to attend.

PRICING STRUCTURE:
Base fee = $80 for one team, $70 per team after the first
-$5 for each fully-functional buzzer system (must have at least four working buzzers on both sides)
-$10 for traveling distances over 100 miles, according to Google Maps
-$10 moderator discount (this is going to be tentative, depending on the field)
-$20 for each team that has not competed in an NAQT tournament in the past 2 years.

Minimum fee = $60/team

Please make checks payable to: Arcadia High School Quiz Bowl. Please do not make a check out to any other person or entity. Checks, or cash will be due at the start of the tournament during registration. Should your team not be able to provide the payment at this time, and would like to send their registration fee in advance or later, please contact the Tournament Director at [email protected] to make the proper arrangements.

PRIZES: Prizes will be offered to the top teams, as well as to the top individual scorers.

REGISTRATION: The tournament director is Andrew Wang. The advisor of this tournament will be Mr. Christopher Schultz. If you are interested in attending or have any questions, please e-mail Andrew Wang at [email protected] OR reply to this thread with the following information:

1) Your school's name
2) The number of teams you are bringing
3) The number of buzzer systems
4) Any moderators you have to offer

Updates about the tournament will primarily be through the Southern California High School Quiz Bowl listserv; in addition, they should also be posted online on the tournament announcement section on hsquizbowl.org.

Thanks,
Andrew Wang

Hi,

Sorry for the inconvenience, but could this tournament be moved to 2/20 (national holiday). University would like to attend, but considering how many of our players have All-State Orchestra that weekend (a once-a-year weekend thing) and won't be back until Sunday afternoon, only a Monday tournament would work. Let me know if this potential Monday tournament would be feasible. Thank you for your understanding.

Science Olympiad Regionals is also on 2/18. A date change may increase field size.

Would a 2/20 date work for the hosts? Considering its a Monday off from school, I'm assuming most people will be free, unless they are traveling (in which case they would be gone during the weekend as well). And no academic competition conflicts that I know of occur on weekdays. In short, does Monday 2/20 sound good to everyone (making the date change as early as possible would be best so that people can plan their schedules)? Thanks.

We can definitely consider Sunday Feb. 19 and Monday Feb. 20 as possibilities - I'll update once I hear from more schools.

I know for a fact that RB won't be able to attend if the tournament is held on the 18th--that's San Diego Science Olympiad, and virtually all of RB Quizbowl is in it.

It's going to be hard to get transport since we usually have parents drive and a lot of people are working that day.

Transportation could be an issue, though I'm guessing at least one parent would be available for each team and you could carpool. Plus, it is a national holiday, so many jobs will not have work that day or have lighter loads than usual.

Similarly, many people have religious services on Sundays, so I believe 2/20 on Monday would be best. Any other opinions?

If it is moved to the 20th (not 19th for many people have church), I believe Torrey Pines may be able to send at least one team.

We have moved this tournament to Monday the 20th of February to accomodate teams with conflicts. Who is planning on coming? We would like to get an estimate so we can proceed with securing the necessary facilities. Thanks!

Field update:

University
Chadwick School

Irvine (3 + 2 buzzers)
North Hollywood (2 + 1 buzzer)
Santa Monica (3)
Canyon Crest (3 +2 buzzers)

Canyon Crest Academy can send three teams and bring two buzzer systems. No moderators, though, sorry.

I've heard NoHo A beat Canyon Crest A in the final (though Canyon Crest had beaten NoHo earlier in the day) and that University may have finished behind them. Torrey Pines was not there and La Jolla was missing its best players.

Stats would be wonderful to have though too.

I apologize for the delay on stats, but I'm still working on combining the afternoon and morning rounds. Attempting to merge the two SQBS files has not worked out for me, so I've resorted to simply reentering the afternoon stats on my computer (which only has the morning rounds).

As for results, North Hollywood A defeated Canyon Crest A in a one game final.

Are stats going to be up soon? I'm sorry, but two weeks is a really long time to get stats up, even if you do have to re-enter them manually.

The stats have been finished and were sent to NAQT last night.

I greatly apologize for the long delay, and I assure all you guys that this isn't a reflection on Arcadia's tournament running ability. It was just my own incompetence.
