Highest PP20TUH in a high school game

Post by pblessman »

The Culver Academies team scored 680 points on 18 TUs heard Saturday, January 28, which converts to a PP20TUH of 755.6 (stat line was 10-7-0 with a PPB of 27.1). NAQT has listed this as the highest PP20TUH in a high school game they have stats for (http://www.naqt.com/stats/team-game-ppt ... fficulty=3). Does anybody have a listing of records in non-NAQT matches? Have other high school teams scored more than this on a PP20TUH basis? I would like to send a blurb to our local newspaper about this, but I want to get my facts straight first.

State College had a 790-point game at the 2010 NSC: http://pace-nsc.org/2010stats/2010_PACE ... l.html#t58.

Maggie Walker had 780-point and 760-point games at the same tournament: http://pace-nsc.org/2010stats/2010_PACE ... l.html#t27.

Maggie Walker had a 770-point game at the 2011 NSC: http://www.pace-nsc.org/2011nsc/2011_PA ... l.html#t28.

It's worth noting that all of these results were on the 20-point-power NSC format. I haven't looked at earlier NSC results because they were on the old PACE format, making meaningful comparisons even more difficult.

EDIT to add more results:

Maggie Walker had 800-point and 810-point games at the 2011 PSAT/NMSQT: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... detail/#t9.

Maggie Walker had a 765-point game at the 2010 Ben Cooper Memorial: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... ats/games/.

When comparing across various formats, it may be best to calculate a "standard candle" score, acting as if there were no powers (nor negs, though in cases like this that's unlikely to be a factor) nor bouncebacks. None of the PACE NSC scores survive above 700 when those two things are deducted.

The 780 by Maggie Walker at VCU Spring is likely the highest score ever achieved on such a metric, and if memory serves me, whoever was moderator for that game attested to the fact that MW just spaced out on the two bonus answers they missed, keeping them from a super-perfect game.

Painfully, I also can't help but note the final of PHSAT 2010, wherein Hunter put up 765 (700 without powers) against us.

Very cool! Thanks for the quick posts! Somebody should maybe collate this info in a QBWiki page so it doesn't get lost in the mists of history? Volunteers?

considering the stage of the tournament, this remains the craziest thing I have seen and seems worth a mention here even though it falls short of the standard:

2005 NAQT HSNCT: Fifth Playoff Round - Winners' Bracket
Thomas Jefferson A 885, Walton 95
(Walton finished tied for eighth at HSNCT)

26 tossups: 680.76 PP20TUH
(removing powers, they got 14, the score moves to 815 and the PP20TUH to 626.92)
(if powers were 20s, the score moves to 955 and the PP20TUH to 734.6)

cited in Ken Jennings' Brainiac, among other places.

Just as a clarification, this is not a "new rule" in the sense of Bill Maher makes pithy suggestions about discourse, but a "New Rule" in the sense of "Fred's name is in red, indicating that he is a member of the staff and his dicta should be followed."
