2012 North Kansas City Varsity Invitational Tournament

Hello Coaches,

The North Kansas City Quizbowl Team is excited to announce our annual North Kansas Varsity Invitational Tournament. Like last year, we will be buying our questions from the company HSAPQ, using their Tournament-23 set.

This event will be similar to the last 3 years of NKC tournaments. We will be using pyramidal questions. We will be using a slightly modified version of the official format used at NAQT’s National Championship, so games will be 20 tossups long, and each tossup will have a non-rebounding 30-point bonus attached. Every tossup will be worth 10 points, unless players buzz in early, before a specific mark in the question, in which case they will earn 15 points for a “power.” We will also be using -5 point penalties for incorrect interrupts on tossups. This format is rarely used in Kansas City despite being the most common format nationwide, and a popular one in other parts of the state, so hopefully this will add some variety to the local circuit. Also, this year more of the questions in the MSHSAA state series will be similarly pyramidal than in the past, so this will help your team be able to prepare for that.

We will also be instituting a 6-player cap on teams. Be aware that, even though we call this a “varsity” tournament, schools are encouraged to sign up multiple teams, including those with JV-level players on them, if you have interested players who want to get more experience.

The field of this tournament will be capped at X teams, although if there is demand and we can procure extra staff, we may be willing to expand the field size. Teams will be entered into the field on a first-come, first-served basis. If the field fills, we will offer all teams a 10 or 11 game schedule, We hope your team enjoys the rare chance in the KC area to play that many matches in a single day.

Our entry fees are as follows:

$65 for the first team a school enters into the field.
$55 for every additional team a school enters into the field.
-$5 for every buzzer a team brings (maximum of 3)
-$5 for every 100 miles a team travels.

This tournament is being sanctioned by the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, which is an organization that helps promote and direct quizbowl tournaments around the state. There are other MOQBA-sponsored events being run in Western Missouri which you can find out about at their website, http://moqba.org/calendar/.

This tournament is also going to qualify the top teams for the 2012 PACE National Scholastics Championship. PACE Nationals are being run in St. Louis this year, on the campus of Washington University from June 8th-9th, making it easier than ever for teams in the area to attend nationals. If you are looking to attend nationals this year, our event will be a great chance for your team to win a bid.

If your team is interested in attending, please email [email protected] to register. We hope to see you at Northtown!

As clarified on moquizbowl, the field cap is 18 for now; it may be raised if enough staff is available.

With 19 teams, we split into pools of 10 and 9 and did a round robin within each pool. After that, the top 2 in each pool played a crossover playoff. After round 10 Liberty and Savannah were both undefeated going into their round 11 match. Given the time of day both teams preferred to shorten the best-of-three final to a one game final, which Savannah won 440-125. Truman took 3rd over St. Pius X 260-220 after St. Pius powered tossup 19 and 30'd the bonus to tie the game at 220. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Top 8 individuals were:
1. Austin K., Savannah, 99.38 ppg
2. Bradley D., Liberty, 87.22 ppg
3. Andy M., Truman, 77.50 ppg
4. Kelsey M., Liberty, 67.22 ppg
5. Ryan F., Park Hill South, 65.62 ppg
6. Myles S., Oak Grove, 63.33 ppg
7. Nick M., William Chrisman, 62.78 ppg
8. Jonathan C., Park Hill A, 46.25 ppg
