NCIS II (2/18/12) @ Cave Spring HS (Roanoke, VA)

Post by kamikaze »

The Cave Spring High School Academic Team is happy to announce our spring tournament being held at our school (3712 Chapparal Dr., Roanoke, VA, 24018) on February 18, 2012. The NCIS II will be a vendor set and is scheduled the week before VHSL States. We're hoping that this tournament will serve as 1) a VHSL season ender for schools in our region; and 2) practice for VHSL States for teams that have qualified for the tournament. We are hoping that winter weather won't be too bad that weekend but if so, we'll postpone to a later weekend.

AFFILIATION: NAQT & PACE

QUESTIONS: We've been reserved the IS-113 question set for this tournament.

FORMAT: Our field cap is around 18 but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. Each round will be 20 questions with 20 bonus questions, untimed. No math computation questions. We're trying to guarantee at least eight rounds of competition but depending on the field and what the majority of teams want, we can try to accommodate by doing more rounds. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and we usually award the top ten individuals with some sort of prize. Neg King/Queen award is also available.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work)-no limit to # of systems you can bring
Early registration: $5 off if you commit a month before the tournament date (January 18, 2012)
New team discount: Teams that have never been to the CSI may receive a 50% discount on their first team registered (any additional teams from that school have to be brought in at full price).

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players.

FOOD: As always, we will provide a simple breakfast, free of charge. We have been providing a simple lunch consisting of pizza, fruit, chips and a drink for lunch at a reasonable price.

If you have any questions or wish to register, feel free to contact Bob Powers at csquizbowl <at> yahoo <dot> com. We look forward to seeing you all here and hope for some good weather that weekend.

Quick update with stats to come soon. Christiansburg A cleared the field and went undeafeated today. No team really came close as they just set a whole bunch of tournament records. Matt Moschella lead his team and was the top scorer at the tournament with a 150+ PPG average. Blacksburg A came in second. Blacksburg B and Honaker A were tied for the third place slot in the championship division but the tiebreaker was head-to-head, which Blacksburg B had the advantage. EC Glass A was a contender for the championships but had to leave after lunch was over because their bus driver's wife went into labor two weeks early. I'll post stats when I get the chance. Again, congratulations to Christiansburg A, Blacksburg A and B for qualifying for nationals!

Did absolutely anyone expect Christianburg to be anywhere near as good as they are this year? This is the surprise team of the season. I can't name a more underrated (or ignored) team. 23ppb is really really good on this set, which we heard last week and was not very easy. Notably, that conversion was better than every team except Richard Montgomery at Charter's tournament last week.

Needless to say, this team is for real. Matt is a superstar and it's a shame i haven't been able to see this team in person this year.

He beat us handily alone at New Kent. The man is a beast! This definitely needs to be recognized in the next rankings. Top 30, at least.

We see Matt quite often, and knew that he was very good. He put up good numbers at NAQT nationals last year (61.40 PP20TUH). When we saw him at ACE camp this summer, he was one of the top individuals there. He and Daniel from GDS as well as a few players from Dorman and the Atlanta metro area were consistently among the best there. He has continued to improve since camp, and has been steadily improving as the year has gone on. We probably have the best team we've ever had at Blacksburg, but we can't get by the cross county rivals this year. Our team won VHSL AA states two years ago, and put up 17 ppb on an IS set that previous fall. This year's team puts up 19.5 ppb, and we can't even qualify for states due to the strength of Cave Spring and Christiansburg.
