Eyes That Do Not See III

Post by Mike Bentley »

This is a preliminary announcement for Eyes That Do Not See III. Like the two previous versions of this tournament, it will consist of about 100 visual arts tossups presented as pyramidal PowerPoint slides. The tournament will cost $5 to play/mirror. I'll probably have it finished by Minnesota Open, but that's not 100% guaranteed.

I haven't picked a ton of answers yet so I can't say what the difficulty will be, but it likely won't be any harder than Eyes II.

If anyone can give me their ArtStor access that would be a huge help towards getting this tournament completed. Send me an e-mail at [email protected].

I now have almost all of this tournament "written" and am in the process of compiling it into PowerPoint. I think my prediction of it being no harder than last year (and probably a little easier) will hold true.

The tournament is now finished. It's being mirrored at the Minnesota, Penn and possibly UCSD mirrors of Minnesota Open. If any other tournaments want to mirror it, let me know.

At the Minnesota site, Douglas Graebner demolished everyone. I believe Ike got a distant second.

I don't think there are any other mirrors. I'll try to post this later this week after correcting a few mistakes.

At the Penn site, Chris Ray beat Jonathan Magin on the last tossup when, going in tied, Jonathan yelled out an answer after someone else had buzzed and was duly negged. I believe Ted Gioia was third and I was fourth. A good time was had by all.

Sorry, I mean, will be found (or, you know, a location that the two previous incarnations can be found).

I would be very surprised if a link was not posted in this thread since Mike already posted links for the previous two iterations in this thread.

I thought this was a fantastic tournament. This was the first time I got to play it with a decent amount of people, so I had a ton of fun. Congratulations to Doug; he is beast at this format.

I am mirroring BARGE in January, would you be opposed to us mirroring this? (Even if you post it online we can still just ask people not read it and be honest since it's a side event I guess, I just wanted to make sure you'd be OK with us doing that.)

I'd been looking forward to playing this for a while and it lived up to expectations. Thanks to Mike for writing this and Minnesota for hosting this.

Yeah you guys can do this, although I will be posting the set and opening it up for discussion.

I might want to do something similar at our SCT, but I'm not sure how much interest there is since Yale's probably already played it.

This was another typically fine set--I'm sure Mike noticed it when running it but there were occasionally a few misplaced slides (like a slide repeating itself or the giveaway slide coming too early).

I'd like to see a set that tries to ask different sorts of questions visually. You could potentially do some questions involving political cartoons or historical illustrations or portions of photographs (like, I dunno, a tossup on the photograph of Oswald getting shot, or of LBJ being sworn in).

Actually, we had to run right after the finals, so we missed this. I, for one, would be interested.

I think you'd find that a tournament like this would have to have a weird distribution in order to work. It would probably reward weird types of knowledge like knowing what a historical figure looked like and would have to rely way more on things like political cartoons than a regular history tournament would. I'd certainly play such a tournament if someone wrote it, but I think it would take a long time to think of topics and then find images that work well in this format. Even with art it's sort of hard (I'll elaborate on some of the shortcomings of this tournament in a later thread).

Yeah, it certainly would have to have a weird distribution. I might take a whack at it at some point because I don't like distributions anyway and spend a lot of time staring at historical photographs.

This tournament was a delight to play, and I'm very glad that Matt Weiner and Chris Ray insisted that it occur after a very long day. Thanks very much for writing it; I especially liked the questions on Rem Koolhaas and the Stata Center (which both Ted and I negged even after spending time inside it).

Could a separate thread be made for discussing this? It doesn't have to be private or anything, but I've accidentally just discovered that Rem Koolhaas came up in this set.
