League Database - Please add to this thread!

Post by Great Bustard »

Hi All,
I’m in the process of putting together the first-ever (as far as I can tell) database of quiz bowl leagues. Note: a league by this definition is not just a single tournament, nor is it a TV show where if you lose one match you're out (though if certain matches of the league are televised, that's fine). If you are familiar with a league of any sort, no matter where it runs, what question provider it uses, no matter how horrific any of its regulations, please post the following information in this thread:
-Name of League
-State(s) Served
-Area or School the league is based in
-Geographic Restrictions? (i.e. is the league limited to teams from a certain state, county, etc.?)
-Question Provider
-Game Format
-Competition Season (include dates if known, or just say something like “Monday afternoons, November – March”)
-League Website (if one exists)
-Contact Person (ideally, this should be the person who coordinates the league)
-Contact Person email (or phone # or position if email unavailable)
-Deadline for Registration for 2011-2012 season
N.B.: Please highlight the name of the league in bold at the top of your post so that others can easily recognize if information on a particular league has been posted or not!
I have posted information on a league below as an example.
I have come to realize over the past year that there are probably over 100 leagues around the country, but often these leagues are isolated in terms of their interaction with the wider quiz bowl community. We need to reach out to them in order to encourage the spread of not only good quiz bowl, but also things like the existence of ACE Camps, National Championships, the full spectrum of question providers, and tournaments outside their league structure. Also, this way prospective teams can learn about leagues they might be able to join. The information posted below will be combined with my own research in a database that will be online by the end of July at a site to be revealed when ready.
One last minor point, if you know the email address of the contact person, please include it, but do it in the form: firstpartofemail at secondpartofemail so as to avoid spam. If you don’t think the contact person would want their email posted, then don’t post it, but then do post their position (e.g. Basque Language teacher at Walla Walla High School, Walla Walla, WA) so I can reach out to them. Thanks!

Greater Miami Conference
State(s): Ohio
Area: Northern Greater Cincinnati
Geographic Restrictions?: Tied to the Greater Miami Conference athletic league, so entry and exit from the quizbowl league is only by entry and exit from the athletic league; all schools in the athletic league participate in quizbowl.
Question Provider: unknown, but it's probably one of the standard providers of bad OAC questions.
Game Format: OAC (Ohio Academic Competition)
Competition Season: Wednesday afternoons from December to February, with a league tournament on a Saturday in February
League Website: http://gmcsports.com/confStandings.aspx?satc=153 - this website, which posts results from matches in the conference, is the closest thing to a league website.
Contact Person: unfortunately, I have no idea; my quizbowl coach at my old high school, Ken Clark, is the best I have.
Contact Person email: for the above-mentioned Ken Clark - clarkk at sycamoreschools dot org
Deadline for Registration for 2011-2012 season: N/A, owing to it being tied to an athletic league

Some digging around based on my roommate last year saying he captained a quiz bowl team got me the following:
Name of League: Shoreline High School Bowl
States Served: Connecticut
Area or School the league is based in: Southern Connecticut
Geographic Restrictions?: Presumably it's just schools from the area
Question Provider: Unknown, although a 1994 article mentions that the teams themselves would write the questions, and since byes are involved this is a possibility
Game Format: Unknown, but consider the fact that a game in which a team got "destroyed" was 165-10
Competition Season: October – May
League Website (if one exists): Unknown
Contact Person: Unknown, but very likely someone at Haddam-Killingworth since the finals are held there
Contact Person Email or Position: Unknown
Deadline for Registration for 2011-2012 Season: Unknown
The schools involved: Coginchaug, Haddam-Killingworth, Nathan Hale-Ray, Lyme-Old Lyme, Morgan, North Branford, Old Saybrook (the only one with NAQT experience), Valley Regional (Deep River), Westbrook
