SNEWT IX Official Announcement

Post by Theory Of The Leisure Flask »

(Cross-posted on Emily's behalf on the off-chance that there are interested parties who read this board and not Yahoo! -Chris)

"Swarthmore College Bowl is proud to present SNEWT IX, our annual modified ACF packet submission juniorbird. This year's tournament will be
held on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at Swarthmore College (Kohlberg Hall).

Eligibility: All team members must be undergraduates in their first or second year of intercollegiate, non-CBI competition. In addition, all team members must be enrolled at the same school in order to be eligible for the championship.

Fees: A school's first team has a base fee of $85, including breakfast and a pizza for lunch; second teams are $60, and all additional teams are $50. The minimum fee for a team is $40.
-$10 for a working buzzer
-$10 for an experienced moderator
-$10 for every 250 miles traveled (by Mapquest)
+$10 for an extra pizza (in addition to the one already provided for
each team)

Packet Submission Deadlines and Fees:
-$25 by midnight, Friday Oct. 1
-$15 by midnight, Wednesday Oct. 13
-$0 by midnight, Wednesday Oct. 27
+$15 by midnight, Wednesday Nov. 3
+$25 by midnight, Sunday Nov. 7
+$35 for anything submitted later, or for no packet at all from a
team required to submit one

Packet Writing Requirements: All teams with at least one second-year player must submit a packet. Teams from programs "new to the circuit" are neither required nor expected to write a packet. Teams composed entirely of first-year players from school with experienced programs are encouraged to write a packet – presumably with guidance from older players; contact me if you need to discuss an exemption.

Packet Guidelines/Format: We are asking for 25 tossups and 25 bonuses with a difficulty at or slightly below ACF Fall. Basic guidelines can be

found at http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~paik/acf/acfguide.html. If you have any more questions (about difficulty or style, for instance), you can contact me at eullman1 [at] swarthmore [dot] edu.

Literature- 5/5 (At least 1/1 each on American, British/Commonwealth, and non-English lit. Be sure to spread the questions over a number of time
periods.)

Science- 5/5 (At least 1/1 each on biology, chemistry, and physics. At least one question on math, and other disciplines may also be included, though are not required.)

History- 5/5 (Be sure to spread the questions over a number of cultures and time periods. *Serious* current events may be included, up to 1/1.)

Religion, Philosophy, Mythology- 2/3 or 3/2 (Roughly even split between the three areas; be sure to spread the questions over a number of cultures and time periods.)

Fine Arts- 2/3 or 3/2 (At least 1/1 each on classical music and visual arts. Film, dance, and jazz may also be included, but should not be emphasized.)

Social Sciences/Geography- 2/2 (At least 1/1 must be in the social sciences; no more than 1 question per each social science. The social sciences include, but are not limited to, psychology, economics, sociology, linguistics, archaeology, and political science.)

Trash/ General Knowledge/Sports- 2/2 (Try to spread the questions out
over different subcategories. Trashy current events go here.)

Your Choice- 1/1 (Anything you want. The questions should be in two different categories; fine arts, r/p/m, and social sciences are especially encouraged.)

Packet Format:

Keep categories separated; bonus prompts should be marked off simply by a carriage return and the number of points the prompt is worth in square brackets; answers should be marked off by ANSWER: and a space, boldface all essential parts.

To register, send packets, or request any additional information, please contact me at eullman1 [at] swarthmore [dot] edu

Sixteen teams came to SNEWT on Saturday; there were supposed to be eighteen, excet Yale just never showed up. Virginia swept the field with a 10-0 record. Maryland, Johns Hopkins, and Pitt A were in an 8-2 circle of death for second (they were 6-1 in the prelims and lost only to Virginia in the playoffs); Maryland emerged with the silver by virtue of PPG.

Top scorers (prelims only, and from memory):

1. Eric, Maryland
2. Someone from Pitt whose name I forget
3. Steve (?) from JHU
4. "Kai" from Virginia (Despite their efforts to rotate names every round, and forgo individual awards, one of the fake names still made the top four.)
Negs: "Pestilence", Swat B, with nine.

(Technically, Wren from Swat A had the highest PPG, but he only played 1 or 2 prelim rounds due to other commitments, and he was a house player, so we didn't give him anything.)

Full results sometime in the future.
