Okay, so we know that not many questions are written for this thing; we also know that we all want to play a tournament. Is anyone against making it partial packet sub? VCU could even give discounts on team entry fees based on how much they provide: maybe $5 for 4/4, $10 for 8/8, or something. Obviously, the priority would be submitting 4/4 or 5/5 science, since science writers aren't even nailed down yet.

Since I've heard that answer selection is done, we could even be given instructions on what to write, preventing repeats. This worked well for many people for CO Lit, and I don't see why we should do differently here when the tournament is pretty much in a worse state and has fewer writers working on it. Matt, you're a good dude, but you can't write a ~15 round tournament, even without science, in ten days.

I have quite a bit on my hands, but I suppose I could spare the time to write 2-3 lit or visual arts tossups if you still need any.

I'll gladly chip in, but don't expect much in terms of science from me. (Maybe I could pull off a stray earthsci or subatomic particle question, but even those areas are nearly guaranteed to suck.)

The only thing I could write competently at this level of difficulty is music. Maybe a little poetry too, I guess, if it's 19th century. If you need some, let me know.

By the way, Rich and I are still looking for teammates for this, and now that it looks like teams might be writing half-packets, I'm even more eager to find some soon. Any pairs left that would like to merge or free agents left who'd care to join?

A few things:

Dwight Wynne and Aaron Cohen will be covering most of the science for this tournament. Some physics assistance could still be quite useful, so holler at Dwight if you want to write that.

I will give you a $40 discount if you write a complete packet for use during your team's bye round BY WEDNESDAY the 5th. Since it will rightfully be considered my sole responsibility if this tournament doesn't have enough packets on Saturday, I cannot have people saying they will send me a packet at 2 AM Friday night and expecting me to just have faith that will happen (let alone deal with repeats and stuff in that scenario). There will be absolutely no exceptions made to this condition. Contact me ASAP if you want to commit to this option.

For various reasons, the difficulty for this tournament is now "between normal/Regionals and Nationals" rather than "CO level." Take that into account if you are writing a packet. The harder end of Cardinal Classic, Terrapin, etc is what I have in mind here.

OK, here's where I think the field is (updated 8/5/09):

9 teams

John Lawrence/Jonathan Magin/R Mason*
Silberman, Angelo, Cheyne, Berry
Gehring/Spencer/Carter/Rosenthal
Jha/Seal/Byrne/Casalapsi*
Y Chen/L Chen/ Z Zheng/N James
Watkins/Kirsch/Davis/Carson*
Mukherjee/Gioia/Ray
Tabachnick/White/Goff/Morlan
Charlie Dees/Jason Loy/Phil George/Will Butler*

*presumably hard at work on a packet. other people who are awaiting a couple of answers from me to write partial packets are not noted here.

Since 9 teams is pretty workable format-wise I am closing registration. Any further people interested in playing will need to join one of the shorthanded teams.

For the last two, I need to know if "I can write some questions" means the team in general will be taking advantage of the full packet-submission deal.
Sorry, maybe my e-mail to you didn't go through, Matt: Jonathan Magin, Rich, and myself are writing a full packet for discount. Unclaimed players, if one of you wants to join our team and help write the packet to get in on the discount, you should e-mail me ASAP. My email address can be found in one of my previous posts.

Yo, here's the logistics details for Saturday:

The entire tournament will take place in the Hibbs Building on our Monroe Park campus (aka "Academic Campus"). Please meet in Hibbs, room 403, by 8:30 AM. This is the same building where the summer tournaments were last year and where ACF Fall was in 2008, but is not the same building where Fake ICT was in March.
-The nominal address of the building is "900 Park Ave, Richmond VA" if you need to put something into your map software of choice, but be aware that Hibbs does not actually face the street, so you will have to park and then walk to the area where the building is in order to find it. I suggest printing out the appropriate campus maps and bringing them along--note that Hibbs is directly across from the Cabell Library, which will probably be easier for you to find if you have not been to the VCU campus before.
-It is almost certain that the one and only door to Hibbs which will be unlocked for the weekend is the door on the north (interior) side of the vestibule that is on the library side of the building. We will endeavor to have signs up that point you to this door.
-On Saturdays, parking on the street is free and available in most places around the campus; the best place to park for access to Hibbs is on one of the residential streets such as Park Avenue, Floyd Avenue, or West Avenue that branch off Harrison Street to the west near the Hibbs/library area. If you cannot find a space in that area, then you can try parking on Floyd Avenue near the Commons, or, further south, on Main Street. If all else fails, you should use the parking deck at Harrison and Broad, which is about three blocks north of the tournament building and will charge you somewhere between zero and five dollars to park all day on a Saturday.
-We won't be providing breakfast. There are 7-11s along Harrison at both the Main Street and Grace Street intersections, which are three blocks south and north of the tournament building respectively. If you prefer to sit down and/or eat hot food, the Village Cafe at Harrison and Grace is open for breakfast.

We will be using the same building/rooms for the Sunday event. I'll leave it up to the TDs of that to tell you when to arrive.

I don't know exact details, but I've only been sent the science for one (Shantanu's team) out of five packets teams said they would be writing. If your team is writing a packet and your science questions are done, please send me those questions now.
Matt Weiner wrote:Dwight Wynne and Aaron Cohen will be covering most of the science for this tournament. Some physics assistance could still be quite useful, so holler at Dwight if you want to write that.
Except for the submitted packets, the bio and chem for this tournament are all but done. If you are not playing this tournament and want to write physics, you would still be very useful. If you are not playing this tournament and want to write minor science, especially CS, you would also be very useful. Any little bit helps; even if you can only write like 1/1, that's 1/1 that I don't have to write or find a writer for.

Hey folks.

Good news: The tournament will have 14 packets that will be done before the tournament starts.

Bad news: A team has dropped out and 8 teams really doesn't work for this. If you are in or can get to Richmond and want to play the tournament, I will give you a discount of up to 100% on the entry fee in order to entice you to be here. We can also offer pickup from the train or bus station if that helps. Contact me at [email protected] if this applies to you. OK, I think this situation is now taken care of.

Hey,

If anyone coming to VCU Open is driving through the DC area, it would be convenient if you could pick me up. I'll pay (possibly not with used books) for a ride there and back. If interested, send me an email.

EDIT: I still haven't heard from anyone. Since I can't come to the tournaments this weekend without some sort of ride, I'd really like to know if anyone has room for me.
