Sub Distro within Painting

Post by JackGlerum »

If you were to write a 20/20 packet of only painting, what would the distribution look like? For whatever reason I was thinking about it and couldn't come up with anything that make sense. You could go about it in many different ways, and am curious what people think.

My suggestion for a by-date subdistribution:
3/3 pre-1420
5/5 1420-1600
5/5 1600-1800
6/6 1800-present
1/1 non-western from any period.
I would also suggest a geographical sub-distribution as follows:
Pre-1420
2/2 Mediterranean basin, 1/1 northern, central, and eastern Europe.
1420-1600
2/2 Italian, 2/2 northern Europe, 1/1 your choice.
1600-1800
2/2 Italian, 3/3 northern Europe and Spain.
1800-Present:
3/3 European, 3/3 North American.
This assumes that the difficulty is "high, but not infinite".

I'm wondering how much pre-Renaissance painting there is to justify that subdistribution.

I agree. If it were overall art, 3/3 would be just fine, but with just painting... After all, how many questions can you ask about cave painting a la Lasceaux, Roman wall painting and Egyptian tomb painting?

The 3/3 "Pre-Renaissance" includes mideval painting(as well as illuminated manuscripts and mosaics, which I am counting as paintings) in addition to ancient paintings. That opens up quite a bit of material, at least at higher levels.

As happy as I am to learn I can toss up postwar artists other than Andy Warhol, I must complain that you seem to make no room for shuch amazing luminous fountains as Smithson, Beuys, Baldessari, Walker, Turrell, or even Nauman.

Inquiry, it's probably a stretch to have more than 1 total question on painting technique (like "gouache"), but would one include such an answer in your pre-1700 paintings repertoire in such a packet?

Wow....I hadn't heard the word "gouache" in almost twenty years...I thought it had been replaced by acrylics, or is there currently a gouache-retro movement. Or did you just mean re art history in general?
