KLEE: HI Fine Arts (4/11/09)

Post by Magister Ludi »

This is the formal announcement for this year's HI fine arts doubles tournament KLEE: Dance You Monster to my Soft Song! The tournament will be played Saturday night (4/11) after the completion of the main tournament.

This tournament is written by myself, Shantanu Jha, Aaron Rosenberg, and Guy Tabachnick. I am serving as editor for the tournament. There are ten regular packets with two packets reserved for finals, which are far more difficult. Packets consist of twenty tossups with powers.

The distribution is 30% painting, 30% classical music, 10% opera/ballet, 5% art film, 5% sculpture, 5% architecture, 5% jazz, 10% misc. There are set sub-distributions for time period/movement. There is no sub-distribution dictating the number of questions about artists versus works.

It will cost $15 per player not per team. If you are interested in playing or moderating at this tournament or have any questions about the format please post in this thread. If you are interested in mirroring this tournament please email me at [email protected].

I will definitely play this event, and am probably looking for a musically-inclined teammate.

I will definitely play these fine arts rounds that Saturday night in Cambridge. I look forward to answering more than just the art film question, too. Will rooms be available beyond 7:00 P.M., though?

I will play this, but I am definitely going to need a teammate.
EDIT: per Hannah: Cameron Orth, random pieces of early music (i.e, little knowledge of the post-Saint-Saens/Puccini era), mostly in opera; general visual arts knowledge only

I'm definitely in, and a teammate would be nice indeed.

EDIT: Doug Yetman, competent in classical music, opera, film, rather less competent in the visual arts, dreadful at anything jazz or architecture related.

Suggestion: So that people can find optimal, this thread should maintain a running list of lone players and their strengths. Or, you know, people could just post in this format.

Example: Hannah Kirsch, classical music, esp. modern opera and modern composers

I meant to mention this in my first post, but if someone wants to claim me as their teammate by Monday (I leave Tuesday night and internet access is iffy), then that person gets to pick which of the following I will be reading that week from:
Classical music : a concise history from Gluck to Beethoven / Julian Rushton.
Modern music : a concise history from Debussy to Boulez / Paul Griffiths.
Classic and romantic music : a comprehensive survey / Friedrich Blume ; translated by M.D. Herter Norton.
Renaissance and Baroque music : a comprehensive survey / Friedrich Blume ; translated by M.D. Herter Norton.
I'll do my best to read the entire chosen book, as they are each only around 200 pages long.

Having heard that we don't need staff,

Dale Chihuly > John Adams > Philip Glass > Ballet Mecanique

(seriously: I don't know many things, but I can buzz on paintings that I have seen and on some late clues for opera.)

I could pack four sealed classical CD sampler anthologies which could make prizes for the top two teams. As for my Cambridge parking permit, could I call Andy Thursday evening from the rental counter with that elusive license plate number and drive to Harvard where I could pick it up?

We were kicked out of Sever Hall around 10:30 by security so only four rounds were played. The team of Jonathan Magin and Cameron Orth was declared the winner as it was the only team without a loss. I am hoping that the rest of the set could be played at another time in a formal or informal tournament. I would be happy to run the complete set on the Saturday night of ACF Nationals for people who didnt come to HI or to run an abbreviated version just using the six unheard packets.

Pretty much everyone in the country has not heard at least 6 of its rounds. It seems foolish to post this rather than trying to hold the rest of it at another event.

I definitely understand this, but in the interest for reviewing for Nationals, could somebody send me the rounds played at HI? Just in those (4?) rounds there was some great information that could save me some study time in that week before NSC. Thanks.

Sorry folks, the first four packets are not going to be posted until after PACE. Shantanu and I want to edit the first four packets down to a ten/eleven line cap and are going to fix a few mistakes, so the first four packets will be an accurate representation of the product we intend to deliver in October at Minnesota Open. Unfortunately we don't have the time to do this editing work until after PACE and Gaddis. I'm sorry for people who wanted to use these questions to study for high school nationals, but I would suggest they look at this academic year's ACF tournaments for quality art questions to study. And frankly much of the material in these packets would not be at all helpful in studying for high school questions.

I would definitely remain in the Twin Cities to hear those remaining six rounds. Of course, I would welcome my same teammate, Billy Beyer, from the first four rounds after HI in Cambridge. As for packet postings, I am more than one year behind in studying what I have heard, so I am in no hurry. The HI Klee Fine Arts was called before the fifth and final round of the first round-robin, but undefeated Jonathan Magin would have beaten me anyway.
