Side Event Summer Wrangling

Post by Cheynem »

So we come to this always popular time of the summer when we look at what the schedule has in terms of potential side events. This is just meant to be a list of potential events, with chances for people to say "oh yeah, that event is not happening/has been moved back."

Also, let me know if I missed anything.

Full Tournaments
*Cambridge Open
*NASAT (obviously going to be run as own tournament)
*Super Acronym II (trash)

Side Events Confirmed for Mirrors Already
*Age of Empires (classical/ancient history and stuff, probably at CO)
*CANONEXPANSION (science, HSNCT)
*Fight the Power 2 (hip-hop, probably at HSNCT)
*GOLBEZ (video games, already ran at ICT and will run at HSNCT)
*Imaginary Landscape (audio music, HSNCT)
*Let's Remember Some Guys (sports, I think HSNCT)
*META (basically quizbowl minus science, at least HSNCT)
*RULFO (lit/arts, NSC)
*Scattergories (Will Nediger delights, probably at CO)
*STAR BOWL (sci fi, probably at NSC)

Other Side Events (I do not think these have mirrors set up, but let me know if they do.)
*Look at this Photograph (visual trash)
*Mixtape (popular music)
*The Unanswered Question (20th century fine arts)
*TUPAC (trash music listening)

Events That I Don't Know the Status Of
*STIGMATA (visual film)

Proposed but Delayed Events
*For the U.S.A. and All the Southern Countries (Cheyne film, postponed)

Despite the impressively ludicrous number of events that could be run at HSNCT, we actually have a fairly tame slate of events for this summer, which is good because there are two full tournaments that could potentially be run. The existence of a "Purdue" event that could siphon some of the more trash focused events (maybe even mirror FOGEY, which I didn't mention) helps, but even without that, a "Summer Open" weekend could easily do: Saturday (Summer Open), Sunday (Super ACRONYM) and then drop in a few other events after both tournaments or on Friday.

The most recent iteration of Eyes That Do Not See has been available for mirrors for a few months now, but I don't think it's been mirrored all that many times. Does anyone know if there are any upcoming mirrors? I'd personally really like to play it, and I know I'm not alone in this, so if there aren't many more mirrors planned, it's worth keeping on people's radars as another potential side event for upcoming tournaments.

I know NASAT has been run as a summer open in the past; that should likely be included as an option.

Yeah, NASAT has been run as the summer open set down here in the Sunshine State. Has Super ACRONYM been confirmed for CO or is that still up in the air?

Also worth mentioning that I'm happy to run Lederberg as a shootout at NSC and HSNCT

I'm not aware of any upcoming mirrors, but if anyone wants to do so, let me know this month. Otherwise, I'll probably post it in May. There's also a decent chance I'll do an online mirror before that happens.

I imagine Geo Monstrosity XI will both happen and occupy its traditional late-Friday-night-at-HSNCT slot.

Well since "Summer Open" is not happening in the, well, summer, looks like we should have a full Saturday of a Side Event Weekend to play, well, side events, assuming Super ACRONYM is still happening on Sunday.

Would be great to learn if some of the events listed under "Other Side Events" are happening this summer or not. With Summer Open disappointingly delayed, there's a version of a side event weekend from the "confirmed" list that wouldn't be especially exciting for me. But if most of those "other" events are happening, it could be a weekend of a lot of fun.

If it helps at all with picking out the best time for this - I can commit to having Super ACRONYM ready for the weekend of July 20th, but not any earlier.

MUSES will also be ready by July 20th. MUSES is intended to be able to be run a main event as it is 20 tossups with linked 2 part bonuses with 12 packets.

Oxford Open also exists! It was well received generally, people would have fun playing it.

Are there any plans to run CANONEXPANSION at NSC? I won't be able to make it to HSNCT.

In an effort to make this easier for anyone who has to go through the hell of planning the many, many side events for this summer, I've compiled this single list of every possible event I could find that was announced: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Please lmk if you've found any missing / have updates.

Please note that this spreadsheet will probably become hidden for a brief point b/c I'm using it to plan my own summer open, but it'll be publicly viewable for now.
