New College Contact List

Postby Frater Taciturnus » Mon Jan 30, 2012 1:11 pm

It is my understanding that the NAQT Entering Freshman Contact List is basically no more. As such I have taken the liberty of creating a means to maintain contact between teams and to make it easy to get people in touch with teams at their schools. If you have a team, please fill in this spreadsheet.

The Entering Freshman Contact List still very much exists; 2013 edition here. --JTH

It would probably be wise to either merge this list with Eliza Grames' earlier project or otherwise make sure there aren't discrepancies between the two by beginning with the large amount of data found there.

It would be a cool thing if hsquizbowl could keep a publicly-updatable, always-available list like this in a more permanent place outside the forums, such as the main page. Given that the leadership of many college clubs turns over once a year, it's important to make sure that it gets updated at minimum every summer.

I am adding the relevant data from Eliza's list now and hope that once I have this filled in teams can update/add their own information. This is publicly editable, so any member of the community can add their information if they take over an existing team, or create their own.

Ultimately the goal of the Quizbowl Resource Center Database is to maintain a listing of something like this, but 1) there's nothing wrong with starting a project in the interim and 2) I don't want to speak for Jeffrey Hill when it comes to putting together that phase of the project.

Yes, the database should eventually have an "organizations" component to it, but it may be a while before I get to it. With my full time job during the week and quizbowl tournaments on most weekends, my ability to make progress on the database is effectively limited to the summer. Given how relatively simple this would be to add, there's a good chance the database will be able to collect this information by the end of the summer.

As the school year turns over and people graduate, people should be careful to update this.

It's been a year and there's been some turnover, so I just want to remind everyone that they should update this appropriately. It's a good idea to incorporate contact information for colleges you have contact information for, but that aren't likely to see this.

What's the problem with the NAQT Entering Freshman Contact List? It's been helpful for me in terms of getting in contact with people at other schools.

The Entering Freshman list does exist, yes. This contact information spreadsheet is still extremely useful and should be updated, though.

I had some trouble finding this when I went to start gathering email addresses to invite people to Regionals, so I've stickied it. Please keep your team's info up-to-date and fix anything that may be incorrect so that we can reach out to those who may not check hsqb often.

I used this yesterday to put a friend of a friend in contact with the team at her school, which reminds me to remind you all to please update your information as people graduate this spring. This can be a very useful tool, but only if it's reasonably current.

Is there any meaning behind the bolded and/or italicized schools in the document?

In the past, there was also a list that could be sent to seniors to enter their contact information and schools that would be forwarded to the respective collegiate contacts.

Does something like this still exist? I'd like to forward it to my list of area seniors. I think they'd respond to this slightly better than having to look up a contact.

Are you referring to the Entering Freshmen Contact List from NAQT? From what I can tell, this is still done every year. Jeff Hoppes could tell you more.

If so, drop us a line (hsnct@naqt.com) next week and we'll add that to the contact information collected at HSNCT.

How is the information for the entering freshman contact list collected? I know I got two people last year from this list, and both were thoroughly shocked that I found them. I also see that I was on the list two years ago, and I don't really see how.

The primary source for the entering freshmen contact list is the data collected from HSNCT registrations.
