ANNOUNCEMENT: Sun 'n Fun X Mirror (7/11/09) at Maryland

Postby DumbJaques » Tue May 05, 2009 7:18 pm

The University of Maryland will be mirroring Sun 'n Fun X, to be written by Ahmad Ragab and co., on July 11, 2009. Currently, I believe there will be a literature side event written by Tommy Casalaspi run in the evening following the conclusion of the tournament proper.

EDIT:

We will be running Sun 'n Fun on Saturday, July 11. We will run both Tommy's lit tournamnet (likely singles) and Matt Weiner's Darger tournament on Sunday, July 12. Saturday evening will likely feature some kind of shenanigans/legitimate playing (VETO doubles, Africa Challenge, high school speedcheck bonanza, gladiatorial matches with furniture fragments from the basement of Jimenez, etc).

Fees and stuff:

Base Fee: $120
Buzzer Discount: -$5
Staffer Discount: -$10

For more details, see Ahmad's original post at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7585. Notably, the stated difficulty target for this event is "Nationals," and as of yet there have been no promises made regarding French postmodernist feminist philosophy.

Hey, if some team has room for me (and has already submitted a packet), email me at jsmagin at yahoo dot com, as I'd like to play this surely exciting tournament.

The annoucement says nothing about this being a packet-sub tournament.

Hey, so given that we're now looking at running Matt Weiner's Darger tournament and Tommy's lit event, it makes sense to split this event over two days. I think we'll run the two side events Sunday and finish up early, and run the main tournament Saturday (perhaps followed by some satirical games on the funniest materials we can find). If this seems trip-ruining to anyone, let me know.

I doubt I'm the only one who expected this to be the plan anyway, but I am disappointed (read: surprised at the possibility) that a tournament at UMD will end early enough that we don't have to eat at Plato's Diner. I therefore support the satirical games option. Or, if I feel like killing myself with writing obligations, I might suggest a guerrilla/Emergency-esque tossup-only event that would be short enough to make Saturday a full-length day.

Trips to Plato's are not dependent on the time of day, but I guess you're welcome to try. I highly doubt we'd be able to get a meaningful guerrilla event together in the next few weeks - we'd probably get more out of some amusing games. We can find some old questions from the Maryland archives, run some Africa challenge, revived the Wichita State trash tournament, whatever. I've also heard there are other, more unique possibilities afoot, so we'll see what materializes.

Magin, Mehdi and I are planning on playing this together. There's still one spot open, if anyone's interested.

I don't think the schools assign enough homework.

Hey, make sure to check the edited details of the initial announcement to note that this event is assuredly running as a two-day festival of literary criticism. Sun 'n Fun proper will still take place exclusively on Saturday.

Also, check the field to see if your info is correct - let me know if it's not up to date.

Also, TJ will be bringing two working buzzer sets.

Cool. Could the short-handed teams (Whitman, Dan and Evan, TJ maybe) let me know what your final roster is right now, and if you're likely to be pulling free agents? I'm trying to finalize the field - where we run this will depend on how many final teams we have.

I ultimately won't be able to make this, does anyone have need for a hotel room fri and sat night? Just e-mail me, I got it at an extreme discount so I'm just trying to not lose my shirt while also hooking someone up.
