Open mirror of NAQT HS NCT at UTC 6/21/08

Postby Your Genial Quizmaster » Fri May 09, 2008 1:41 am

Once again this summer, UT-Chattanooga will host a weekend of open tournaments June 21-22. The academic half will be a delayed mirror of the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament on Sat. 6/21/08. (We'll follow that on Sun. 6/22 with Summer Camp, al mirror of Maryland's ASS trash tournament the same weekend -- see Trash forum for details.)

The NAQT mirror is open to all interested players regardless of school level, academic affiliation, or lack thereof. (Yes, that includes coaches too.) The only exception involves high school teams that qualified for the NAQT HS NCT. If you are such a team and for some reason cannot go to the NCT, and you want to attend the NAQT mirror, please contact me. Otherwise, individual players are eligible to form mixed teams or make themselves available as free agents to sign on with other teams. Teams may be up to four players; yes, you can play solo if you wish (see Fees below.)

PRE-REGISTRATION: You don't have to pay or submit rosters till you get there, but you MUST let us know at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com by Thursday night 6/19 if you're coming, and to which tournament(s). After that, we may not be able to fit you into the schedule.

SCHEDULE: We're returning to the friendly confines of Holt Hall (see directions below.) For the NAQT mirror, registration begins in Holt 124 Sat. 6/21 at 9:30 AM EDT [note – not the usual 9:00; hey, it’s summer!] Tournament play will start at 10 AM.

FORMAT & RULES: By popular demand, our mirror will once again be an *untimed* tournament with 20-tossup rounds. With that one exception, we'll follow standard NAQT rules (see <http://www.naqt.com>), though you may have to remind us to give the bonus answers after each part 'cause we're kinda used to the other style. Also, we may or may not split or seed the field by experience, depending on how many teams register and what level they're on. When you pre-register your team, please give me a general idea of who's playing on your team and how much experience they have.

PRIZES: Since the NAQT mirror is an open tournament, we will offer suitable prizes in lieu of trophies for the top teams and individual scorers (probably books, unless another brilliant idea strikes us between now and then.)

FEES: Base fee is $90 per multi-player team or $60 per one-player team. Minimum fee after discounts is $20 per tournament
Buzzer: $5 discount, one per team
Full time official for either day $10 discount

So how do you get to the minimum fee? Start writing. We will give a $20 discount for each round's worth of fresh new questions for UTC's future use -- your choice of high school level academic, college level academic, or trash -- submitted in electronic format by Thurs. 6/19/08. Go ahead and send the questions to utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com, so we can make sure the discount is included in our paperwork.

DIRECTIONS: From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Go past the UTC Arena, after which E. 4th St. becomes part of E. 3rd St. After that, take the second right onto Palmetto St. Go two blocks and turn right onto Vine St. (just past the EMCS Building.) Just before the place where Vine St. is blocked off, the parking lot for Holt is on the right.

* From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I- 24 West; directions from there same as above.

* From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above.

* From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there.

TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR: This may look familiar: Charlie Steinhice will be in charge. But it's better to send e-mail to the team account at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com.

With a little less than two weeks to go, right now we expect nine to ten teams for UTC’s open delayed mirror of the NAQT high school NCT and seven to eight teams for the Summer Camp trash tournament. Both events are open to high school as well as college teams, or for that matter anyone else who wishes to play.

We still have plenty of room if you’re interested in fielding a team, and several of these teams may have room for a free agent or two. If you’re interested in attending either or both tournaments, whether fielding a team or offering your services as a free agent, please let us know at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks.

Here are the teams we currently are expecting:

NAQT HS NCT MIRROR (open academic tournament Sat. 6/21/08)

USF/alums
Ooltewah HS + alums
Chipola CC
Tansey et al.
UTK alums
Alpharetta HS
Georgia Perimeter
UGA
[plus probably a UTC house team]
?Ringgold HS

SUMMER CAMP (open trash tournament Sun. 6/22/08)

USF/alums
Ooltewah HS + alums
Chipola CC
Tansey et al.
Morris & Decker
Kilby et al.
Hendry et al.
?Ringgold HS

What is the schedule format the tournament will follow? How many rounds will we play, and how long is the tournament expected to go?
