The July Crisis: Chicago Open History Doubles

Post by Skepticism and Animal Feed »

So, since other CO side events are coming out of the woodwork, I figure I might too.

I am currently in the process of writing an all-history tournament. Ideally, I'd like this to serve as a side event at Chicago Open, where it has a proud two-year tradition.

This year's event is going to be a bit different from last year's:

-- packets will consist of 16 tossups and 16 bonuses
-- the questions will be a lot more diverse; there will be significant amounts of social history, and I have been experimenting with ways to write questions that are akin to "what historians actually do" while still being clue-dense. There will even be fine arts, social science, R/M, and other tangential subjects where I deem it historically relevant.

If you are likely to play this tournament on CO weekend, please post here and email me at barthur AT jd10 DOT law DOT harvard DOT edu. I need to know what level of interest there is, as do the people running CO weekend.

The Entry Fee will be $20 per team. Unfortunately, due to how low the entry fee already is, I cannot offer a buzzer or moderator discount. If you have special needs and cannot afford the entry fee, contact me and perhaps we can work something out.

EDIT: According to Seth Teitler's Post here, this tournament is tentatively scheduled for FRIDAY, JULY 18 (the 99th birthday of Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko) from 6 PM to Midnight. I can only hope that this does not interfere with anyone's pre-existing plans to celebrate Uruguayan Constitution Day. I do plan on starting as close to 6 PM as possible; since there are bonuses, this tournament will necessarily have to run efficiently.

I'd play this again. It was a lot of fun last year, and I and whoever I play with probably stand less of a chance of going winless. So I'm definitely on board.

I have been a part of that proud two year tradition, and I look forward to rekindling that ritual. I like the inclusions of bonuses as well.

I'd love to play, even though there stands a good chance of me going winless.

Edit: Oh yea, I need a teammate. I'm not really good or bad at history, not very much deep knowledge, but I have a tendency to get random buzzes that I don't expect.

I would play or staff - decent speed, good-bordering-on-great pronunciation, mediocre-bordering-on-bad history knowledge.

I'm interested in playing in this tournament, but due to my rather mediocre history knowledge, I'm also willing to read if there is a shortage of moderators.

If there's an abundance of moderators, I'll play, but since I really suck at history, I could read if needed, assuming people could stand my horrible pronunciations of foreign words.

I definitely plan to compete in history doubles the evening before the main Chicago Open. If Tim Hartman is still in the Chicago area, I would like to have him as my history doubles partner. I hope to apply successfully for social studies certification and a history endorsement in a couple of years. The better variety of questions sounds intriguing. Last summer, there were sometimes three consecutive toss-ups on battles.

If you find out you won't be able to play, I hope you don't mind me bringing you on board as a consultant of sorts. It would be useful to have somebody who has actually done history in an academic setting, which I never have.

This is great. So far 28 people have expressed interest, which would mean 14 teams. I really hope we will have enough rooms and moderators to support so large a tournament.

(And enough packets too...right now I am planning to write 14 packets, but don't worry. If we need more I can always bring more writers on board)

I now realize that I had already entered the History Doubles. Tim Hartman was great as my teammate last summer, but he may be locked out due to a lack of a posting if the field is capped at 28 players (14 duos). Any interested teammate who is also already entered may e-mail me at [email protected] or [email protected]

UPDATE:

(1) There are currently 29 people signed up. I am going to go ahead and cap the field at 15 teams; this number is most convenient for me. If you sign up after the 30-person cap has been hit, I will put you on the waiting list; worry not, everyone on last year's waiting list got to play in the tournament due to late drop-outs.

(2) I will be writing 14 packets for this tournament; 13 for use in the regular rounds, and then a finals packet of Westbrookian difficulty that will be used in case of a tie.

(3) The Tournament Beings Promptly at 5:00 PM. Please be there at 5 PM. This does not mean "leave your hotel at 5 PM", this means be in Cobb at 5:00 PM.

(4) If you have picked a teammate, PLEASE EMAIL ME with your team. My address is barthur AT jd10 DOT law DOT harvard DOT edu. This will also let me build an email contact list that I can use to mass-email announcements without spamming this board.

Thank you.

Selene and I want to sign up as a team. Is 15 teams actually more convenient than, say, an even number of teams? If it winds up being a hassle, we can drop out and read. In the meantime, I guess you can put us on the waiting list.

Well the advantage of 15 teams to me is that with a bye, I have two additional moderators. Perhaps the tournament beings can fill that role, though?
