Cal's Mid-Spring Tournament @ UMD (3/3/18)

Post by wcheng »

I am happy to announce that I will be directing Maryland's mirror of Cal's Mid-Spring Tournament, this year's Nationals-minus spring open, which will be held on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018.

We are going to have a soft cap at 12 teams that is subject to change based on interest in playing our tournament.

Location and Schedule
The tournament will take place in Jimenez Hall on the University of Maryland campus.

Fees
Base Fee: $150
$10 discount per working buzzer
$30 discount per competent moderator
$50 discount if all members of the team attend the same institution

All checks should be made out to "Maryland Academic Quiz Team."

Registration
If you are interested in attending our tournament, please send an email to me at [email protected] with the number of teams, working buzzers, experienced staffers, and number of staffer laptops that you will be bringing to our tournament. Please provide a team contact with their cellphone number.

To facilitate the formation of open teams, I have created a spreadsheet to facilitate matchmaking. Once the team has formed, a member should send me an email to confirm their registration.

Side Events
We are planning to host Will Nediger's side event Scattergories 2 after the tournament. The fee per person will be $15. You can register ahead of time on this spreadsheet.

EDIT: Playing with Columbia Aedit2

EDIT 2: Not anymore. Looking for team again.

Looking for teammates for Scattergories.

EDIT2: as an NYC site is in fact happening, I will be going to that one.

I'm interested in this, assuming there's no NYC/adjacent site.

As always I offer questionable lit buzzes, fraudulent music knowledge, and "ChinaStuff"TM. Let me know if this sounds useful.

edit: very interested in scattergories as well.

I noticed that there are some teams formed on the spreadsheet, but I haven't yet received any emails from them yet. Just a reminder that if you are signing up an open team, you should email me to officially register for the tournament.

There are currently 3 teams registered in the OP and two formed on the spreadsheet. Does that mean there are currently 5 teams planning to play this tournament? (I don't know who UMBC is)

Also, Virginia is not able to play this as a full team, so I (and probably Vasa?) are looking to join an open team if anyone has a slot or two available.

Edit: Vasa and I will be playing with Dos Remedios and Rein.

My bad on that; I've emailed Weijia to register.

Matt, Sam, and I are looking for a fourth - a reasonably strong lit player would probably be ideal.

The only teams that are listed in the OP are the ones that have actually sent me emails to register themselves. UMBC is the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, by the way.

Some Canadians are considering making the trip down for this. I'll let you know once we get all our ducks in a row.

WUSTL is attending this mirror; we've already sent a registration email.

We hope to see more teams sign up!

I am intending to finalize the schedules this weekend, so if any teams are still on the fence about registering, please send me an email by this Friday night. I look forward to seeing all of you on March 3!

Now that the tournament is a week away, I am closing registration. The final field will consist of the nine teams listed in the OP and a house team. I will be sending out a logistics email to all of the teams sometime tonight or tomorrow.

Our team (Aaron, Rein, me) has an open spot after our fourth player dropped. Contact one of us if interested. Playing shorthanded isn't fun.

Edit: Seth Ebner has joined us.

My thanks to all of the staffers and players who have come from near and far to UMD's mirror of CMST! We had a great tournament, with Brownstein et al. finishing two games ahead of "Bloq Mayus" and OSU at the end of the prelims, hence winning the tournament outright. Playoff and combined stats are posted. I apologize for the delay since I was tied up with moderating Scattergories at the end of the day. If you notice any statkeeping issues, please let me know. As both a tournament director and an editor for the set, I hope that you had a great time and am open to any thoughts or suggestions you have about future Maryland tournaments or my category (religion) in the set.

A big thanks to Weijia for organizing this tournament and to all the staffers too for powering through an extremely long day even though they looked positively exhausted by the end of it.

We had a lot of fun and would definitely come to UMD for qb again should we should our paths cross in the future!
