Cambridge Open 2017 (CamO)

Post by Ewan MacAulay »

I've already mentioned this in the "Scheduling Reform" part of the forums but posting here to improve visibility.

Cambridge University Quiz Society have finished the 2017 Cambridge Open set. The set was generally well-received at the UK mirror ("Magnificently quirky" - Ben Salter, 2017), and we've been working to improve the set since then.

We're hoping to open the set up to being mirrored in the US and Canada over the spring and summer. At the moment, however, there are bits of the distribution which will require some adaptation if they're to play well across the pond. It'd be great if a team could be formed to Americanise the set - we can work out a cut of the mirror fees as compensation.

The set is slightly harder than last year's Missouri Open or SCT, probably on the order of this year's Penn Bowl. It consists of 14 packets of 24/24, with tossups powermarked and soft-capped at 5 lines.

(1/1) British Literature
(1/1) American Literature
(1/1) European Literature
(1/1) World + Other (including multi-area common links) Literature
(1/1) British History
(1/1) European History
(1/1) Anglosphere (Including American) History
(1/1) World + Ancient History
(1/1) Biology
(1/1) Chemistry
(1/1) Physics
(1/1) Other Science
(1/1) Painting
(1/1) Classical Music
(1/1) Other Fine Arts
(1/1) Mythology
(1/1) Religion
(1/1) Philosophy
(1/1) Social Science
(1/1) Modern World & Current Events
(1/1) Geography
(1/1) Trash
(1/1) Mixed and Other (Including GK)
(1/1) Extra Lit / Hist / Biology/ OArts (distributed equally between the four)

We're hoping to charge £25 per team as a mirror fee.

Any other questions, post 'em on here or drop me a line at the e-mail address on my profile.

The general opinion of those who played CamO was that this set was very good. Without wishing to diminish the achievements of any other prior tournament, I think that quite a few people would view it as the best British tournament set yet written. It was inventive and fun, with a lot of attention paid to balance, and questions that played well. It was also refreshing to get a newly written tournament in an NAQT style.

I would recommend its being played "as is" at US mirrors, if anyone is interested to do so. We have had reports in two years now of flawed attempts at Americanisation of OOT; why not take a British set and just play it, cricket questions and all, just as Brits have done often with US sets?

This sounds like great fun. I'd love to have this run as a summer open.

I'm always in favour of doing it this way.

To my knowledge, all the planned mirrors of CamO have now been completed.

If you were planning on holding another mirror, please drop me a line as soon as possible with details, otherwise we'll clear the set this week, set up a discussion thread, and properly get some handbags out.

Thanks to everyone who played and helped to mirror this set - hope y'all enjoyed it.

Just a heads up that there's very active discussion about possibility using this set (among others) for the various summer events, so could any release of this set wait until the Illinois and Boston events have confirmed what sets they're using? Thanks!

I think you're posting in the wrong thread - we should use the most recent Cambridge open set

Yeah, this has already been rectified over email. Although, I must then double the request for 2017's set to be posted on the archives.
