MLK at Columbia University - February 20, 2016

Post by Urech hydantoin synthesis »

The Columbia University Quiz Bowl team is pleased announce that we will be running the Northeast mirror of MLK VII on Saturday, February 20, 2016.

Tournament format: Morning check-in for this tournament will run from 8:00 to 8:30 AM. The introductory meeting will then follow, and the first round will start as soon as possible afterwards. The preliminary field cap is 12, with a very good chance of expanding to 18 or higher.

Registration: To register teams for this tournament, please email [email protected] with the following information:
- School name.
- The contact number of someone who will be present at the tournament.
- Number of teams you are registering for this tournament.
- Any discounts you will be claiming, such for providing buzzers and staff.

Tournament fees and discounts:

The base fee is $125/team.
All schools are eligible for a $5 discount for each buzzer system, and a $20 discount for each reader or scorekeeper they lodge or provide transportation for. We will award discounts for staffers at our discretion.

All registration fees must be paid either in advance or during morning check-in. If you are paying by check, please make it payable to "Columbia University," with "Quiz Bowl" on the memo line. We will also accept cash on the day of the tournament. We will not accept any other payment than cash or check. If you are mailing a check in advance, we recommend that it be no later than two weeks before the tournament, and the check should be sent to:

For those interested (and whose travel plans can accommodate it), I've gotten the go-ahead from Ben and Eliza to try to run a mirror of BUTT after MLK wraps up. Eliza tells me there are eight rounds, so if we get five teams we can do a double round-robin, with teams staffing during their bye rounds (or just a single round-robin if people have to leave). If that doesn't come to pass, we'll work out some other schedule, and maybe switch to a singles or doubles format.

I've created a spreadsheet that people should make use of in forming teams. It'll be how I keep track of how many teams we have, so please do sign up there.

EDIT: I had to replace the original spreadsheet because apparently Columbia's Google Drive doesn't let one create spreadsheets accessible without a Columbia email. The new one is just regular Gmail.

EDIT 2: If it wasn't clear, this mirror will use the fee structure described in the BUTT announcement: $25 per team, or $8 per player if we switch to singles or doubles.

By the way, Penn is back to two teams if you can add it to the field.

Just thought people should know that now MLK will be held at NYU but Columbia University will still be the official "host".
