=====Original Announcement=====

Hi quizbowl,

This is the official announcement for ACF Fall 2014. The tournament will be happening the weekend of 11/8/2014.

This time is different

Over the last few years, there has been some desire to see the packet submission system changed. Particularly, we've seen that many teams who submit full packets never see their questions make it to the final set. We would like to see some change on that front.

What exactly is different?
There are 3 things that are different:
  • Full packets are optional. You will only be required to submit half-packets.
The editors will tell you what distribution your submissions should adhere to. We'll have a clear picture on how this will work pretty soon.
The discount/penalty schedule is slightly different pursuant to the half-packet requirement.
That's it.

I have questions about this new initiative. Who do I contact?

Send emails to [email protected] with any questions. We will be putting up an FAQ on this thread and on the website in the near future.

If you would prefer a public forum, please see this thread in the Collegiate Discussion section.

Other details

Editors
Gautam and Gaurav Kandlikar will be overseeing the production of the set.

Most of the editing will be done by Jordan Brownstein of the University of Maryland, Jacob Reed of Yale, Max Schindler of UChicago, Richard Yu of WUStL, and Ben Zhang of Columbia University.

Hosting

Hosts finalized: see the top of this post for host announcements.

We are currently soliciting hosts for all the above regions. Hosting is a good way to raise money and get newer members of your club exposed to well-written, accessible quizbowl questions. If you are interested in hosting, shoot us an email me at [email protected].

Packet Submission
Any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2013 is required to submit a packet. High school players are included in this definition and are subject to the same discounts and penalties as college teams.

Please reference this flowchart for the packet-submission guidelines. The links in the diagram are clickable. If Lucidchart is not working for you, please use this link instead. If you have questions on the submission guidelines, email them to [email protected] and we'll clarify.

Please submit packets to [email protected] and use “ACF Fall 2014: [Team Name]” in the subject line.

Submission schedule
Please refer to the below submission schedule:
Image

Fees:

Base fee: $120 for one team from a school, $240 for two teams from a school, etc.
Buzzer systems*: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each No maximum.
Laptop: -$5 each Maximum 1 per team.
Travel: -$10 per 200 miles traveled one way
International**: -$20
New to ACF teams***: -$25
New quizbowl teams****: -$75

* No discount for broken buzzers; no maximum.
** For teams representing schools located in a different country than the tournament host.
*** For schools which haven't played an ACF tournament between September 2012 and August 2014, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school.
**** For schools which did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament since September 2012, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school. May be combined with new ACF team discount for a total new-team discount of $100.

Packet Penalties
We have clear guidelines on what your submissions can or cannot be, with information on penalties for flouting the guidelines. Please follow them. We will enforce penalties.

Friendly Reminders

Please follow the processes and guidelines laid out by the editors and ACF.
Don't talk about your submitted questions with anyone else until the editors tell you it's okay.
Please follow past iterations of ACF Fall, eg. the 2008, 2009, 2012 versions, for an idea of what your submissions should be like.
If you think a particular topic you want to write on is too hard, it probably is. Write on something easier.

If you have any other questions, please give us a holler at [email protected].

Ciao

Update 1: please send emails to [email protected]
Update 2: Link to flowchart on the packet submission process has been added.
Update 3: Host information and registration form has been added.
Update 4: Alternative link to lucidchart added.
Update 5: Added University of Alabama to the list of mirrors.

FAQs:

1. How does packet submission work with the new half-packet requirements?
Please reference the original announcement (first post in this thread) and this flowchart for the packet-submission guidelines. If Lucidchart is not working for you, please use this link instead.

2. My team would like to bid for hosting ACF Fall 2014. Are you open to more mirrors besides the "regions" you advertised?
Absolutely. If we think geography or density of teams warrants mirrors besides the "regions" we advertised above, we are certainly interested in seeing those extra mirrors materialize. Just make sure to make a note of it in the your bidding email.

3. When I write questions, do I need to cite my sources? If so, how?
1. You don't need to cite each and every clue. If you are sourcing clues from general encyclopediae like Britannica, don't even bother.
2. There are things you can do to cite within the question. e.g If you are sourcing a clue from Herodotus, you can say "According to Herodotus..." or, if it is Book IV of the Aeneid, you can say "According to Book IV of the Aeneid"
3. Don't bother including footnotes. They are difficult to work with. Just select the text, and add a comment to it. It's easier for us to work with things that way.

Update: 7/5/14 - Added FAQ #2.
Update: 8/20/14 - Added FAQ #3.

I don't want to clog up the announcements thread with my complaints, but if anyone's interested, I have enumerated them in a separate post in the "discussion" forum. I think this plan is well-intentioned but has some problems. It's here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =9&t=16036

ACF has determined that the Early Autumn Collegiate Novice tournament does not count as a "regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament" for the purposes of either of these rules.

Hi everyone,

If you plan to submit a bid to host a mirror of this tournament, please email us at [email protected] by Saturday, August 9th. Bids will be evaluated as they arrive, and we reserve the right to award bids before the deadline. If you would like to bid, we encourage you to do so sooner rather than later -- at the very least, drop us a line ASAP indicating your intent to submit bid.

We hope to have most sites lined up by mid-August.

Thanks.

EDITED to include more info.

This is a reminder that teams that wish to submit half-packets must first register on the form Jerry posted, and email us for a half-packet distribution to write to. We will do our best to respond to all registrations within 24 hours, but Gautam is traveling internationally and I am moving across the country this week, so send us another email if we don't get back to you within a day.

Hosts, please remember to have your site announcements up by this Friday, 22 August.

There's been some confusion about this recently, so here's a reminder about what fees/discounts do and don't apply to higschool teams:

Apply to Highschool teams
Base fee: $120 for one team from a school, $240 for two teams from a school, etc.
Buzzer systems*: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each No maximum.
Laptop: -$5 each Maximum 1 per team.
Travel: -$10 per 200 miles traveled one way
International**: -$20
* No discount for broken buzzers; no maximum.
** For teams representing schools located in a different country than the tournament host.

The packet submission discount according to the schedule laid out in Gautam's post at the top also applies to HS teams. HS teams are also eligible for other packet-related penalties and discounts (e.g. perfectly formatted packet discount, prohibited question type penalty). Of course, the packet submission requirements for highschool teams are identical to those for collegiate teams:
ACF Rules wrote: Any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament (either as a college student or as a high school student) prior to September 1, 2013 is required to submit a packet in order to participate in an ACF tournament in 2014-2015.
-------------
Do NOT apply to Highschool team
-New to ACF teams: -$25
-New quizbowl teams: -$75
-Shorthanded/financial duress discount

If you have any questions about eligibility, discounts, etc. feel free to use the comment box on the registration form or send us an email at [email protected].

This is a reminder that the first packet submission deadline is exactly two weeks away (14 September 2014). We have already received one full packet and two half packets, have given out 23 additional half packet assignments, and have been promised 11 full packets. Keep the registrations coming!

Quizbowlers,

We have just sent out an update email to all the teams that have registered so far. If you have not received this email, please contact us at [email protected] posthaste.

We now have 85 teams registered. We would love to see that number head north. Keep the registrations coming!

Also a friendly reminder that we are less than 100 hours away for the packet submission deadline. 11:59 PM Pacific time on Sunday, September 14 is a hard deadline, and this is non-negotiable. All the teams that have registered have been notified about this. If we receive packets on Sept 15, then they will only be considered for the Sept 28 deadline. Please plan your submissions accordingly.

Another friendly reminder that the first packet submission deadline is at 11.59 PM Pacific Time, tonight (14 September). We'd love to receive a few more submissions before then.

The New England site has already hit its field cap and there are 9 teams on the wait list with another 2 expressing interest, almost 2 months out from the tournament. Is there any possibility of getting a second New England site to accommodate these 11 teams?

This is a reminder that the second packet submission deadline is coming up in 5 days. Only packets that are in our inbox by 11.59pm PST on Sunday, 28 September, will be considered for this deadline.

A couple of things to keep in mind as you finish up your submission:
1. Make sure you follow the Half-packet distribution we have assigned you (unless you're writing a full-packet).
2. Follow the ACF Formatting guidelines (link).
If your submission strays far from these guidelines, we will return it to you and ask that you re-send us a well formatted submission. We've had to do this several times already. These are the most common offenses:
  • a. Don't randomize your submission.
    b. Group questions by category. That is, 5 lit tossups, then 5 lit bonuses; then 5/5 of history, then 5/5 of science, ...
    c. Don't number your questions.
    d. Write in TNR, size 10, 1 inch margins.
If you'd like to see an example of a well-formatted submission, drop us a line.
3. Include your team name and the names of all players who wrote questions for the packet at the top of your submission. E.g.

A quick update:

We have been notified that the TQBA is no longer able to host the Houston-area mirror of ACF Fall.

We are in talks with Texas-area folks to get a mirror lined up. We hope to announce details in the next 5 days.

Please bear with us. We apologize for the inconvenience this is going to cause teams. If this adversely affects you, please email us at [email protected]

As Gautam indicated, this past week TQBA had to cancel its previously planned mirror of ACF Fall in Houston. Unfortunately we were unable to find enough staff members to sustain the event. We hope that with four weeks before the scheduled event, some group from Houston or Austin will be able to step in and host the event.

I want to take this opportunity to apologize to ACF, its fall editing team, and all the college and high school squads who wish play the event. I wish circumstances had worked out differently.

We are pleased to announce that Arnav and folks from UT Austin, with generous support from the LASA team, will be hosting the ACF Fall mirror.

We thank everyone for the quick turnaround in getting the new mirror setup. We hope that teams planning on attending the Houston mirror will be able to adjust their plans and make it to Austin instead.

The list of packets received before last night's deadline has been updated in the third post of this thread. Every team that submitted a packet should also have received an email from us. Email us again if you didn't.

This is a reminder that the $20 penalty deadline is coming up tonight at 11.59 PM PST. Please get your submission in ASAP.

EDIT: Please remember that if you submit a packet with missing questions or with major formatting issues, we will ask you to resubmit and only consider your complete packet for penalty purposes. Refer to the sample packet we have sent out for formatting guidelines, and email us with specific questions.

Hi quizbowl-

We have yet to see some programs with strong quizbowl traditions sign up for playing ACF Fall. We'd love to have you play. Please sign up soon! Many sites are reaching capacity with the number of teams they can host.

We had not gotten around to updating it. It is up now.

Suffice it to say that if we sent you a reply with confirmation that we received your packet, then we have your discounts applied correctly in our spreadsheet tracker. It just takes some time for us to translate that into updating the packet tracking post here.

Sorry about that.

If you haven't submitted packets for ACF Fall '14, your chance to submit them before the $50 deadline ends in a few hours.

When do you announce which packets will be used at the tournaments?

As is customary for any packet sub tournament, teams who are playing will know the morning of the tournament.

Hi quizbowlers-

ACF Fall is only 4 days away. We're still looking at 200+ teams participating - this is huge! On behalf of our editing team and ACF, we'd like to thank everyone for committing to attend this year's Fall; we're sure you'll love it.

A couple of quick things - please be sure to thank the folks who submitted the questions; if you wrote questions for submissions, give yourself a pat on the back! We can't thank you enough for all the stuff you sent our way. The quality of the questions we got was vastly better than what we had worked on in '08, '09, and '12. So kudos to everyone for that.

Also, if you will get a chance to meet one of the editors this weekend (Jordan from Maryland, Jacob from Yale, Max from UChicago, Richard from Wash U in StL, Ben from Columbia), please be sure to thank them as well. If you can't meet them personally, then send them a message over Facebook or email. They have put in a lot of hard work into polishing the set. I'm confident that you'll have a good time playing this set.

Thanks,
Los dos Kandlikars
