Bruce Arthur's Wild Kingdom at Minnesota Open (11/20/2010)

Post by Skepticism and Animal Feed »

This is an announcement for Bruce Arthur's Wild Kingdom, a novelty subject tournament where all the questions are about animals.

The tournament will adhere to the following per-packet distribution:

3/0 Mammals
2/0 Birds
2/0 Reptiles and Amphibians
2/0 Fish
2/0 Invertebrates
2/0 Natural History (extinct beasts, geologic periods)
2/0 Mythical Animals
2/0 Other Academic (Literature, Social Science, Art, etc.)
1/0 Meta
2/0 Trash

I expect there to be 5 packets of 20 questions each.

The tournament should be complete by November or December of 2010. I am open to mirror it at a single location (such as TIT or IO) or at multiple events (such as one HS tournament and one college tournament). Please contact me if you are interested in hosting this event.

I would have preferred Bruce Arthur's Wild RMPFest where the questions are animals, RMP, or even better, both.

The distribution has been tweaked. There will now be trash, meta, mythology, and an "Other Academic" category, which should make the tournament more accessible to people who don't necessarily spend their free time reading the "tapir" article on Wikipedia.

Also, if you can't or don't want to play this tournament, but are interested in writing tossups about animals from literature or video games, please contact me ASAP.

I have made scoresheets for both the shootout and quads formats. Barring a travel disaster and/or my death or maiming, I will be the TD for the Minnesota site and am leaning towards a shootout. But hosts can pick the format that works best for their site.

An update:

93 out of 100 tossups are written; the remaining 7/0 is exclusively in the 2/0 Invertebrate distribution. If people want to send me freelance tossups about invertebrates in the next few hours, that would be wonderful.

I'm leaving for the airport (to fly to MSP) at about 6 PM ET, so it should be finished sometime before then. I'll email it to Chris Ray and Mik Larsen at that time. I will also email a copy to Fred Morlan; his task will be to provide the set to the Minnesota location in the event that I am killed in transit to MO.

This was pretty enjoyable. While it had some quirks that one could suspect seeing its author, every round had a few really neat questions. The vagaries of the distribution resulted in some...questionable...choices at times, but I had a good time.

So this set got kind of weird at times, but there were a fair number of interesting questions and overall it was great fun.
