Here are some more videos:

A rare view of a South Dakota competition, as what they call quiz bowl is much different than what you've seen. There's three teams, all sitting at round tables, with a moderator at the front.

Here is a video of a LA team, Menard, winning a regional competition, and a local TV station interviews them:

http://www.cenlamedia.com/alb/index.php ... mpetition/

Here is a video of the WCTE, Cookeville, TN, TV competition. All 19 games of the compeition are online. Cookeville, who was a powerhouse early this decade, is in the competition. Here is the link for Game 1, Upperman vs. Jackson County.

Upperman BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES

What was the deal with that South Dakota video? It seemed like they were using the video to promote the internet service, and only stuck around for one dead tossup.

I could not get the California one to work.

This year's championship game for Idaho's INL Science Bowl:

http://idahoptv.org/asxgen.cfm?showfile ... 009_hi.wmv
(This just happened on Wednesday and was aired yesterday.)

Also, I ran across this:
http://mathjeopardyfan.blip.tv/#1895588
(For some reason, when I go to this, it keeps defaulting to the most recent clip of the 3, which is the end. You'll have to click on the first 8 minutes to catch it from the beginning.)

It's a series of questions and answers, but it's math and just math. I don't know if it counts. Calculus Quiz Bowl! Questions about calculating series, integrals, and so on.

Wow, those questions are pretty bad, William. "I acknowledge you," not said at any other tournament. What a game, 130-130 tie. Then, the moderator asks for the final score. If this was a real NAQT game, there would be a huge excitement for a tie game, but here, it is just, huh?

The middle school questions are worse, and how do Elvis Presley and FDR relate to a bonus question?

I guess this might as well be the thread for posting videos of collegiate qb. I recorded some Brown games vs. various opponents at http://www.viddler.com/explore/grapesmoker/videos/. So far there are only two but there will probably be more soon.

This is a league championship match. There is no such thing as a "district championship" in OAC play.

EDIT: Also, since when did anyone go through two OAC packets and call it "halves" of one game?

I'm sorry.

Since you can't buzz in early, did you practice the all-important quizbowl skill of hitting the buzzer at the same time the staffer unlocks the system? It seems like that is the only skill "The Challenge" actually tests.

(I'm also curious about whether you could hold down the button until the system activated, or whether there was an automatic lockout for those who pre-empted the reset of the system, like on "Jeopardy!")

If you buzzed in before the little green light went on you were locked out of the question completely. The only solace was you were able to confer before buzzing in on the tossups, so if you were locked out a teammate could pick you up. I still remember the loud "Thump" of a true buzzer race between 8 players trying to buzz in at the right time on about every question. It also happened that my buzzer was broken. So as a result we were statistically less likely to buzz in on a question. They had to wait until commercial break to fix it, which left 2 minutes of working buzzer.

From Oregon, it's High-Five Challenge, the b*****dized version of Jeopardy! where teams from Washington and Oregon compete against each other. This match features two Boy Scout troops facing off.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf6Y0KDVRdc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01dd22I6ILk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk145quMAZc

Just like Jeopardy!, the questions (arranged in categories of 5 with point values varying based on "difficulty") are horrible* for quizbowl standards and don't actually test any knowledge pertaining to the answers' importance. Also, players get to test the important quizbowl ability of pressing a button as soon as some staffer activates the buzzer system, since they cannot buzz in before the reading of the question is finished. Wrong answers deduct points, and the first player to signal gets the chance to answer, unless the "Wild Card" player from the other team buzzes in.

*Actual question from the show (part 2, 9:04):
CATEGORY: BOOKS
QUESTION: The editors of The World Almanac selected two books to be included in a time capsule representing the year 2005. One was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. This was the other.
ANSWER: The World Almanac

From what I've read, the Wild Cards can only buzz three times per half, and a wrong answer by the wild card costs double the point value of the question. Further, the wild card changes at the half.

I can't verify this last point for sure, but I would guess that the wild cards can only buzz if a regular player from the other team has signalled first. Again, I may be wrong on this, but it would preclude the possibility of a tie.

Also, I just found this info about the questions' source:
For all of its up-to-date attraction, High Five follows the patterns of old college bowl shows. Questions, purchased from a Colorado company with a database of 100,000 questions compiled over the past 30 years, are often so tough that Faligowski finds himself wondering how anyone could know the answers.
(Source: http://www.allbusiness.com/north-americ ... 145-1.html)

From the Great Auk's homepage:
Academic Hallmarks
P.O. Box 998
Durango, CO 81302

So it's no surprise that the questions in the clip were auk-tastic.

I didn't know Nashville had their own show. I've never heard of Pope John Paul II in any quiz bowl competition, except for maybe Ezell-Harding.

This doesn't represent NAQT, as MLK (one of the top teams in the nation) lost by 140 points to the Webb School on the first week of the show.

I didn't catch the premiere, but I'll bet you a nickel that they got screwed in the lightning round* at the end of the show.

Are you still on the JIHS Academic team, for 2009-2010?

Well, I am truly 50/50 right now. I might go to all the tournaments, or I might go to just a few. Our team has changed out, with our two seniors leaving, and we have a bunch of people moving in, four juniors, and several sophomores.

They cut our budget a lot, like other schools, and we might not go to as many tournaments. Hopefully, we can make it to your tournament.
