Monetizing my Madness: a PACE Fundraiser

Post by AKKOLADE »

Hi everyone,

I was thinking about my effort to track how much work I put into HSQBRank and thought of a way that it could be beneficial to the community, rather than a way to whine and/or mock myself.

What I'm asking you to do is make a pledge on a per-hour basis to PACE's Outreach Fund. For each hour I work on the rankings, you make a donation. Since I've been a poor college student/graduate before, I really don't care how much you pledge (though we probably should agree that a penny per hour is a reasonable minimum).

I've never really tracked how much time I put in a year for the rankings. If I had to guess, I'd say that I spend about 100 hours annually, give or take. I have no idea how accurate this is, though.

And if you don't trust my estimation abilities, feel free to commit to a flat amount, either as a fail safe or else as an alternative to a per-hour basis

I'll post a public list of everyone who's pledged. If you'd prefer to stay anonymous, you can do so.

It'll be each individual's responsibility to make good on their donation at the end of the year. If you fail to donate what you pledged, I won't refrain from shaming you.

To sign up, post in this thread or email me at [email protected].

Edit: as a reminder: PACE is a 501(c)(3)! Your donations are tax deductible!

Just so people get a sense of what the PACE Outreach fund does, here is what we paid for last year:
* mailings in Pennsylvania letting teams know about tournaments and good quizbowl
* lunch at a Tennessee tournament so that there could be a discussion about quizbowl during that time
* flyers in Northern California informing teams about tournaments
* moderator travel to a Pennsylvania tournament that had several inexperienced teams
* co-TD travel to a tournament in New Mexico
* promotional video that will be released soon
* quizbowl awards in Pennsylvania

In 2014-15, we paid people to enter questions into Quinterest.

Keep in mind that in addition to being something to support, the PACE Outreach Fund is something that can help you do outreach. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to either contact me at [email protected] or contact Victor Prieto. If money is preventing you from reaching out to more teams, let's talk.

Thanks a ton to Fred for doing this, and thanks to everybody who pitches in. We'll be happy to thank you formally when you pay so that you can use the tax deduction.

I'm really excited to say we've already surpassed $600! And I've been asleep for probably more than half of the time period since I first posted about this!

Thank you to all of our generous contributors. We'd greatly appreciate any more support anyone would be willing to provide!

With a new update published in the rankings, now's a good time to remind everyone we're still taking donations!

As you close in on your final rankings, do you have an estimate for how many hours you've worked on the rankings this year?

I've been maintaining a count in the first post of the main HSQBRank thread. I think I'll end up around 90 hours, give or take.

I'm now finished with the 2016-17 edition of HSQBRank.

Per my calculations, with 98 hours of work put in, that should come to a current total of $2379 raised for PACE's Outreach Fund.

I'd like to take this time to thank everyone that has donated for their kindness and support in growing the game we all love.

I'd like to conduct one last effort for donations. If you're interested in donating to this at all, please contact me either via email ([email protected]) or any of the myriad of social media profiles for HSQBRank.
