College Player v. World

Post by Dantooine is Big! »

So in the past, I've held some online quizbowl matches (via google hangouts) where one well reputed college QB player plays solo against however many high school quizbowl players respond to my facebook messages asking them if they want to play qb. Past players include Adam Fine (who lost 325 to 425), Ben Zhang (who lost 320 to 345), Dylan Minarik (who lost 195 to 425), and Isaac Kirk-Davidoff (who lost 115 to 545). I usually read college novice level packets to make the game fair for both sides of the game - stuff like MUT, PACE, etc. I obviously don't read packets anyone in the rooms say they've played, though I trust the players to be up front about that.

I'm holding one of these games this Friday (probably around 8 PM central time, after the college player v. world match there will be random scrimmages in the room that I'll read) and I'd love to get a college player onboard to play, so if anyone wants to play solo against an army of HS qb players, leave a message here or PM me. I'll also be posting the google hangout links in this thread, so HS players, feel free to come and play.

So far, I have interest to be the college player in question from Will Alston, Jeff Xie, and Ryan Bilger. At 9 PM central time, I'll post a google hangouts link here, and whoever wants to play can join. We'll decide who's playing at that time by whoever joins first, basically.

Tonight's games pitted one college qb player against… mostly other college qb players, due to a lack of hs qb players to be in the "world."

Game 1: Will Alston vs. Jeff Xie, Kyle Doney, Matthew Lehmann, Hidehiro Anto, and Ryan Bilger: score of 205 to 410, the World is victorious

Game 2: Ryan Bilger vs. Jeff Xie, Kyle Doney, Matthew Lehmann, Hidehiro Anto, "Rohin Devanathan and John Xiang" (so they say, the names in the google hangout room were… strange?), and Kai Smith: 210 to 285, the World is victorious

Stars of the show:

Ryan Bilger, 77.5ppg
Matt Lehmann, 50ppg
Hidehiro Anto, 45ppg (won't count his 2nd game because he left in the middle)

Assuming you could waive the being in college requirement, now that Nationals is over, I'd be game for this provided it were just history or geography. On just history, I'll probably get wrecked by four top HS players, though. On geo, I'd probably win as long as Karan Menon isn't playing. He alone would destroy me.

I'd very gladly play a game or two on a history set as well.

Sorry for the radio silence - the last couple of weeks of school were tense for me. I'm finally done, so I can start running these matches on Fridays again.

I'll announce that I can read matches probably a week in advance. Even if no one wants to play the role of CP, I'll still post a google hangout link here and read packets so people can keep playing quizbowl over the summer.

If anyone wants to play solo against a bunch of high schoolers (whether they're in college or not), let me know, whether it's in this thread or through PM on here on fb!

I'd be interested in trying this out as the college player one of these days - losing to a bunch of high schoolers sounds like fun. (Certainly, I've had more than enough experience with that this year...)

I would love to lose to high schoolers in a game where I once could beat high schoolers; if I'm available during the appropriate time slot I'd love to play some Quiz Bowl.

Forgot to announce this - I'll be reading for matches tomorrow at 9 PM CDT on google hangouts. I'll post the link here. Anyone who wants to play, whether it's as the role of CP or a "World" player, be sure to come tomorrow! We'll figure out who will be playing based on who comes.

P.S. The room maxes out at 10 people - if any college player is trying to get into the room but can't, it's probably because the room maxed out. PM me or message me on fb and I'll try to figure it out.

P. P. S. If no college players show up, I'll still be reading for practice and there will be scrimmages, so there will still be stuff to do even if it's not CP v. World

So Itamar Naveh-Benjamin and Will Alston requested that they be able to play as a CP dual team, and I obliged. We played on Penn Bowl 2011 packets Minnesota A, Editors 2, and Editors 3. Results of the games:

Game 1: 335 to 285, Will+Itamar win
Game 2: 280 to 310, World wins
Game 3: 350 to 250, Will+Itamar win

So Will+Itamar emerge as the first to win CP v. World! Though it doesn't count for much, since it was a dual team…

Here are stats for game 1, game 2, and game 3. We also livestreamed games 2 and 3 through Hangouts on Air, so if anyone actually wants to see how the matches on those packets went… here it is. Go to 52 minutes, if you want to see the part where anyone other than me talks at all.
