PACE Writing Mentorship Program

Post by Victor Prieto »

PACE is pleased to announce a mentorship program for writers. Any high school graduate is welcome to apply for the program. We are looking for applicants of all experience levels, including those who have never written a question before and those who have written many questions. The motivation behind the program is to provide potential writers a clear gateway to a writing opportunity, and for new writers to absorb good writing principles from experienced editors.

Writers can expect to complete an assignment of twenty four questions over three months, with mentoring and feedback being provided by PACE editors. The payment rates for questions written during this program will be the same as any other NSC writer. After the completion of the program, writers who we believe are qualified will be invited to join the current group of NSC writers.

If you are interested, please complete this application (requires a login with a Google account, if this is an issue, please contact Victor Prieto via private message or email). The application consists of name, contact information, affiliations, and a writing sample of five tossups in NSC format. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis through October 31st. The guidelines for the writing sample can be found here. Please do not share your question samples with other players until after you have received a response to your application.

We emphasize that writers of any skill level are welcome to join this mentorship program. If you are a newer writer, we hope that this provides you an opportunity to develop your writing ability and come into contact with potential collaborators. If you are an experienced writer who has wondered about writing for PACE before, then this program is the best way to get involved in the production of future NSCs.

If you are interested in editing for the first time, the program is also open to writers with some experience that would like to try their hand at subject editing. New editors can expect plenty of support from senior editors, who will be observing throughout the set completion process. If you are interested, please send us an email with a paragraph describing what you’d like to subject edit and your previous writing projects.

Thank you, and we look forward to receiving your applications!

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis through July 31st. I put that date on the application, I'll also put it in my original post.

Hello,

This is just a reminder that this program is ongoing and still accepting applications for the next several weeks. A handful applicants have been accepted and have begun their initial writing assignments.

Thank you!

PACE has decided to extend the deadline for applications from July 31st to October 31st. We've received many great applications, and we hope to see some more. There is a limit on how many writers we will be accepting into the program, so it is still in your best interest to apply earlier rather than later.

As the head editor of the PACE NSC 2019, I would like to encourage all interested writers to take advantage of the mentorship program if there is any desire in contributing to the National Scholastic Championship. This is by far the best way to contribute to the set: there are dedicated editors and writers who are looking forward to assisting with writers of all skill levels!

There are 30 days left to apply for the program. If you're interested in participating, you should apply soon - we cannot accommodate many more mentees in the program, and your chances of being accepted do depend on the number of applicants previously accepted. Thank you!
