Potential Northeast HS Mirror of ACF Fall

Post by Grace »

On the ACF Fall for high schools thread, Colin expressed interest in a local high school mirror of ACF Fall. The closest current high school mirror of ACF Fall is located at the University of Maryland. Since there's no rule prohibiting the same site from running ACF Fall mirrors with different divisions for high school and college teams, I'd like to gauge demand for a HS division at Yale's November 7th site for ACF Fall.

Around how many teams would be the minimum to make a high school division feasible?

I'd like to see at least 6 teams express serious interest before going forward, although I don't know whether that's feasible. As a point of comparison, at last year's Fall mirror, we had only one HS team, High Tech.

I would imagine that Delaware Valley would more likely consider bringing a team if the location were closer than UMD.

I'd have to assume AMSA would be interested, as well.

Put Bishop Guertin down as a maybe. Also, just so I have somewhat of an idea, what does the difficulty level of the competition tend to be at ACF Fall relative to, say, HFT?

I would say the difficulty is between HFT and HSNCT. As a comparison, last year's HFT stat adjustment was +2.24 while the ACF Fall adjustment was +3.11 .

What the hell, I'd go. Probably. So put me down as a "maybe", too.

AMSA would definitely bring a team. I would imagine plenty of NY teams would as well.

The thing is that Hunter's SCOP Novice tournament is that day, which I'd guess many of the New York schools will be going to.

In terms of the NYC/LI area, there aren't many teams that would play ACF Fall even if there weren't a conflicting tournament. I doubt that not having a team or two max from NY will be all that important.

I agree; I was replying to Abhinav to explain why "plenty of NY teams" (specifically Hunter) would not bring teams.

I don't actually think that many NY teams would. I personally can't go because of other obligations that weekend, which will most likely mean that Ithaca won't go (though I haven't talked it over with my teammates). Aside from that, the only NY teams I'd imagine might trek out there to play a difficult set would be Bethlehem, GNS, Hunter, and perhaps some Long Island teams if they're feeling adventurous.

I do hope this happens though, even though I can't go. ACF Fall is a good set to get national-level practice, and something like this could be good for making this circuit more competitive at the higher level.

While this is very, very tentative, East Brunswick would potentially bring a team. Given that it is improbable that our full A team could make it this is somewhat unlikely, although not completely so.

I can confirm that GNS would not send a team to this tournament, because we'll be going to SCOP Novice.

We would move Hunter's SCOP tournament if we could (because high school ACF does seem like loads of fun), but with the previous weekend being the early decision college app deadline and the next two weekends being HFT and BATE (two IS-level tournaments that will definitely have a higher HS turnout than ACF), it seems that having this event on the 7th would be the most accessible to most teams.

We figured that there would not be specific overlap between the two tournaments, because many of the teams who historically attend SCOP are local NYC teams that would probably have no interest in attending ACF anyways. For those who are interested in both though, we urge you to send your newbies and coach to SCOP, while chaperone-accompanied teammates experienced with the quiz bowl scene attend ACF.

Lehigh Valley Academy would consider going to a ACF mirror at Yale on November 7.

Is there any update on the likelihood of Yale hosting an HS division?

We've received the go-ahead from ACF for a HS division, but we just want to confirm staff and room reservations before making an official announcement. Thanks to everyone who got back to us in this thread about interest!
