Hanover Junior Challenge [MS-22] — 4/29, Hanover, N.H.

The Hanover High School Quizbowl Club is pleased to announce it will be hosting an open middle school quizbowl tournament — the Hanover Junior Challenge — on Saturday, April 29, 2017. The tournament will take place at HHS's campus, 41 Lebanon St., Hanover, N.H., beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending by 5 p.m.

The HJC is intended as a fun, social introduction to quizbowl, a team-based competition played on questions drawn from the full range of academic disciplines: history, science, and literature feature prominently in the question distribution, as do geography, current events, and fine arts.

Quizbowl is likely to appeal to academically minded students and those who have enjoyed participating in other academic competitions, such as MATHCOUNTS, the National Geographic Bee, the National History Bee and Bowl, the National Science Bowl, and the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Teams compete head-to-head and may field up to four students at a time, with the opportunity to substitute alternates during halftime and timeouts. Schools are welcome, and encouraged, to register more than one team. All students yet to graduate from eighth grade are eligible to compete.

The HJC will be played on questions produced by National Academic Quiz Tournaments, a leading supplier of academic competition questions. Specifically, we'll be using NAQT's MS-22 set.

NAQT questions come in two forms: three- to four-line-long "tossup" questions, and three-part bonus questions. Players must press their signaling device (similar to those used on Jeopardy!) before they are permitted to answer a tossup question. When a player answers a tossup correctly, she earns a set of bonus questions on which she may confer with her teammates. Each question is worth 10 points, though players receive five extra points — a "power" — for correctly answering tossups within roughly the first half of the question.

NAQT's full rules are posted at naqt.com/rules.html, and I will provide a straightforward summary on the morning of the tournament. In the meantime, please write me with any questions or concerns you may have, whether about NAQT's format or HJC logistics. Closer to the tournament date, I will send all registered teams a more detailed schedule, as well as information about parking (free) and lunch (available at a modest cost).

The tournament registration fee is $50 per team, with a $10 discount applied to the fee of each additional team a school registers. The registration deadline is Saturday, April 22, and payment is due the morning of the tournament. I am happy to send you an invoice, upon request.

I hope to hear from you soon, and that we have the privilege of welcoming you to Hanover in April!

We've signed up enough teams to hold a small tournament on the 29th, but we'd love some more! If you, reader, know any middle school teachers or students in northern New England, we'd appreciate you passing along word of our upcoming tournament.

Congratulations to the "A" team from the Frances C. Richmond Middle School for winning Saturday's Hanover Junior Challenge! From putting up 10 powers in their first-round match to besting their "B" team in the tournament final, RMS A demonstrated consistent individual and team excellence. Congrats as well to the teams from Woodstock Union Middle School, the Marion Cross School, Crossroads Academy, and Russell Elementary, all of whom turned in impressive performances in their debut tournament appearance. Full stats here.
