Clarified Hosting Protocols & Compensation for USABB

Post by Great Bustard »

The protocols and compensation for hosting a USABB regional tournament have been adjusted and clarified at http://www.usacademicbowl.com/more-news-from-usabb/
In particular, we have outlined a set of policies for high schools and universities who might be interested in hosting and have increased the rewards for doing so (since these schools can't claim the free teams and bee entries at the regional level). The hosting policies are also reposted below - if your school is interested in hosting, please contact me at [email protected] Thanks!

All tournaments must occur between February 27 and April 17. Saturdays are preferred, but Sundays, or even after school events can work as well.

Option 1: Middle or Elementary School Hosts and Directs the Tournament

In this instance, the host provides the spaces for the matches and opening meeting, the requisite number of readers, will ensure sufficient directing staff, keep and submit standardized statistics to USABB, and follow all USABB rules and tournament protocols. In return, they receive:
-3 free teams in the regional Academic Bowl tournament and 12 free students in the regional Academic Bee
-1 guaranteed free entry in the National Championships of the US Academic Bowl
-any ancillary revenue from food sales and the like that they wish to sell
-The designated director receives $150 for a tournament of 10 teams or less, $200 for a tournament of 11-20 teams, and $250 for a tournament of 21 teams or more, but no travel expenses.

Option 2: Middle or Elementary School Hosts the Tournament; USABB Sends a Director
In this instance, USABB will provide a director, and the host school’s role is limited to providing the classrooms, gathering space for the opening meeting, and the requisite number of readers per teams that are competing. In return, they receive:
-3 free teams in the regional Academic Bowl tournament and 12 free students in the regional Academic Bee
-1 guaranteed free entry in the National Championships of the US Academic Bowl
-any ancillary revenue from food sales and the like that they wish to sell

Option 3: High School or University Hosts and Directs the Tournament
In this instance, the host will provide the necessary competition and meeting spaces, ensure sufficient directing staff, keep and submit standardized statistics to USABB, and follow all USABB rules and tournament protocols. In return, they receive:
-1 free entry in the National Championships of the National History Bowl OR a hosting fee of $400 (whichever the host prefers)
-50% of the registration revenue beyond the first $300 collected (which covers the cost of awards, shipping buzzer systems, the questions, and pre-tournament coordination expenses)
-any ancillary revenue from food sales and the like that they wish to sell
-The designated director receives $150 for a tournament of 10 teams or less, $200 for a tournament of 11-20 teams, and $250 for a tournament of 21 teams or more, but no travel expenses.

Option 4: High School or University Hosts the Tournament; USABB Sends a Director

-50% of the registration revenue beyond the first $600 collected (which covers the cost of awards, shipping buzzer systems, the questions, the director and their travel, and pre-tournament coordination expenses)
-any ancillary revenue from food sales and the like that they wish to sell

Edited to remove guaranteed team for National History Bowl Nationals for HS hosts - they still need to qualify as usual before receiving a free team; apologies for any misunderstanding.
