Gladiator Fall [MS-07] -- 10/26/13 (Elm Grove, WI)

Post by MichaelFalk »

Dear players and coaches:

St. Mary's Visitation School is delighted to invite you to the third annual Gladiator Fall Tournament on Saturday, October 26, 2013. This is an open junior high (grades 6-8) tournament, to be played on NAQT's MS-07 question set. We will follow NAQT rules except that we will play two ten-question halves instead of timed halves. I expect that this tournament will be a qualifier for MSNCT, to be played in 2014 in Atlanta.

The base fee is $65 per team. We will give you a $10 discount for each working buzzer set you bring and a $10 discount for the second (and subsequent) teams. I'll guarantee at least six games, but more likely you'll play eight.

Our tournament has grown every year. I am going to preliminarily cap the tournament at 16 teams for space, staff, and buzzer concerns, but if there is interest in expanding the tournament, I will do so if I can.

SMV is located in picturesque Elm Grove, WI, convenient to I-94 and US-45, 15 minutes west of downtown Milwaukee and 90 minutes from the Chicago Loop.

Please let me know if you're interested in bringing some students to play. You can email me at mfalk at stmaryeg dot org.

ITT, we learn the first ever match between a Station Campus team and St. Anne's, located <1 mile away, will be held in suburban Milwaukee.
I figure with multiple teams entered, one of my teams HAS to play them at some point...

Hi,

The field is getting really full for our tournament. I'm working on getting enough moderators to stretch the field to 18 or 20 teams. If you're interested, let me know as soon as possible so I can try to accommodate your team!

I'm going to consider the field closed now, in order to assure we have enough moderators and game rooms. Thanks, everyone, for your interest. See you on the 26th!

The field update above is current as of today.

Hi all,

Gladiator Fall took place at SMV today. Station A took first place over Plum Grove A, and third place went to SMV Blue.

Here are all the details:

Four divisions of five teams each played round robins. On their off round, teams played an exhibition cross-division game which didn't count toward stats. The top two teams in each division advanced to one of the two championship brackets (Superior and Michigan). Third and fourth in each bracket advanced to the Huron or Ontario brackets, and fifth advanced to the Erie bracket. Finishing order was:

Air Division:
A1. St. Raymond A (4-0)
A2. Keith A (2-2) (beat Plum Grove B 170-40 in an 8 question tiebreaker)
A3. Plum Grove B (2-2)
A4. SMV Silver (1-3) (placed ahead by PPG over Station C)
A5. Station C (1-3)

Earth Division:
E1. Quest A (4-0)
E2. SMV Blue (3-1)
E3. St. Anne (2-2)
E4. Station D (1-3)
E5. Bayside B (0-4)

Fire Division:
F1. Station A (4-0)
F2. SMV White (3-1)
F3. Bayside A (2-2)
F4. Quest B (1-3)
F5. St. Raymond B (0-4)

Water Division:
W1. Plum Grove A (4-0)
W2. SMV Gold (3-1)
W3. Station B (2-2)
W4. Keith B (1-3)
W5. SMV Black (0-3)

Then, after lunch, each bracket but one stratified evenly.

In the Superior bracket, Station A finished (3-0), SMV Blue was (2-1), St. Raymond A was (1-2), and SMV Gold was (0-3).
In the Michigan bracket, Plum Grove A finished (3-0), Quest A was (2-1), Keith A was (1-2), and SMV White was (0-3).
In the Ontario bracket, Bayside A finished (3-0), Plum Grove B finished (2-1), Keith B was (1-2), and Station D was (0-3).
In the Huron bracket, St. Anne finished (3-0), Station B finished (2-1), SMV Silver was (1-2), and Quest B was (0-3).
In the Erie bracket, SMV Black finished (2-1), Station C finished (2-1), Bayside B was (2-1), and St. Raymond B was (0-3). Position should have been decided by bracket PPG, but I erroneously marked SMV Black as defeating Bayside B. Bayside B (216.7 ppg) and Station C (213.3 ppg) should have played for 17th and 18th place over SMV Black (141.7 ppg).

Finally, the championship games, in order of finish:

1st and 2nd place: Station A 480, Plum Grove A 130
3rd and 4th place: SMV Blue 365, Quest A 245
5th and 6th place: Keith A 275, St. Raymond A 170
7th and 8th place: SMV White 245, SMV Gold 170
9th and 10th place: Bayside A 330, St. Anne 175
11th and 12th place: Plum Grove B 380, Station B 60
13th and 14th place: Keith B 165, SMV Silver 130
15th and 16th place: Quest B 260, Station D 120
17th and 18th place: Station C 280, SMV Black 100
19th and 20th place: Bayside B 275, St. Raymond B 100

I feel it is only fair due to the error above to put Bayside B in 18th place overall and SMV Black in 19th place overall.

After the stats corrections (in which I hope I've eliminated misspellings and misattribution of points):

All games, including tiebreak: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... corrected/

My gratitude goes to the teams and coaches who spend Saturday with us, including some who had never played quiz bowl before. Many thanks to my statisticians: John Eberle, Beth Parey, and Jonah Greenthal. Thanks to my moderators, scorekeepers, and kid supervisors: Will Puchner, Paul Grum, Alana Parey, Kylie Daemmrich, Molly Carrig, Tim Carrig, James Carrig, Paul Kaczynski, Brigid Harmeyer, Neil McLinden, Lex Witkowski, Courtney Falk, Charlie Klein, Jeff Price, Matthew Lehmann, Spencer Lehmann, Burke Seeberg, Jonah Greenthal, Nicholas Peters, and John Eberle. Thanks to my co-coaches, Burke Seeberg and Kylie Daemmrich, who make this team possible; and to Jeff Hoppes, Jonah Greenthal, and R. Hentzel, who helped me tremendously with the logistics of this tournament. See you for Gladiator Open on March 29, 2014!
