As far as I can tell, Walter Munk never headed a project to drill a hole to the Gutenberg discontinuity. I don't think anyone else has ever proposed such a project, either. Except the writers of The Core.

Would anyone be so kind as to send me the packets from ACF Regionals?
I played on them at the USF site, and the USF folks said they would pass them along, but even after a reminder or two, they have yet to.
