ACF Winter Midwest (formerly MLK) at Michigan (1/17/09)

Post by alkrav112 » Fri Nov 21, 2008 5:26 pm

The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor is pleased to announce that it will be hosting ACF Winter on January 17th, 2009. Below are details that I have stolen from Micah's post, which was stolen from the global announcement, which can be found here (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6634):

Questions:
ACF Winter is a packet-submission tournament, and is intended as a regular-difficulty event, with questions slightly harder than those at ACF Fall but comparable to Penn Bowl 2007 or 2008. Per the ACF packet submission guidelines located at http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packetsub.php, "any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2007 is required to submit a packet in order to participate in an ACF tournament in 2008-2009. All ACF tournaments, NAQT Division I or Division II SCT, NAQT ICT, and typical academic invitationals count as regular collegiate academic tournaments for this purpose, but trash or 'hybrid' tournaments, College Bowl/HCASC, and tournaments played on NAQT 'invitational series' questions do not."

For teams required to submit packets, please refer to the guidelines above, and submit your packets according to the following schedule:
Packet submitted by Nov. 15: -$50
Packet submitted by Nov. 29: -$25 (-$50 for optional packets)
Packet submitted by Dec. 13: No penalty (-$25 for optional packets)
Packet submitted by Dec. 20: +$25
Packet submitted by Jan. 4: +$50
No packet submitted by Jan. 4: Dropped from tournament, unless prior arrangements have been made.

Fees:
Base fee: $120 per team
Buzzer systems: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each
Laptop: -$5 each (max 1 per team)
Travel: -$10 for every 200 miles traveled (one-way)
International: -$20
Teams new to ACF: -$25
Teams new to quizbowl: -$75
High school teams: -$50

To register, contact me (Andy Kravis) at alkrav [at] umich [dot] edu. More details to follow as I get them.

Hi all -

I have just received word that Ann B. Davis (which is usually held the day following MLK/ACF Winter) has been cancelled for this and all foreseeable years.

We would still like to hold a trash tournament the following day as per tradition, so I would like to open this thread up to suggestions for such an event. I'm not sure if a house-edited tournament would be viable (especially at this late date), but I'm open to the idea, and I'm also open to running a side-event that is not necessarily pop-culture based.

Case will be sending a team as well.

I think a trash tournament would be fun as well, and I'm sure my team would be likewise interested (probably even more so than the academic tournament). I know it's pretty late, but would a packet submission event be out of the question? I know we'd be willing and able to write a packet or two to see it get done.

Michael Jiang, Siva Sundaram, Joe Ahmad, and I will, in all likelihood, be playing as a team for this.

We don't have to write a packet (correct?), but I think we are going to try to do so.

Michigan State is coming to ACF with 2 teams.

As far as the trash tournament goes, we definitely want that to happen, and would definitely write 2 or 3 packets (we could possibly send 3 teams to it).

I will be coming to this, assuming I can find a way to Michigan. Therein lies the rub.

EDIT: More rub. I should have checked my calender. Science Olympiad is sucking my life away. So, I can no longer come to this at all, as I have to be in PICKERINGTON, OHIO. Lame.

Field Update: 12/19/08
Centre College
Notre Dame
Michigan State (2)
CMU
Ike + Bob Kilner
South Detroit University
Case Western
Ohio State (2)
Toronto
House team?
Illinois
Chicago (3-5)
UIC
Pitt (3)
Total: 19-21 (or, with a house team, 20-22)

It looks as though we will not be running any side events with this tournament. In addition, will those who have registered please let me know if you are bringing buzzers, laptops, moderators, and so on? It would be really helpful to be able to plan for any possible shortages.

Edit: Trygve is awesome, and so is Marnold.

It now looks as though we may be mirroring Penn Bowl Trash at this site, though I may not be the TD. Please post with preliminary interest as soon as possible on the forums, and hopefully if we do end up running this, we will get an announcement up lickety-split in the Trash forum.

UIC would attend this ACF Winter provided the week-early trash mirror runs the following day. I would like to visit the Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids on Martin Luther King Day the day before Barack's inauguration, but the Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor is usually closed on the ten federal holidays.

Hello all,

Thank you, once again, for being a part of ACF Winter and/or the Ann Arbor Penn Bowl Trash mirror. I look forward to a weekend of stellar quiz bowl and beautiful friendships.

Following are the administrative details for this weekend (feel free to e-mail me at qbtriumvirate@umich.edu if this information is in some way unsatisfactory):

Two major points before I go into finer details:

1) Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid, IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY THE MORNING OF EITHER TOURNAMENT, PLEASE CALL ME [I've put my cell phone number in the mass e-mail; please contact me privately if you need it again]. As I state below, there will be little leniency for teams that are just "running late," but if that is the case, it would be nice to know where you are. I will do my best to accommodate teams with true emergencies (e.g. vehicle troubles, road blocks, Montana-sized asteroids penetrating the atmosphere and hurtling toward Earth), but some emergencies will be sadly unaccommodatable.

2) For anyone bringing a laptop: please also bring the power cord. I hope the reasoning behind this is self-explanatory, but do note that it is very, very important. In addition, if there are password settings that would make it difficult for staffers to access necessary components of your computer (i.e. Microsoft Word and the Internet), please disable them, as it will make the tournaments go much more smoothly.

Now for the heart of the matter:

Registration for ACF Winter will begin at 8:15 am, in room 3437 of Mason Hall (for a map of buildings in the campus area, see the following link: http://www.umich.edu/~info/mapsAndDirec ... tralCampus). The nearest parking structure is on Maynard Street, between William and Liberty. There is a parking fee, however. A similar structure exists marginally further away on South Forest. All meters require feeding every two hours on Saturdays, making them a poor choice.

Registration will end at 8:45 am, and the informational meeting will begin at 8:50 am. I say this knowing that quizbowlers can be chronically late and fully expecting that teams will be running additionally late due to the massive amounts of snow in Ann Arbor in January. That said, I would like to run an efficient tournament, so please do make your best effort to be as early as possible, now having no excuse to be ignorant of Michigan's nightmarish weather. I am also setting this timetable in the hope that we can take care of monetary arrangements prior to the beginning of matches. When you arrive, it would be very helpful if you found Surya Sabhapathy (she will make herself very obvious) and took care of any and all financial business.

These two intentions made clear, I would like to issue two caveats: (a) any team arriving later than 9:00 am will likely risk forfeiting early matches, and (b) if a team does not pay its tournament fee before the start of matches, I reserve the right to hold some valuable team possession (e.g. buzzers) as collateral until it does pay.

If the number of teams (currently 20) does not change, I plan to run a 9-game round robin with two 10-team brackets. The top 2 teams in each bracket will go to the top playoff bracket, then the next 2 teams into the next playoff bracket, and so on for 5 playoff brackets. If the top team is two games clear of its top playoff bracket opponents, then it will be declared the winner. Otherwise, a one-game or advantaged final will be held between the top teams, depending on overall and head-to-head record. There will be a quick awards ceremony following the tournament. Every team will thus get to play 12 rounds, which I believe to be a good arrangement. If there is some major objection, I am open to hearing other suggestions, but I foresee this working out just fine.

Any team staying in town for Sunday's trash tournament is encouraged to ask any of our staffers about the many fun things there are to do in Ann Arbor on a Saturday night.

Like I said before, if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact me (and Alex Grandstaff and Surya Sabhapathy) at qbtriumvirate@umich.edu. I'm very much looking forward to this weekend; let's make this inaugural ACF Winter a successful one!

Are there enough blind packets to run a schedule with no byes? It looks like you'll need up to 14 packets to handle finals; if Jerry and co. are producing 17 packets and 4 or more of them involve teams at the site, I think this schedule won't work.

Thank you for pointing this out so quickly. This is a valid, kind, and wise concern, and one to which I will devote some serious thought after some sleep. Preliminarily, here is a thought: if I stumble upon an embarrassment of staffing riches, I will send a house team to play the morning, having 3 brackets of 7 teams each (so far, 7 packets have been used, and there will be byes). Then, the playoffs will consist of three brackets of 6 teams - 2 teams from each prelim bracket - and each team will play every other team in their playoff bracket EXCEPT for the team they have already faced (now, 11 packets have been used). This leaves enough blind packets to have a 2-game finals if need be. With the new byes, alternatively, teams in the playoff bracket could also play the team they have already faced There are pros and cons to this approach, I'm sure. I welcome everyone to enlighten me on the matter, and to provide reasonable arguments for or against playing that team again.

Of course, the above approach only works if I do, in fact, have enough staff to field a team. If this is not the case, and assuming 20 teams, what schedule would teams like to see? I will think about it some more and try to come up with a solution that provides all teams with at least 10 rounds of quiz bowl. [These brackets mark the space where I began to type about 10 different options, subsequently erasing each one because it was wasteful, impractical, or just plain stupid.]

If you have 20 teams for a packet-sub tournament, here are some options. All start with breaking the field into two brackets and having a 10-team round robin (one bye, 10 rounds). After that, you could do crossover brackets in a number of different ways (outlined in the link), which might optimize the getting out at a reasonable time vs. getting to play as many different teams as possible balance.

I think the 10/10 split round robin schedule on the page that Susan linked to looks like a good way to start--everyone gets 9 games in 10 rounds and we can use up to 10 field-submitted packets. From Jerry's list, it looks like up to 11 of the 17 packets could include contributions from teams at the Ann Arbor site, so a large initial round robin would be good. After the first 10 rounds there should be 6 or 7 blind packets depending on how Jerry and co. combine packets. If there are 7, you could do the 10/10 blind crossover (5 games in 5 rounds), the 8/6/6 blind crossover or the 4/4/4/4/4 blind crossover, and still have at least 2 packets for finals. If there are 6, the 8/6/6 or 4/4/4/4/4 options still work. This gives every team 14 games in 15 rounds (10/10 blind crossover), 12-13 games in 14 rounds (8/6/6 blind crossover), or 11 games in 12 rounds (4/4/4/4/4 blind crossover).

If you have an embarrassment of staffing riches, I'd vote for 7/7/7 and then rebracket into 7/7/7 again. This gives every team 12 games in 14 rounds.

Good news! Toronto has informed me that they will have 2 teams, not 1 as I had previously imagined. Thus, the field will consist of 21 teams, and the 7/7/7 prelim, 7/7/7 playoff bracket will work. Thanks everyone for your help!

Hi,

There will certainly be more details, but as a preliminary "here's what's up" post: Chicago A (Victory over Ray Sun) defeated Chicago B (A Ray-Sun in the [Ray] Sun) in a one-game final. Both teams were tied with Illinois in the playoff bracket, but as Illinois was ineligible to win, they took third place.

A great many thanks to all who were able to make it out today to play and to help. There were some delays in the early goings, but we made up time nicely and were able to finish 13 rounds in a fairly reasonable time. See many of you tomorrow!

They used players that aren't in college for a couple of rounds. Will finals be added into the playoff stats?

Sorry for taking so long, but here are the stats through the end of the tournament (updated to include the final round): edit: I removed the link due to not actually having updated the files. See below for corrected stats.

Let me know if anything looks fishy - I learned SQBS during the tournament on Saturday, so there may well be oddities. (Donald - thanks awfully for your help with the stats this weekend!)

I don't think the final is included. Make sure that the reports are to include round 14, assuming that you gave such a designation to the final.

EDIT: Surya, thanks for the kind words. From my experience, the more you do it, the easier it gets.

Okay, I think these should be right. I'm taking down the link in the last post. Thanks again, Donald.
