TRASH Regionals Midwest: 11/16/08 at Illinois

Postby millionwaves » Wed Oct 01, 2008 12:37 pm

This is an announcement for the Midwest site of the TRASH Regional tournament, which will be held Sunday, November 16, at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois. I will serve as the tournament director for this event, and if you would like to register or ask questions regarding this event, please e-mail me at trygvemeade@gmail.com.

This event is currently scheduled to run in the UIUC Armory. As this building is hilariously sub-optimal for running quizbowl tournaments, we may consider starting the tournament later than normal so that we can get a better building. If anyone would be inconvenienced by starting the tournament later than normal (10:00 AM or so) so that I can reserve rooms in a more reasonable building, please let me know. Of course, we don't intend to run fewer rounds than normal, so the tournament would end commensurately later.

Please note that there is an open academic tournament, the Illinois Open, the day before. We encourage all interested parties to compete in both tournaments; however, there are no plans to offer a discount for doing so at this time. If you'd like to play both tournaments and finances are a problem, contact me and we can work something out.

Fee Schedule:

Base Fee: $100
Buzzer Discount; $5/buzzer up to $20 total.
Staff Discount: $10/competent staffer.
Minimum Fee: $70.

Field:

The Hypnotoads
Notre Dame x 3
Chicago
Michigan x 2
Minnesota
Luminaries of Illinois Quizbowl Past and Present(maybe)
Rom and Friends
Grinnell
Iowa State

Again, if you need any information regarding this event or would like to sign up, please e-mail me at trygvemeade@gmail.com. I hope to see many of you in November!

That's awesome, but I'm not sure who you are. If you could send me an e-mail at trygvemeade@gmail.com to let me know who you are and also for my records, I'd appreciate it.

Okay, it's looking like my aforementioned and still nameless team may need a free agent if one is available. Shoot me an email at INVADERGII at GMAIL dot COM if you or someone you know may be available.

Also, how many other teams are signed up for this so far?

Because I will have a rental car (yet again) for three days and a family to give me a bed and meals (for the third time), I will stick around Sunday morning, hoping my movie expertise can land me a spot as a free agent. I really cannot borrow UIC's lock-out systems anymore. However, I had better bring my CPS laptop (any discount?) just in case other players have to leave early to catch flights/transportation, for I do not want the moderators running out of notebooks.

Hey, guys,

We seriously need more teams for this. I've heard interest from a possible team in passing at Rob Pilatus at MO, but that puts us at two, maybe four. Are there any schools coming to IO that want to stick around and play this as well?

That was us you talked to at MO. We're not coming; it's actually easier travel-wise for us to get to Boulder, so we're going there.

Sorry I didn't make this clear earlier: at practice today, Michigan decided that we are almost certainly bringing 3 teams to this.

If the Minnesota teams stick around long enough to play this, I will definitely play. I'm sure I can get a team going of fellow Minnesotans, but if I can't, I'll free agent.

Hey, everyone,

I've posted a field update above. You have until 11:59 PM tomorrow night to let me know if you're coming; registration is closed after that.

At this point, we'll be running a round robin, followed by a bracketed playoff. Registration will start at 8:30 in the Armory, and play will start at 9 AM. I will send a final e-mail on Friday, once I know what the final field is.

Congratulations to Chicago Stone Cold Peter Austin for winning the Midwest TRASH Regionals, held today at UIUC. Coming in second was Car Ramrod, a team of free agents, and after that was Illinois. Congratulations to Mike Cheyne of Minnesota/Car Ramrod for being the non-spurious top scorer.

Thanks to Charles Martin, who did stats excellently today. Thanks also to Micah Hodosh, Craig Messner, Greg Baboukis, and Curt Peterson for coming to staff today - we couldn't have done it without any of you.

Thanks also to TRASH, who wrote what I consider to be the best TRASH Regionals set that I've ever seen, and further to all the teams who came out and played both days - we enjoyed having all of you, and we look forward to seeing you guys at other tournaments.

Thanks to Trygve and all of the Illinois staff for this. Speaking on behalf of The Hypnotoads, we had an absolute blast. Two of our team members had never played quiz bowl in any form until today, and they had a fantastic first experience. We look forward to competing again soon.

Before anyone mentions this (which, given the boards nature, will happen), I'm going to publicly apologize for two of the three Notre Dame teams leaving at lunchtime. It was inexcusable, and I will not discuss it further on this board.

Pursuant to this, I'd like to extend my apologies to teams who graciously agreed to sit and play against empty chairs for their rounds against the two teams that left, in addition to the resulting delays in the schedule. Everyone was a pretty good sport about that, which helped the situation considerably.

This was an enjoyable tourney--thanks to those running it and those who wrote the questions. Without discussing specifics, I will just say they were very solid and definitely did not live up to the horrifying reputation I have sometimes heard of TRASH packets.

Makes no difference, either, but the "Andrew" credited with playing on Car Ramrod during the Grinnell game, I think, was me.

Thanks to my fellow free agent teammates, as well, for picking up questions about popular music and other stuff I don't know anything about.
