MUT @ MIT (April 26, 2014)

Post by t-bar »

MIT will host a mirror of the Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament on Saturday, April 26. As usual, MUT will be a slightly below-regular tournament, somewhere between ACF Fall and regular-difficulty tournaments. Eligibility will be restricted to current high school and undergraduate students; graduate students and others who do not meet standard undergraduate qualification requirements may not play.

Fees:
Base fee: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: -$10 each
Approved moderator discount: -$15 each (we definitely appreciate teams bringing moderators; please let us know earlier rather than later if you plan to bring one so we can give you the okay)
Travel discount: -$15 (more than 200 miles one way according to Google maps)

We can accept payment on the day of the tournament in the form of cash or checks made out to "MIT Quiz Bowl Team". Important new policy: If you will not have payment ready on the day of the tournament, it is your responsibility to alert us ahead of time. If you do not pay us on or before April 26 and do not contact us ahead of time with a good explanation for why not, we will assess a $25 late fee and be quite persistent in securing your payment as soon as possible. If you need us to fill out any forms or send you an invoice, please let us know well ahead of the tournament date.

To register, email me at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers (if any), and moderators (if any) you are bringing, as well as a cell phone number at which we can contact you on the day of the tournament. Posts in this thread will be considered expressions of interest, but you must email me the preceding information to be considered officially registered. Due to our current room reservation, we are setting an initial field cap of 18 teams. We may be able to go beyond this cap if there is interest, but we can't guarantee it.

Check-in on the morning of the tournament will run from 8:30 to 9:00 AM in room 6-120, which is located on the first floor of MIT's Building 6. Games will start as soon as possible after everyone has arrived, and will take place in the nearby Building 4.

As should be obvious, MIT event policy forbids alcohol at events that do not have specific approval for it. Please do not bring any alcohol to this tournament.

For teams unfamiliar with traveling to Boston, you should know that while MIT is easily accessible by public transit, parking on campus is extremely limited. There is a small parking lot at 139 Massachusetts Avenue (on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar Street) that several teams have used in the past; other information about parking is available here. On public transportation, take the Red Line to the Kendall/MIT stop, which is marked along with building 6 on this map.

We are at 15 teams registered. Due to staff constraints, I'm imposing a field cap of 16 until we can guarantee enough staff to expand to 18. If more teams want to come, we'll start a waitlist.

With the registration of Vassar B, we have reached 16 teams, so the field is now closed. Teams should be receiving an email with logistical information from me later this evening.

Prelim stats: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... standings/.

Pending a tiebreaker between Vassar A and Northeastern, teams will play crossover games (top 4 against top 4, bottom 3 against bottom 3), followed by finals if necessary.

Harvard B defeated Brown A 425-165 to win a one-game final; both teams had one loss up to that point, with Harvard B losing to Brown A in the previous round and Brown A losing to Dartmouth earlier. Full results will be up later.

EDIT: Full stats are posted at http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... /combined/.
