Re: Gauging interest for a KABO mirror at Waterloo

Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:05 pm

If this was being run a week later than the main site, I could not go. I could go the week of the main site, or two weekends after.

Re: Gauging interest for a KABO mirror at Waterloo

Mon Jun 11, 2012 11:07 pm

Two weekends after would be okay for us. We just can't run it on the 4th because a sizable portion of our team will be writing exams.

Re: Gauging interest for a KABO mirror at Waterloo

Tue Jun 12, 2012 12:08 am

If it was two weeks after, I might be legitimately interested. I live right next to Ann Arbor, but I'll be busy the Saturday of competition.

Re: Gauging interest for a KABO mirror at Waterloo

Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:34 am

I would be interested depending on the date.

Re: Gauging interest for a KABO mirror at Waterloo

Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:53 pm

If Ottawa ends up going, I will be their chauffeur and, presumably, their teammate.

There is a possibility of a Buffalo team on the 18th. I can't say for sure, as our usual driver is unavailable, as are some of our usual candidates. If this happens, I'll see if we can put a team together.

Re: Gauging interest for a KABO mirror at Waterloo

Wed Jun 20, 2012 9:29 am

Also, if this were pushed to the 25th, I can almost guarantee a Buffalo team of some sort, as our driver would then be available.

I understand if you are reluctant to push it back this far, especially from a summer event to what would then be an early fall event. However, I think Valencia has their mirror on the 25th as well.

The 18th is when some of us could be moving back onto campus for the fall, but by the 25th I know at least 4 quizbowlers that will be on campus, and will have nothing better to do.

Re: Gauging interest for a KABO mirror at Waterloo

Wed Jun 20, 2012 9:53 pm

I can second the interest of a Buffalo team, if the tournament were to be on the 25th.

EDIT: To be clear, I am unavailable on the two previous weekends, which will likely deprive Buffalo of a driver.

I don't think we'll be able to run this on the 25th, sorry. :(

Hey all: I am throwing my hat in the ring as a free agent. I would prefer to see some sort of trashy thing run as a side event (Mike Cheyne movies?).

bmcnama -AT- uwo -DOT- ca, or Facebook me if you want to play along.

I'll probably be coming to this as a free agent. I can be emailed at patarDOTknightDOTwikiATgmailDOTcom

Still polling Buffalo's availability on the 18th, we'll see who wants to play.

I would be willing to play VESPERS if anyone else wanted to. [EDIT: I don't know what the writing status for VESPERS is, but if its done I'd play it.]

It's probably not happening at KABO. (Right now, we're gauging interest for MO.)

It is likely, but not confirmed, that I will attend as a player on some Ottawa team.

I also support the movies side event. I'm better at "older" movies, so if it is doubles, I'll want to partner up with someone who knows recent stuff (who may just end up being an Ottawa player).

Re: KABO Mirror at University of Waterloo: August 18, 2012

Tue Jul 10, 2012 10:53 am

It would be cool if ANFORTAS could be attached as a side-event.

Re: KABO Mirror at University of Waterloo: August 18, 2012

Sat Jul 21, 2012 2:43 pm

Guelph may have a team for this. And there is definite interest in the movie side event, or any other trash component.

If nothing drastic changes in the next two weeks, then I will be playing this in Michigan and will be able to staff this event.

I'm definitely in...I don't know what my team will be, whether it'll be Mac-based or free-agent-like. Also, I may know some other interested parties that aren't on this forum who may appreciate coming out. I'll try to let yall know ASAP.

Some announcements:

Due to room bookings, we'll be capping the field at eight teams.

If you're looking for teammates, you can use the Waterloo tab on this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... T1E#gid=10

Those that have expressed tentative interest, it'd be great if you could let me know more definitely if you'll be coming by end of next week at the latest.

Thanks!

It looks like there will not be a team from Buffalo on this date. We'll see you around later in the season.

Jay, do you still need people to play with? Both Victor and myself are interested in playing this (especially the movies side-event), and are looking for people to play with. Let me know.

Fo sho, as of now I do need a team to play with. I'm also willing to play whatever side-events (particularly ANFORTAS)

Guelph will definitely have one team for this.

Thu Aug 09, 2012 7:29 pm

The on-campus food places are closed on weekends. Would someone be able to coordinate a pizza sale for lunch and/or dinner (especially if all the side events are going ahead)?

I think there is only one "Ottawa" team now (check with Brendan). I will bring a buzzer set. As for the side events, I will play movies and can staff myth; I haven't seen much interest in technology here, but if it is running, I can play it.

Yeah, we've got space for one more team. I'm going to send an email tonight or tomorrow to all teams, so could I get a contact for the second Mac team? Thanks!

I totally loved doing this, but I want to raise something: should Canadian schools be mirroring open tournaments? I know Waterloo KABO was announced and planned before the difficulty of the tournament was clear, but I think the field yesterday might have preferred easier or shorter questions. I don't mean to say that we couldn't handle the KABO questions (I saw plenty of good buzzes and 20s/30s despite the overall low stats) but that playing something easier next time would be more fun. Canada is a friendly circuit with enough young people and casual players, and not too many people trying to train themselves for a run at Nationals. Some Ottawa players lost interest in going to KABO when I told them I couldn't promise low difficulty.

There's a bit of a taboo on playing high school questions, but between MUT/SCT and September, when easy college sets aren't being produced, I think some high school sets would be optimal for universities to mirror sometimes. If Ottawa hosts anything next summer, I would plan or petition the planners to consider an IS or an HSAPQ set or something.

This is beyond the scope of this thread, but one thing that I think would be a good (if potentially impractical) idea is to have an "easy" college level (it could even still be open, just easy) in the summer. The summer unfortunately becomes a dead time for people of lower skills who wish to continue to play quizbowl and not have to play very hard stuff. A lot of our more inexperienced players play their first year of collegiate quizbowl and then don't play much if anything in the summer because there are really no events geared for them. VCU Open one year did a reasonably easy event as the Sunday portion of a two-day event (and an easy summer tournament would probably have to be paired with something else to encourage turnout). Of course, who would write such a tournament--that's the dilemma here.

I remember the good old days when Kurtis could write a summer open event and have 10 teams show up to the Canada site.

I don't know if there was anything like this outside of the Midwest, but there was a St. Louis Open on an uncleared high school set, a (somewhat informal) Chicago-area high school tournament on a 2007 unposted high school set, and another Chicago-area tournament on a recent HS set that had much interest but was cancelled. The reason these were possible is that the organizers live in the vicinity of their schools and apparently don't have trouble getting rooms in the summer. I do not know for sure if that is the case in every circuit, where people live near their school (or aren't taking an internship elsewhere) and can get easy room access in the summer (or in general).

Yeah, I'm sorry I misjudged the difficulty of this set (though Kurtis did warn me). I don't know if not mirroring hard tournaments is the solution. If the IO mirror Mac mentioned wanting to host happens, I'll be there, despite how much out of it I was yesterday. On the one hand, it may not be fun only being able to answer 1 or 2 questions per round, but on the other hand, I found the KABO set far more interesting than one-lining questions on a set like MUT.

I want to thank everyone who came out to our mirror and seemed to be trying to enjoy themselves despite the high difficulty of the questions. The social aspect of our circuit becomes apparent at events like this, and I think it's nice that, as Brendan says, our circuit is more friendly than competitive. With time (a lot of time), we might reach the point where we can enjoy hanging out and do well on sets like this KABO, but we'll only get to that point by continuing to try harder events. Maybe something a little easier than this set for the near future, though.

Of course, a thank you goes out also to the staffers who read, kept score, and ran stats all day--Aaron, Daniel, Ming-Ho, Aayush, Joseph, Stephen, this tournament couldn't have happened without your efforts!

I attended this, and a general opinion going around was that using a high school set for a summer college open was a bad move, as opposed to an easy/regs or less college tournaments to run. The obvious difficulty is that there really weren't any TO run. I would agree that a MUT-level tournament (or something in that area) written specifically FOR summer tournaments would be a brilliant idea.
