ANNOUNCEMENT: Penn-ance (10/20/2012)

by Sima Guang Hater
I am pleased to announce Penn-ance for the Fall semester of 2012. We hope to run this tournament and all of its mirrors on October 20th and 27th.

QUESTIONS

This tournament will be written entirely by a team of James Lasker, Patrick Liao, Saajid Moyen, Eric Mukherjee, Sam Passaglia, Dallas Simons, David Xu, and Korey Gall. Eric Mukherjee will be head-editing, with assistance from Jerry Vinokurov.

In keeping with the spirit of the tournament title, we seek to use this set as an example going forward of the high quality of questions and tournament logistics the Penn team is capable of producing. Because of this goal, we are employing the help of Jerry Vinokurov in assisting Eric with the editing of the questions.

All questions will be power marked and no question will go past the 8th line (including bolding for power). The target difficulty is equivalent to MAGNI, the tournament that held this spot in the schedule last year.

The distribution we are using is as follows:
4/4 Literature (1/1 World and Other)
4/4 History
4/4 Science (1/1 Math and Other)
3/3 Arts
3/3 RMP
1/1 SS
1/1 Geography, CE, Trash, and Other

Each packet will also have a tiebreaker tossup and an extra bonus, each from literature, history, or science.

HOSTING

We are looking for mirrors in all regions. The mirror fee will be $35 per team. All mirrors of this tournament should run on either October 20th or 27th, pending a confirmation of these dates.

This tournament will not allow open teams at any site. Teams must be current students at the university or high school level.

At the main site, we will use the following fee structure:
Base fee: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: $10 each
Approved moderator discount: $15 each
Travel discount: $15 (more than 200 miles one way according to Google maps)

If you have any questions, please contact Eric Mukherjee at infinitestryker0 at gmail dot com.

A few notes:
-People have [rightfully] asked about Penn's capacity to write this tournament, and/or to write it well. I would simply point out a few things:
1. [SOME PERCENTAGE SEE BELOW] of this tournament is currently written.
2. Jerry will have an active role in the preparation of this set.
3. I am not working on any other tournaments after PACE NSC is done; I will be spending all of my time on this. This was NOT the case with Penn Bowl.
4. I will be posting updates on completion or preparing a public spreadsheet with percent completion, like was done with THUNDER 2, when this starts picking up.

-This tournament will not affect the writing of VCU Closed; we will host this tournament before VCU closed packets will start coming in. We will also be hosting VCU closed in the Spring.

Haven't had an update in two weeks, here's one. Sam surges ahead while David Xu makes a strong showing out of the gate.

First post has been updated to reflect new mirrors. We're still looking for West Coast and UK mirrors, so please contact me or Saajid if you're interested.

Also, I've heard clamorings that people want a Northeast mirror as well; if anyone would like to step up for that (Brown? Harvard? MIT? Yale?), please contact us as well.

MIT is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Northeast mirror of Penn-ance; hopefully this will provide another regular-difficulty tournament for teams unwilling to make the trek down to Philadelphia. Expect an announcement thread sometime soon.

Out of curiosity, how is the progress on this set coming?

There hasn't been much progress since the last update, but we will be writing a lot in the coming two weeks (orientation and syllabus week). We have also gone back and edited a lot of the questions that we had written previously.

Is this the appropriate thread for noting that Penn State will be in attendance? I know you guys want an email, but I don't do that stuff. Well, try not to, at least.

At the moment we're looking at 2 teams, though if I can steal my roommates' van we might be able to bring 3.

So, when can MIT expect the set?

Look, I'm sorry, but you're going to get packets in time for your tournament, guaranteed. We've completed the set, had it playtested, and we're just running behind on packet compilation and randomization.

Packets were sent about an hour ago. Please call my cell phone number or send me an email directly in case any issues arose.

EDIT: Guess I should put this here

So I guess that means Eric covered the spread; all the people who bet on Saajid +75 are going to be sorely disappointed this morning.
