CO Side Event Wrangling

Post by Cheynem »

Let's list the side event possibilities here. I'm too lazy to find the appropriate links, so maybe I'll edit them in when I get a chance, but if I remember right, choices include:

-return of CO History Doubles

-Will Butler's tech tournament

-my film tournament

-some sort of guerrilla trash tournament with possibly themes

-WIll Nediger's lit tournament

-Saajid Moyen's lit tournament

-some music tournament written by MSU players

So what say the masses (assuming that all of these that aren't guerrilla sets will be completed by then, which may be inaccurate)?

If I had to rank these, I would say I would prefer to see something like history doubles on Friday night again (assuming we can finish this time), and then assuming no main CO trash event, a conjunction of Nediger lit/guerrilla trash on Sunday. I guess I could set up a DOODLE or a POLL, but eh.

I like literature and history, and I guess if Will did his thing I'd play that. Otherwise I don't care.

I'm obviously interested in having another guerilla history tournament, and I am willing to help on the logistical side of it.

would you now

I mean if guerilla trash happened I'd probably write/play. It won't be any loss to me if it doesn't, hence my indifference.

If the masses clamor for a repeat of last year, I would be happy to reprise the extremely small amount of work that I did on co-organizing the guerrilla history tournament and writing half the editors' packet. If Chris isn't attending the tournament, it would be good to work with him again on it. Maybe this year you can actually read the editors' packet.

Predictably, interest doesn't seem too great for the classical music tournament. We're definitely going to hold it eventually, but probably not for CO. We'll see.

One thing that we will need to consider is whether Friday night events are an option after last year's police fiasco.

Judging from most comments, it seems the more popular events will be the more general audience ones--history and lit, so it would seem smart to expect at least those two to appear. I think the wacky informality of a guerrilla trash event lends itself to just reading some theme packets Saturday or Sunday night in a shootout format (hell, even during lunch those days).

I'll withdraw the film event and will offer it to VCUO or other summer events.

I think we should not do Friday events. Dealing with the police there was incredibly uncomfortable, and I thought Matt Weiner was right when he said Friday night CO events caused undue travel stress and made the main event potentially less enjoyable for people who don't have enough time to get a full night's sleep after a Friday event.

I actually have no problem with Friday events, but I can see why they might prove frustrating to people--if there is no main trash event on Sunday, doing it then would probably be better. Thoughts?

Look, there are no good answers here. If we play a Friday event it will cause travel headaches, if we play a Saturday night event it might not even happen at all because CO is a 16 team round robin that lasts forever.

Pick your headache. I pick Friday night.

Sundays are for trash, but if there's no trash tournament this year we can do whatever we want on Sunday.

Saturday night is definitely the bitch seat, and the history tournament, being the most established and in-demand event at CO, should not sit there. If there's no trash, I can envision splitting Sunday between lit and history side events.

I am up for being a bad teammate at literature first, then history and tech in that order.

I'd encourage Will Nediger and Saajid to consider combining their events - something like "ten reasonable answer lines, ten WILD AND CRAZY ones per packet" would be an interesting conceit for games, and it relieves some pressure on each of them.

And yeah, as far as I know from the one CO I've been to, CO proper lasts forever and the side event wouldn't start until at least 10 or 11 PM, and that's without whatever godawful dinner break procedure might ensue. Friday night seems sub-ideal (the event would have to be short and the rooms actually reserved), but Saturday seems actually not doable period.

All side event time slots are suboptimal, so I think Bruce is right, you have to pick your poison. My heavy preference from the options listed is to have lit and history side events, whoever wants to do it (part Nediger, part Moyen? I don't know).

Enough people have put music down as one of their top preferences that I hope you still consider trying to run it during CO. (Though I suppose the big question would be "when"?) If there are only five packets, it shouldn't take long to run. Besides, I don't think you're actually going to get stronger interest at other tournaments (if anything, there will probably be even less interest), and you're certainly going to get a much weaker field.

Yeah, you´re right - there´s more interest than I predicted. I´ll talk to Connor about it, once I get over this nasty Ecuadorian virus I have, and I think we probably will run it at CO if we can find a time to do so.
