After an unduly long delay, I am pleased to announce that George Mason University will be hosting Chicago's house-written tournament, "the Peaceful Resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis" on March 3, 2012. The tournament will be edited by Ike Jose of Illinois and Marshall Steinbaum of Chicago, and Gautam Kandlikar will be the science consultant. The writing team consists of several Chicago teammates: Connie Prater, Tracy Lee, Charles Tian, Sam Bailey, and George Dewey.

REGISTRATION:

Teams must register prior to the day of the tournament in order to play. To register, please e-mail me at ben.cole.19 AT gmail.com with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and an email address where you can be contacted with details. I will e-mail my team contacts with necessary information as we approach the tournament. Feel free to share this announcement with any schools that you think would be interested in attending.

DIFFICULTY AND DISTRIBUTION:

This tournament is intended as preparation for ACF Nationals. Consequently, we will be largely adhering to the ACF Nationals distribution. The editors also intend to ruthlessly control difficulty--we would like to make sure there are no dead tossups or impossible bonus parts.

4/4 Literature: 1/1 American, 1/1 British, 1/1 European, and 1/1 World.

4/4 History: 1/1 American, 1/1 European (not British), 1/1 World, 1/0 or 0/1 British, and 1/0 or 0/1 Ancient/Classical.

4/4 Science: 1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1/0 or 0/1 Math or CS, and 1/0 or 0/1 Astronomy or Earth Science.

3/3 Arts: 1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, and 1/1 Other (including Architecture, Sculpture, Installation, Ballet/Dance, Film, Photography, UDPATE: NO Pornography).

3/3 RMP: 1/1 Religion, 1/1 Mythology, and 1/1 Philosophy.

1/1 Social Science: Psychology, Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, and Political Science.

2/1 Other Academic, Geography, and Current Events

ELIGIBILITY:

The tournament will be open to anyone. However, the editors may attempt to ensure a competitive marketplace by limiting superteams. If you'd like to sign up, please leave a note in this thread.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:

Base fee per team: $120
Discount for an additional team from the same university: -$10
Functional buzzers: -$10 each
Travel: --$10 per team if three or more members travel in excess of 200 miles.
Moderator discount: -$10 per moderator

Minimum fee: $0

LOCATION:
The tournament will likely take place entirely in the Johnson Center, one of the largest and most recognizable buildings on campus, which is marked in red as number 29 on this campus map. We will meet in the Johnson Center Cinema on the lowest floor of the Johnson Center. If you have trouble locating the Cinema, there is an Information Desk in the center of the building on the first floor, whose staff should be of assistance.
Game rooms will be on the third floor, the second floor, and the ground floor. There is an elevator on one side of the building which can go to the ground floor. The elevator on the other side of the building can get to the first, second, and third floors.
Check-in will begin at 8:00 AM, morning announcements will be as soon as possible after 8:30, and play will begin at 9:00.

DIRECTIONS:
Please be sure that your directions are to the Fairfax campus and not the Arlington, Prince William, or Loudoun campuses. For GPS, the nearest intersection to the tournament location (and to parking) is Mason Pond Drive and Patriot Circle. The tournament will take place in the Johnson Center (JC). We will meet in the JC Cinema on the ground floor (NOT the first floor). If you have trouble locating the Cinema, there is an Information Desk in the center of the building on the first floor, whose staff should be of assistance. For on campus parking, park on the visitor level of the Mason Pond parking deck, which is marked in purple as number 39 on this campus map and is located very close to the Johnson Center, which is marked in red as number 29 on this campus map. The daily rate is $14.
If you arriving via the DC Metro and CUE bus, the CUE bus lets riders off on Rappahannock River Lane, right next to the Rappahannock parking deck, which is marked in purple as number 40 on this campus map. Proceed to the Johnson Center as marked on the campus map. Staff may be sent to Rappahannock River Lane to walk you to the JC.

METHOD OF PAYMENT: It is preferable that you pay by cash instead of check, however we will potentially have little cash on hand for making change. If you will be paying by check, make your check out to "GMU Quiz Bowl;" if you're concerned about fraud, endorse them on the back, write "Deposit only" and our student organization's number, 610472.

FOOD: Lunch will not be provided. We urge all teams to eat on campus to avoid delays. The Johnson Center contains several places to eat, including a sub station, a Burger King, a Panera-like sandwich place, an Indian station, and a Chinese station. There are more places to eat outside the Johnson Center, but we strongly encourage all teams to eat in the Johnson Center to avoid delays. We will provide teams with a food guide.

I'm interested in playing this tournament on an open team, if others care to join me.

EDIT: David Seal, Evan, and I are looking for teammates.

NYU will be bringing a team to this, and Doug Yetman (Hunter College/Laguardia CC) will be joining us.

A field update on this page will be appreciated so we have an idea of who we are playing.

I heard 2 or 3 UVa people are going and I also heard Bruce Arthur's name bandied about. I am not attending since last year's version of this tournament was terrible, and not in that so-bad-it's good "Hobgoblins" way but just the nihilistic, ennui-inducing "Manos" way. VCU team members also felt that this question set is unlikely to be a good use of time or money and decided not to go.

Since this is such a small field how would people feel about running a brief tournament (like a single round robin) and then doing a draft or some other exciting reconfiguration of teams?

I'm okay with doing this if a majority of the field is.

This is important: we are currently short one buzzer. We absolutely must have one more, so somebody please bring one. Two would be preferable, because our team buzzer is not always completely reliable.

I will be sending an informational email tonight.

I can try to get our buzzer set to Matt before he heads home this evening.

EDIT: Buzzer hand-off occurred successfully, so Matt should have them tomorrow.

I'm somewhat intrigued by Evan's idea - perhaps we can figure it out tomorrow morning, though I'd like to get a few games in normally as this is the last tournament(-like event) before nationals. Maryland plans to have around 8-10 people, for what it's worth.

In case someone didn't get my logistical email:

This is the official logistics email for the tournament. A map of the Fairfax campus of George Mason University is attached. If at all possible, please send me a roster with the names of the individuals on your teams and please give me a phone number to contact.

Though the information below is in the same format as in the HSQB thread, it has been edited, so please read it. If you have any questions which are not answered in this email, please email/call/text me at this email address or at the phone number .

LOCATION: The tournament will take place in the Lecture Hall and Krug bulidings, which are marked in black as number 31 and 32 on this campus map. We will meet in Lecture Hall 2. Game rooms will be in Lecture Hall 2, Lecture Hall 3, and Krug 204 or 253. Check-in will begin at 8:00 AM, morning announcements will be as soon as possible after 8:30, and play will begin at 9:00.

DIRECTIONS: Please be sure that your directions are to the Fairfax campus and not the Arlington, Prince William, or Loudoun campuses. For GPS, the nearest intersection to the tournament location (and to parking) is Mason Pond Drive and Patriot Circle. The tournament will take place in the Lecture Hall and Krug buildings. We will meet in the Lecture Hall 2. For on campus parking, park on the visitor level of the Rappahannock parking deck, which is marked in purple as number 40 on this campus map and is located very close to the Lecture Hall, which is marked in black as number 32 on this campus map. (Krug is marked in black as 31.) The daily rate is $14. If you arriving via the DC Metro and CUE bus, the CUE bus lets riders off on Rappahannock River Lane, right next to the Rappahannock parking deck, which is marked in purple as number 40 on this campus map. Proceed to the Lecture Hall as marked on the campus map. Staff may be sent to Rappahannock River Lane to walk you to the JC.

FORMAT: Assuming the field size stays the same (i.e. that no one drops), there will be at least a single round robin. There has been a request from some teams, after the first round robin, to reorganize the teams, draft-style. If the majority of the field approves of this, we may go with this format. We will keep individual statistics. Book prizes will be awarded to the top teams and to at least the top 8 individual scorers.

METHOD OF PAYMENT: Cash is preferable to check; however, we will potentially have little cash on hand for making change. Make checks out to "GMU Quiz Bowl," endorse them on the back, write "Deposit only" and our student organization's number, 610472.

FOOD: Lunch will not be provided. We urge all teams to eat on campus to avoid delays. The Johnson Center contains several places to eat, including a sub station, a Burger King, a Panera-like sandwich place, an Indian station, and a Chinese station. There are more places to eat outside the Johnson Center, such as a Chick-Fil-A in Student Union Building I (i.e. SUB I) and a burger place called Original Burger in the HUB. We will provide teams with a food guide.

Below is the final field.

Registered (4-5): UVA Maryland x2-3 NYU

Buzzer: UVA Maryland x2 NYU

We are playing a single round robin with the university teams, then we're going through with Evan's draft idea for the remaining round robins. The finals will be decided based on the drafted teams.

Will the draft order be posted, so that we can judge all of you from afar, Mel Kiper style?

Somebody else can if they care to do so. UVA won a single round robin of three games, defeating Maryland in the first game of an advantaged final. Packet 4 was used for that game.

The drafted rounds have begun. We will play either a double or triple round robin with these four teams. The teams consist of:
  • Isaac Hirsch Victory Train- Matt Bollinger, Mirza (NYU), Bilal (NYU), Isaac Hirsch, Zach Foster
  • Limsanity- Evan Adams, Chris (UMCP), Daniel Hothem, Andrew Lim
  • Team Chris Ray- Chris Ray, Dan Puma, Paul (UMCP), Brian (UMCP)
  • Team Doug Yetman- Arun, David Seal, Reddi (NYU)
Stats for the university team round robin are here.

Stats for the three draft rounds are available here.

Someone decided to change team composition again, because "no one really cares." The teams are back to their original composition, except Daniel Hothem was traded for Isaac Hirsch. We will play either one or two more round robins.

After playing another round robin, modified UVA played Maryland A in another "final" (packet 11) and won. Matt Bollinger, Chris Ray, Doug Yetman, and Evan Adams were the top four scorers.

I've separated the three draft rounds from the double round robin stats, which also include the two "final" rounds between Maryland and UVA, rounds four and eleven.
