Movie Set (Weekend of August 4th at KABO)

[edited with accurate information]

This set is finished. It will have 13 packets, with the final packet hazily more difficult than the rest (although not by much), tossups-only, questions about 7-9 lines, with powers. Difficulty is reasonably robust--expect a couple questions per round to be very difficult, but there are also plenty of very notable, well known things. I've tried to include a mix of "trashy" and "academic," as well as some things that just happen to interest me. It is vanity in the sense that it reflects my interests and tastes (so some directors, genres, performers pop up more than others, and they're primarily American oriented), but not in the sense that there are 10 tossups on the movie Rat Race or something like that.

I don't purport this set to be the be-all of how to write great film questions, just as a fun, entertaining set. I think they kind of reflect how I study film or what I'm interested in, but it sort of shows how different people are attracted to or remember different things.

I think when I first proposed this set Donald Taylor and Zach Foster sent me some questions. However, in the interim between then and now, I switched computers and misplaced them, so sorry about that. Thanks to those guys for contributing.

In terms of the distribution, the majority of the questions are on films/performers/directors. There are very few common links, not because I hate them but because that's what I decided to run with. For performer questions, trivial biographical details and "dumping of film titles/roles" will be discouraged in favor of memorable performances, lines, and actions (i.e., an actor tossup will definitely not say "Born in 1936, his first film was ___"). In some cases, I chose to use performer tossups to allow using clues on harder or more interesting films that would not otherwise be possible.

This set will run at sometime during KABO weekend, either that Saturday or Sunday depending on how the schedule is arranged. It will cost $10 per person to play, with format to be determined based on interest and staff (I'd tentatively prefer doubles, so sign up in that way and we'll adjust if needed). If other sites would like to run this (or if you have some other event around that time you would like to pair it with), let me know--the pricing will be the same.

Since I don't want to coordinate a doc/spreadsheet, if you would like to contribute questions, send me a list of 1-10 answerlines that you are interested in writing. I reserve, of course, all rights to veto/edit questions.

Is there any updates on the status of this? This was something I was looking forward to popping up on the calendar sometime in the academic year, but I haven't seen an update for ~5 months or so now. Do you need more people to contribute in order to finish up?

This tournament will appear sometime in the summer, either with CO or VCUO. There is no chance of it being done this semester and I don't want any outside help just because it's something I would like to do (mostly) by myself. I didn't get a chance to work on it in the fall and I knew this term was going to be brutal what with teaching and thesis credits, so it will have to wait until the summer, I'm afraid.

As long as it's still in the works I'm happy. I can wait as long as needs be for a well written movie tournament. Thanks for the update.

This will be finished by VCU Open, so hopefully it can find some time to be run that weekend.

You can also, uh, ignore that distribution--I don't even remember writing that (although it's not dramatically different--just very few common links, I think).

I want to play this, and if it happens at VCU Open, yay... That is all.

I'd like to take a shot at this if VCU Open happens in Michigan.

I updated the first post in this thread with more accurate information about what the tournament will be about and its details.

Short version: 13 packets to run tentatively as doubles sometime KABO weekend in Michigan. Ten bucks a player, let me know if you want to run it elsewhere. Sign up here or e-mail me, preferably with a partner in mind, but we'll adjust format if needed based on staff/interest.

I'm gonna try to put together a team for this. Are we looking for doubles or foursomes?

Also, are there any plans for a full TRASH tournament at KABO?

I would guess currently doubles, although format subject to change.

I have been in discussion with Tulane about potentially running Bayou a Drank if they can finish it by KABO weekend and a Sunday room/staff can be found. Nothing locked down yet. If any other trash ideas are out there (I know Eliza said she might write a different version of her tournament), I'd be interested in playing those.

I'll staff this if it's on Sunday, and play everything else on Sunday. Is the movie set entirely written?

I would rather play foursomes, but if popular consensus is doubles, then I'll probably bring two pairs.

On that note, I would probably field a foursome if Bayou a Drank is run that same weekend. Keep us updated! Thanks!

Unless we happen to finish very early on Saturday the 4th, this looks like it will be run the Sunday, August 5th, at Mason Hall either before or after the slapdash Bayou a Drank trash mirror. Format to be decided based on interest.

I did not write down the exact standings, but I know at our site Sam Bailey won and Matt Lafer took second. We ran this using the two-room shootout format that tech used, so full stats are sort of piecemeal. Other people who had high numbers of points included but are not limited to Steve Traicoff, Steve Oppenheim, Rob Carson, and Matt Hayes.

I hope people enjoyed the set. There's a Waterloo mirror up so hold off on specific comments perhaps until then, but any general comments here or specific comments privately would be good.

I enjoyed this tremendously and thought it one of the most fun side tournaments I've played in my time in quizbowl. I hope you do this again sometime in the future.

Final standings for the upper room at Ann Arbor:

1. Sam Bailey 690
2. Matt Lafer 645
3T. Rob Carson 180
3T. Steve Oppenheim 180
5. Steve Traicoff 150
6. Matt Hayes 145
7. Drew Scheeler 100
8. Alex Gerten 80
9. Trevor Davis 75
10. Connor Teevens 40
11. Andrew Hart 35

Rob Carson should have the detailed 15/10 breakdowns. Thanks for a very good tournament. Would have preferred more non-American and experimental film but the distribution was not exactly unexpected.

Edit: Stat correction for Andrew.

This was a very fun tournament. The movies that I've seen had great early clues that rewarded my watching them, and the majority of the other tossups were gettable to most of the field. I haven't seen many old films and I don't really care about who directed what when it comes to new films, so there were wide swaths that I didn't stand much of a chance on, but the tournament was still well worth playing for me. In the lower room, it was fun to get tossups on the later middle clues, and in the top room, it was exciting to see how much Sam, Matt, and everyone else knew.

Is there a chance of this set getting mirrored at any upcoming fall/early winter tournaments?

I do not wish to do so officially, but if anyone wants the set to run on their own, just ask for it. I plan on posting it after all August mirrors are done.

Is there any chance of this being posted on Wastebin soon? Or are there other mirrors being run of it in the coming week? If not, is there any chance it could be emailed to me?

After Valencia runs it, I think that's it, so it will be posted then.

About ten of us played this while sitting around eating wings and (for half of us) drinking beers after the Valencia KABO mirror. Obviously no scores were kept, but there were a lot of powers happening, and I absolutely loved the questions. Thanks to Mike for writing and sharing them.

Oh, sorry. I think we're actually going to mirror it on 9/16 so I'm going to wait until then to post it.
