by jdd2007
On Saturday, November 6th, 2010, the Ohio State University Academic Team will be hosting the "Great Lakes" site of the 2010 ACF Fall tournament. We only have 12 game rooms, so registration will be capped at 24 unless/until we decide on a specific format which employs byes.

This tournament is packet submission for any team that has a player who played collegiate quizbowl before September 1, 2009. Packets should be submitted to ACF Fall head editor Evan Adams [email protected].

This tournament will happen in Columbus on Ohio State's beautiful main campus. Teams should try to arrive around 8:30 a.m. so that the tournament can begin promptly at 9:00. The tournament will be held in the Central Classroom Building. Specific room information will be announced soon.

Base Fee: $120
Buzzer systems: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each***
Laptops: -$5 each, max 1 per team***
Travel: -$10 for traveling over 200 miles one way, -$20 for over 400, etc.
International: -$20
New to ACF teams: -$25
New to Quizbowl teams: -$75
High School teams: -$50
Minimum Fee: $0

Additionally, there will be discounts and penalties based on one's packet submission:

Sept 26, 2010: -$25 (-$50 for teams not required to submit packets)
Oct 10, 2010: No penalty (-$25 for teams not required to submit packets)
Oct 17, 2010: +$25
Oct 24, 2010: +$50
After Oct. 24, 2010: The editors may grant one or more 24-hour extensions at an additional penalty of $10 per day.

***We have plentiful house staffers with their own laptops, so these discounts will only be offered if we need extra staffers.

To register for this tournament, contact Madellyn Kennedy at [email protected] with your expected number of teams and buzzers. ACF Fall is traditionally one of the most attended events in college quizbowl, and I expect our mirror not to be an exception. Register early, register often and I look forward to seeing everyone on November 6th.

For this tournament, we set up a facebook event which you can join: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=1 ... 384&ref=ts

We can also bring 3 buzzers. Our fourth buzzer is kind of broken.

Bump to point out that we are rapidly filling our field and that teams should indicate how many buzzers they can bring.

Hey, I already talked to Kirun about this, but I wanted to post and make it official: NU will have 1-3 teams. I'll confirm the number next week. We don't have any operational buzzers.

duPont Manual High is going to be there (most probably, everything seems to be going in our favor so far). Most likely with one team, but maybe more...

Ok, as of now there are two spots open on a first come first serve basis. Everyone already signed up needs to finalize the number of teams they are bringing.

Just to double check: is Chicago signed up to bring three teams, or four? The numbers are different in each post, but four is the number we would like to bring.

Tuttle Park Place Garage is the closest to Central Classrooms. The Ohio Union South Garage and Neil Ave. Garage are also relatively close. Parking at any of these garages will be $5.

I am not sure if the clearance will be enough for our 12 passenger vans. Are there other places available on the road that are close?

So, just looking at what's on this thread, people should totally bring buzzers to this. Please.

I'm not quite sure where our buzzer system is, but I'll try to find it and bring it to this.

Unless someone wants to rendezvous with me somewhere in Columbus insanely early in the morning, the Case team will unfortunately only be bringing two buzzer systems.

Do we know what the format for the tournament will be like? For instance, how many games is each team guaranteed to play?

Final Details:
Unfortunately, there's no lecture hall in the Central Classroom building, so the morning meeting will be held in Independence Hall 100, which is at the southwest corner of Neil and 17th. Map is here

Matches will take place in the aforementioned Central Classroom building, here.
We'll try to start promptly at 9 AM.
Someone asked about format: there are fifteen packets, and teams will play more than ten games. The specific number depends on the number of teams that show up; currently I think it's twenty-six, including house teams. We'll let you know the morning of.

Max has already mentioned this, but for the sake of having everything in one place, parking is available at the Tuttle Park Garage here, at the Ohio Union here, and, if you have a large van, at the parking lots out by the Stadium, here.

If you have any questions, call me, Kirun Sankaran, at 205-910-7729 or Jacob Durst at 513-293-9043

Michigan A beats Michigan B in the second match of an advantaged final in which Michigan A had the advantage, 380-310.

More results hopefully later.

This tournament started and ended later than we intended--an hour (or more) is way too long for teams to wait in their rooms before the first match. However, once we got going, things sped up and we got through 15 or 16 rounds before 9 pm.

Stats are complete and will be posted online this evening.

Just want to say thanks and good job to the OSU team for running this tournament. There were a few problems (some of which you couldn't control), but you guys dealt with them pretty well.

The tournament itself, once it got started, was fine enough. Y'all had competent readers and things were moving fairly quickly. However, it was annoying that we had to wait for every room to finish before the next packet would get sent out. Additionally, the tournament starting an hour late was, admittedly, annoying given NU planned on driving back that night.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something obvious, but out of curiosity, when was the last time a non-nationals/post-nationals college tournament had more than 26 teams?

I wasn't able to be here for this, but by all accounts OSU pulled together a great effort considering the field size and other constraints. Awesome job, y'all.
