So far we have seven teams signed up. Three from RB, two from Edison, and two from an Arizona school.

Update: Rocket Surgery I is now PACE-affiliated, and the top two teams will qualify for NSC. We'll also be pursuing a gold-level certification.

Any thoughts?
Having not seen the IS-92 packets, I have no idea if his concerns are founded. I just think he is expressing the same concerns we have about any question packet: distribution, depth, difficulty. Yes, there have been times with NAQT that I've been frustrated with certain questions, but there haven't been so many problems that whole matches and tournaments were affected, and I have felt the same frustration at other tournaments with other packets too. I think we can all agree that no packet is perfect, and we feel that NAQT is at the very least passable and at the very most a good question set.

And as to the rest of his complaints about the tournament, we're going to do our best to run a tournament that we would enjoy playing at. There won't be blurt rules or death glares if you confer during the reading of a bonus, and we will do all we can to address each protest. All the readers and moderators will have been active in quiz bowl for some time, so we will all know how to make sure that players aren't punished for the ridiculous little things that seemed to have happened at this Illinois tournament.

Yeah. Obviously, as a Southern California team that competes regularly in the good quizbowl tournaments around here, we've never even had any experience with the blurt rule at a legitimate (viz., not Academic League) tournament, and we're certainly not going to champion it or any of the other vestiges of bad quizbowl about which people have complaints. We're working to make sure our tournament is run as smoothly and as fairly as possible.

What is the blurt rule? I've come across quite a few mentions of it, but I've never come across a definition.

The blurt rule discussed there is that if you buzz in but give your answer before the moderator recognizes you by name, you receive 5 points instead of 10 (if you were correct). Hilariously, this is an improvement over the previous rule, which was that "blurted" answers were simply treated as wrong.

Some strange vestige of Illinois quizbowl that came up because one of the first tournaments to use IS-92 used a strange mixture of standard NAQT and Illinois quizbowl rules.

As previously noted, it will not be used at this tournament.

Same with Science Bowl. Blurt rule screwed me out of tryouts a few years ago.

The worst thing SoCalHSQB has seen in a tournament (in the past 4 years) is single elimination for state champs, where final rankings mattered. There's no reason to think that La Jolla will run anything other than a good tournament under good quiz bowl standards (except for the NAQT distribution thing, but thats not their fault)

OK, Arcadia is now at 3 teams. The rest of the field has so far stayed the same.

After noon on Saturday, LJHS reserves the right to not allow any additional teams to sign up. Email me or post on this discussion board before noon on Saturday to be absolutely sure that your teams will be in. Any registrations made after that point will be considered but not necessarily honored.

Is there a moderator discount?

***EDIT to avoid repost*** RB's delegation will probably decrease to two teams. I should have a firm number by midweek.

Please let us know by early Thursday afternoon because we want to send out final info Thursday night. Also, if RB drops down to two teams, we will not need a moderator from your school.

We are now definitely down to two teams. Also, I just got a few emails to the effect of "Hey, it turns out I might not be able to get out of this other commitment Saturday. I should know by Wednesday whether I can go," so this might actually decrease to one team (although this isn't likely). A firm number should be available by Wednesday night.

At quick glance, our statline against University A makes no sense. (5/7/10)

EDIT: I think Howon had 0 negs that game, not 9.

Can you put the stats into the playoff brackets? Arcadia A did (slightly) better than 11th place.

Also, if you repost stats, could you add round report? Thanks.

Round report is up now. I'm working to correct any mistakes and to correctly split the rounds into their brackets and divisions; those final split stats will be up in a day or two.

Edit: okay, stats with afternoon brackets are now up.
