Neat. Can't say i disagree much with what ended up being the top 25. The two that are in this top 25 that weren't on my list were Whitman and MLK. And those were literally the two schools that i wanted to put in there. But from what i know about Whitman and what i've read about MLK, i just couldn't justify a ranking considering what they had lost or comparing them against teams right around that 21-25 spot. I put Chattahoochee and Walton on my list... i feel like those southeast teams (well, some of them) really get neglected so i put them up there assuming that both schools will have great years again because, well, they kinda always do, but just don't get the recognition because you see them losing to Hoover or Dorman and that's about it.

Looking forward to a good discussion though.

Will Hunter really be something like fourth? Lily, York, and the former B team are all certainly talented, but I've heard that they still have a lot of work to do to bring the team back to the level where it was before Guy left, and then to get better than that.

I have to agree with Andrew on Whitman, although I think we will improve quite a bit over the course of the year. Maybe people are overestimating Daniel's shadow.

Mmhm, you will improve. Let's just say that Trey thinks a CR/Whitman match will be a hell of a game this year (i agree). Don't know who will win, but for the moment i'll give you guys the edge based on past experience.

Oh, and i was kinda hoping for one CR vote in this (but it's probably justified not to get one, at the moment), but oh well. At least we have no where to go but up now! Not having our full lineup for at least the first two tournaments we go to isn't going to help things very much, though.

No real shockers, but I was a little surprised to see GDS at #6. Matt's awesome, but I'm not sure who they really return to fill Ian's spot. Their B team struggled at the NSC. I had them at #10, personally.

I think Hunter's ranking is perfectly justified. In a year that will see a lot of team's coping with the loss of Superstars, I think Hunter's got enough talent to be a top-tier team. York and Lily are both very good players, and should only get even better seeing that they're so young. I had them at #4.

I don't disagree with you there, but I was surprised that people think that they can clinch a #4 spot the season immediately after they lose Guy. I'd probably give them one year before they crack into the top 5, but I know that they have the capability to do so.

After having played the Hunter kids a lot at weekend of quizbowl (especially the singles tournament) and at NSC, I can assure everyone that their ranking is justified. I had hoped to see TJ rated a little higher, but hey, this is just a preseason poll and I'm not going to complain. It'll be interesting to see how the year plays out though.

I am somewhat surprised that DCD is ranked 10th. I would like to know why some people thought of this, as I thought we would be lower. Yeah, Dorman A this year deserves to be 3rd; I don't know anything about Hunter to make a comment. I would personally move up Georgetown 1 place, and I don't know much about Southside, Hoover, Mission San Jose to make comments on them.

and detroit country day probably deserves to be up there with the other big names. but thanks for the modesty neil. i think i was the one who gave you guys that #4 ranking; you guys--well, you especially--were very impressive when we played you at hsnct and i only figured you would be even better by now. on the other hand, i didn't really feel like you guys were #4, but i also didn't know enough about some of the teams who were ranked above you overall to put them before DCD. on that note, when people see my ballot they might have a lot of objections, and i'll just say right now that that's because i was just going off of stats i've been seeing online, never having played or seen play most of the teams i had on my list.

I'm incredibly happy to see that our B team beat out both Dorman and Maggie Walker's B teams in the almost section. I'm equally unhappy to inform you that this is totally and unequivocally wrong, as of now.

I considered Walton, but when we played them at NSC, just about all of their points were scored by Gazi, and I can't see them being close to the the same level without him. Hunter is unquestionably going to kick ass this year, though at the beginning of the year, anyway, I think Dorman will be better; I ranked GDS above Hunter, that was a mistake. As for DCD, Neil, I ranked you guys higher than tenth. You were easily one of the most dangerous players we faced at HSNCT, and I have great confidence in your ability to rock NSC and HSAPQ as well. I also tend to rank teams I've played higher than teams I haven't, but there you go.

I take little value in preseason polls.
As far as returning talent goes, Detroit Catholic Central is not the best team in their own town(Novi), but they are somehow ranked in the top 25. I can guarantee you they'll be in contention to win every tournament they enter, and a force to be reckoned with at both nationals, but no way can you justify a top 25 on prestige only (its exactly like ranking Notre Dame in the top 25, just because they're Notre Dame)

You're absolutely correct that DCC is overrated, except for the following ways:

1) DCC returns their entire B team, which did pretty well at HSNCT.
1a) Said B team outperformed Novi A at same event.
1b) I'm not sure that Novi returns their entire A team from HSNCT.
2) DCC has a history of producing top-10 level teams, and with a strong finish by returning players under their belt, there's a pretty clear indication that they have the capability that they will do well. It's no guarantee, of course, but it's not like people are just saying "I know the name DCC, here let me vote for them"
3) Notre Dame has had recruiting classes in the top 7 the past four years, according to Phil Steele. The only other teams that can make this claim are Florida and USC. Due to this and Notre Dame's relatively not difficult schedule, it was fair to put them in the top 25.
4) I assume DCC does not recruit players for the purpose of playing quiz bowl, despite their being a private school, but even if they did, they're actually successful at winning with recruited talent.
5) You made a sports analogy.
5a) An incorrect sports analogy.
6) DCC is, probably, not overrated.

I don't doubt that Novi is a talented team, but to proclaim that unquestionably better than DCC without providing any evidence is questionable.

Yeah, I think DCC is still the best team in their town. Unless Novi does the same amount of work that DCC does every summer, then I think that DCC will be ahead of Novi.

I in fact think that DCC might be the best team in the state of Michigan because of their history/ability to win; however, if we were to judge it based on National stats, they wouldn't be the best team in the state, but they work hard.

Also, "not being best team in area/state" and "being top-25 at nationals" are hardly mutually exclusive, as a quick survey of the mid-atlantic will show.

Well, first of all, I just chose it because it was the first example that came to mind(probably because it's where I'm most familar with). Also, there does seem to be more and more parity between the top mid-atlantic teams and the top teams from other areas. That said, here are a few thoughts:
1. As I discussed in the "Why is Illiniois bad", there are various geographic and political factors confounding the establishment of a regional quizbowl authority and a lot of people with the ability to put serious effort into quizbowl.
2. Lots of good tournaments, although this is kind of begging the question.
3. To a certain extent, it's self-reinforcing. If you play against a lot of top teams it sharpens your play and gives you high standards(compared to what you're playing against if, say, you'e the best team in a mediocre leauge)

Oh, I definitely know the power of mid-atlantic region, but I'm just wondering how it evolved to the point where it is right now. I guess it's partially because they have great school there, but there are great school everywhere... even in the South! Is quizbowl just more established there or what?

Great schools that are very close to each other that caught onto good quizbowl faster than the rest of the nation.

If that's the case, then only 2/Top 10 and 6/Top 25 teams are from the mid-Atlantic. That is certainly more than any other region, but you can't really call them dominating...er powerful.

Yeah, it's kind of cooling down a little. Still, the Mid-Atlantic traditionally raises good teams even when they're not great.

I noticed a wide fluctuation in LASAs ratings, from 3 down to much lower. I don't know that much about them... can someone fill me in?

They placed 11th at the HSNCT, apparently with a pretty young team that's returning everyone.

And now I know who voted for us (although when I saw that Jarret sent a ballot I kinda expected that he had voted for us). Maybe we can play well enough to still get votes through the year. Who knows?

Well, seeing how things went last Saturday, I don't think he's going to be making that mistake again.

We played LASA in a practice round Thursday before Nationals- they had some Lit holes, but were strong pretty much everywhere else. If they're completely reloading, they're a legitimate possibility for a top 10 finish...
