Robinson (NC) Invitational - February 4
Robinson (NC) Invitational - February 4
Robinson High School in Concord, North Carolina (just north of Charlotte) will host the First Annual Robinson Invitational on Saturday, February 4. It is open to any team from any state that wishes to attend.
The tournament will operate with a standard tossup/bonus format with two eight-minute halves. Prior to head-to-head rounds beginning, each team will go into isolation and hear the same fifty tossups and bonuses - the point totals from this round will be used to place the teams into pools. How many teams make the playoffs will depend on how many teams register.
Registration fee is $65 for the first team and $45 per additional team if you register before January 25. From January 26 on, the registration fee increases to $70 and $50. If your payment is received in the mail prior to January 27, we will discount $10. There is also a $10 discount if you agree to bring buzzers.
Other information...
-- Moderators will be Robinson faculty members; Robinson Quiz Bowl members will serve as scorekeepers
-- all questions are written in-house. A sample tossup packet can be found on our website (link below my signature). All official rules will be posted on the website shortly.
We look forward to seeing you here in February. Any questions, please e-mail me.

So essentially the Hi-IQ Bowl for all high-schoolers? North Carolina seems to delight in QB formats that don't pit teams off against one another, but I enjoyed Hi-IQ when I did it my senior year and I'm all for at least some diversity in tournament setups.
Let me know if there's anything UNC can help with.

We've already heard from a number of schools for this event. So far we have at least tentative commitments from the following:
Cannon School
East Lincoln
First Assembly (Concord)
North Lincoln
Northwest Cabarrus
Providence Day
Raleigh Charter (MAYBE)
Richmond Senior (x2)
Sun Valley (x2)
As far as the format... I'm not familiar with High IQ Bowl up in Greensboro..... there will be lots of head-to-head competition at our event. We're looking for a way to place teams into pools that's somewhat democratic and not just totally random.

Yeah, that definitely looks like the High IQ Bowl format to me, and if I had not seen what was said earlier, I would have taken this to me something of a High IQ Bowl warmup.
By the way, High IQ Bowl is Saturday, February 18 this year; email her at [email protected]. They have updated their website; entry deadline is December 16 (but only nonresidential North Carolina and Virginia schools with seniors can participate).
More North Carolina event dates are available at http://www4.ncsu.edu/~paking/ncata/schedule.htm and at the NCATA website.

Edit--New rules allow Virginia participation

Here's an updated field for the tournamnet on 2/4:
Cannon School
Central Cabarrus
East Lincoln
First Assembly (Concord)
Fort Mill (x2)
North Lincoln
Northwest Cabarrus
Providence Day
Raleigh Charter
Richmond Senior (x2)
Sun Valley (x2)
We'll accept teams until Wednesday, Feb. 1. The format we've tentatively decided upon is ideal for 24 teams, but we'll find a way to make it work for all teams that wish to attend.
And hopefully this won't be an issue, but our make-up date in the event of bad weather is Saturday, March 4.

Two sophomores, one freshman, and a junior who's only been with us for about 2 months. Raleigh Charter of the future. Something like 75% of our players were at the Science Olympiad regionals Saturday. I really felt it was important to send a team out west since so many teams from that way come to the Triangle for tournaments.

They did very, very well. All the moderators loved RCHS's team.rchschem wrote:Two sophomores, one freshman, and a junior who's only been with us for about 2 months. Raleigh Charter of the future. Thanks for sending a team down our way - I hope your kids enjoyed it.
