The Academic Team at the University of South Carolina is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the 2017 South Carolina NAQT State Championship tournament on Saturday, March 18. I, Eric Douglass, will be the tournament director. Further details are below. I will be in contact with all teams prior to the tournament and am happy to answer any and all questions regarding this event.

We will be using the IS-166 set. The IS-166 set will overlap with the set used at the collegiate Sectional tournaments so please let us know if you have any conflicts with that.

Location:

The tournament will be held in the Darla Moore School of Business, which is located on this map.

Teams will convene in room 134. Teams should begin arriving as close to 8 AM as possible due to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament (more on that below). Registration will go from 8:00 to 8:45, we will have an introductory meeting at 8:45 in room 134, and play will begin at 9 AM.

Parking-wise, the University of South Carolina will be hosting the first round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament on the 18th, and the Darla Moore School of Business is close to the Colonial Life Arena. Therefore, I highly recommend getting to USC as soon as possible (close to 8:00 AM) in order to get parking. There are a large number of metered parking spaces an easy walk from the building. This is especially true for Main Street, Assembly Street in front of the Koger Center for the Arts and the USC School of Music, and Park Street behind the School of Public Health and School of Music. Another good place to park are the meters on Devine Street between the School of Law and Courtyard by Marriott, which are head-in spaces. The following map shows this: The person icon is the Darla Moore School of Business (tournament site). The green line shows places where you can get parallel parking and the purple line shows head-in parking on Devine Street. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... 99997&z=17

The question mark on the above map is Lot A next to Colonial Life Arena. I am talking with the USC parking authorities regarding whether we can park in Lot A; I should know for sure tomorrow. In the meantime, plan to park in one of the street spaces. If that is a problem for anyone, please let me know.

Food:

We will be providing milk, juice, and doughnuts for breakfast. We will not be providing lunch. There are a number of eateries near the Darla Moore School of Business and we will provide a list of places to eat to the teams.

Anyone staffing the tournament can eat pizza with the rest of the staff or receive a lunch voucher.

Team size:

There can be a maximum number of 6 players on each team’s roster, with substitutions possible at half-time and between games. If you wish to bring 7 or 8 players, we ask that you register a second team, and so on for anyone with larger numbers of players.

Awards:

We will award trophies to the top 3 overall teams.

While we will not also have a separate JV division, we will designate the team that includes no players older than 10th grade as JV and will award a trophy to the top overall JV team.

We will recognize the top individual scorers with trophies and book prizes.

Fees:

$50 per team base fee
-$10 discount per buzzer system
-$20 per staffer (Reader/Scorekeeper)
-$10 multiple team discount
Minimum fee of $20/team

Registration:

Teams may register up until the day before the tournament or when the field fills up, whichever comes first. We are capping the field at 28 teams.

To register, please e-mail me, Eric Douglass, at [email protected]. Let me know:
1. The number of teams your school is registering,
2. The number of staffers you school is bringing,
3. The number of buzzer systems your team is bringing,
4. Whether your team is composed of only 9th and 10th graders (i.e. JV) and
5. A phone number for emergency contact.

I will send an email to you to confirm your registration and entry fee. We will accept payment by cash or check. We will not be able to accept payments via debit/credit cards. Checks should be made payable to "The Academic Team at USC". If you wish to pre-pay, contact me and I will send you my mailing address.

If you have any other questions you can reach me at [email protected].

Thank you and I look forward to seeing everyone on March 18th!

Just wanted to note that this event is a little over a week away and I've updated some of the information in the announcement. We still have plenty of room for new teams to register!

Congratulations to Dorman A, who won the 2017 South Carolina NAQT State Championship Tournament. Southside B finished 2nd and Dutch Fork A finished 3rd. Dorman C won the JV championship.

Full stats will be posted tomorrow. Thanks to all of the players, coaches, and staff. Special thanks to Ben Ingram, Dan Goff, Chase Fleming, Dr. Vitaly Rassalov, Lee Holden, and Geoffrey Thomas. Also, thanks to Cody Voight for some scheduling assistance. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves; we look forward to hosting more events at USC!
